    Shaq's mom: Shaq could return!

On his weekly radio show in Boston last week, Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge said the possibility of former LSU center Shaquille O’Neal retiring this offseason is strong. But O’Neal’s mother, Lucille, said he still could return next seasonNew Orleans Times-Picayune

Ainge should take Shaq back with some stipulations.

1-Come to camp at XXX weight

If he can't make it through training camp then release him. He's worth another year if he can drop the weight. He was doing fine when he was healthy.

Really hope that Shaq retires.  Just don't see him being able to contribute much this season, unless he would sit out for the beginning of the season and only play during the end of the season and during the playoffs.

I think that would be the only viable option. Have him get/stay in shape and start playing him 10 games before the playoffs start. Assuming we make the playoffs, haha.

Re: Shaq's mom: Shaq could return!

I can't see us wasting a roster spot on someone who cannot stay on the court.  Shaq is a huge man and next year will be closing in on age 40.  His body is not a body that will allow him to be effective on an NBA court.  There is no way he will be able to contribute for the Celtics.

It's not even reasonable to ask or expect Shaq to drop his weight to XXX pounds and work with Tim Grover (for example) to get his body conditioned and in the type of shape to play basketball.  He just is not that committed at this stage in his career!

However, he will continue to do things like be a guest conductor of the Boston Pops, be a statue in Harvard Square (or whereever he was) or place some focus on becoming a law enforcement officer somewhere in the Boston area.  You can bet he'll continue doing those things.  Focusing on those things will not get us banner #18.

As a side note, how does a microphone or notepad find its way to Shaq's mother to provide input on his retirement plans?

Do we have a choice?  Doesn't shaq have the option.  I kind of thought he was  a better character guy than to draw a paycheck just because he can, but we'll see.  Wouldn't it be funny if Sheed took the high road and Shaq takes the low road?

How about an offseason gastric bypass as a stipulation.  He could drop a quick 80 lbs that was. LOL

Just a thought, but is we have a lockout that say, knocks out half the season, wouldn't having Shaq back be a good thing? I mean only in a shortend season could I see this being a good thing, for the whole squad really, I mean our core really tends to  wear down as the year goes on.

Not just weight, but also strength and fitness reqs

An in-shape Shaq could play two or three more years

The problem is that he refuses to get in shape

Definitely worth considering. Shaq is like no other NBA center and could make a difference in postseason games. He's also a terrific community ambassador and always very gracious to Boston fans, especially kids - nobody here dislikes nor blames him.and clearly his mom is the source of his personality. Also seems like he'd be willing to make financial concessions to strike a win-win arrangement.

Yep, thats why it wouldn't hurt to bring Shaq and Murf to camp. Camp doesn't hurt anything. You get to see how committed they are and if they aren't you just release them. It's a low risk high reward move.

Shaq should be a Sheed type of roster spot. Let him sit out most 1st half he only cost less than 2 mill next season. If we dont count on him and bring him off the bench is can only be a plus. When he was healthy were playing 700 ball it couldnt hurt.

Posted by susan250[/QUOTE]shaq should be healthy by preseason. u must play him. no back to backs, no minimal minutes. but if shaq can play he must start and play 15-18 minutes. if he can tdo that, y would u have confidence for the playoffs?
