If you change team name, you loose the titles?

The organization is credited with the championship they won in 79.  I think a city does not really own the trophy, the organization does.

no, as our good friend "Seems" pointed out in another thread...the franchise retains the titles as long as it is in operation.....which does bring up an interesting point...

the current Browns were an expansion team.....they did retain the team name and the colors from back in the city's glory years...but they have no history.....the Baltimore Ravens, who have one SB, also lay claim to the championships won years ago in Cleveland....but try explaining that to the older fans who still live in Cleveland and/or root for the Browns....interesting...

But then again I think since the team (lakers) is no longer in Minny, they should not be allowed to hang those 5 banners at the staples.

What if the Sonics return to exsistance in Seattle?

If the LEAGUE created a new franchise it would be year one for the new Seattle franchise ,with no past history.  If however,an existing franchise moved to Seattle, then Seattle would continue the franchise history of the team that just moved to Seattle.

    Duke
Here's a more detailed answer to your question regarding the 'Browns'.

In 1995, Art Modell, who had purchased the Browns in 1961, announced he was relocating the team to Baltimore, Maryland. The outrage and controversy[3] that erupted, as well as the NFL's desire to keep a team in Cleveland, led to an agreement whereby Modell was cleared to move his team but relinquished ownership of the Browns' name, colors, logos and history. That paved the way for the formation of a reconstituted team that resumed play in 1999 after three years of suspended operations

Actually Duke the Browns were operations suspended for those years. The franchise stop operating while what was the franchise operated as a new one.

All that really matters is the NBA says the five titles won in Min. belong to the Lakers
