    He should def start

None of his 16-20 mins should EVER come without KG next to him, they are perfect together, his style of play meanwhile does not mesh with either Baby or Jermaine O'Neal

Baby and O'Neal will be a great tandem, with KG playing alongside JON during crunch time

    Shaq should definetly start.

It will be good see the Celtics have a low post threat that was lacking last year. Perkins was good, but Shaq is a better scorer in the post.

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

Shaq still has more skill than Perk at this stage because he was one of the greatest players regardless of position, to ever play this game.

He can only display his advanced skills in limited minutes now.

Perk needs to take a back seat and learn as much as he can from the Diesel.

It is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

In two years he will be gone and Perks role on this team will be much larger than it has been already.

We all know that K.G. is a jump shooting big man that needs to be complemented by a low post scoring big man.

Shaq is without question our best low post scorer.

JON plays more in the low post than K.G. but also is a jump shooting big man.

    Perk
should play alongside him as a low post scorer to complement him off the bench as well.

Perk needs to continue to develop a reliable hook shot, up and under lay up,baseline spin move, and 12 foot jumper(baseline from both sides of the basket and in the paint).

A reliable baseline bank shot would'nt hurt, but I know I'm asking too much.

He can practice shooting jump shots while rehabbing the knee, I know hook shots and footwork moves are out of the question.

Perk has done a better job at not being so anxious in the low post when he gets the ball, but still needs more patience and discipline when posting up.

who have we had working with perk over the years? he seems to have hit a plateau in terms of his ability to play offense. he hands are far from soft and he needlessly puts the ball on the floor far too often. i've always thought mchale would be a great guy to work with bigs on their post moves. he was the master in his prime.

Perk is a defender. On offense he will always have physical limits.

Learning will have little to do with Shaq's abilities. Shaq's skills have more to do with Shaqs size advantage over everyone than anything else. His eye - hand coordination is also very good. Perk has poor hands and his coordination on offense is limited by NBA standards.

With that being said, I still prefer Perk over Shaq because of his defense.

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

I like Shaq off the bench in a set offense where they can pound the ball down low, while the 1st unit rests.

With Shaq in there the 2nd unit can be a destructive machine.

However he plays off the bench or starts,  it needs to be in short five minute runs.  He can be very effective in spurts and to use him longer is asking for trouble.  He keeps Garnett's minutes down and healthy for the end of the season.

He should start. jo can play both 4 and 5 so he gives them more flexibility off the bench.

I think he should start, just for the fact of having the biggest guy on the team on the floor at the start of the game for intimidation purposes.

He should start.... because if he doesn't, he's going to go all shaq-fu mode... when has Shaquille O'Neal ever not started before?  Cleveland would have been better off against Boston had they just benched him but good luck benching The Big Leprechaun.

sadly, this is right on.  imagine perkins a step slower dragging the legs around for moving screens.  and his overall mobility was "just a li'l quicker than cumbersome" without the blown out knee, so he's going to be slower than that now coming off the injury.

methinks perk is done / 3rd string material now.  unless he has some sort of miraculous come back and the chances of that are low.  vitaly potato was a statue after his knee buckled, among legions of other 5's through the years.  not many large guys recover well after that type of injury/surgery.

Perk will never learn from SHAQ.
With his injury and deminishing skill (fast) he's done!

The Celtics wasted his value when his skill still at the top. At 24, there is no hope. His value is just so so.

Oneal and Oneal are solid combination. We have hope to win again.

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

Doc is going to be evaluating several combinations, including BBD with Shaq.  I agree KG looks to be a great partner.

As for Perk being done.  That's silly.   The type of surgery he had affects athletes who rely on speed and quickness more, but in many cases that evntually returns. It took TA a couple years, but he's back.  Perk is a power player.  As Brady explaned his reconstructed knee is actually stronger than his other knee.  Perk will never be an offensive gem, but his power game should be there.

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

Shaq should start and JO should be the bench guy.  Hopefully Erden can get a few minutes here and there too, since the objective is to get to the playoffs and not necessarily win every regular season game.  Doc should expand his bench if for the sole purpose he can see if he can rely on younger guys when it matters.

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

I think shaq should start...mb the first 5 minutes or so of each quarter....youll have shaq paired with KG, and being out there with the starters and our best defenders will hide his defensive deficiencies that would be evident playing off the bench..

I see Shaq as similar player to BBD, and JO similar to KG, so having JO/BBD and KG/Shaq tandems would be ideal IMO

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

    Good thread.

As of right now, I'd say have Shaq start.  This is because:

    1) The C's can jump on opponents early.  The C's defense will be stronger with Shaq on the floor simply because he is a bigger force in the middle than JON.

    2) Combinations on the floor:  KG and Shaq compliment each other's game perfectly.  Rondo has a low post option and an option from 12-16 ft. out with this combination.  BBD and JON can play a similar scheme as well since JON is a jump shooting C and BBD likes to bang on the boards.

    3) Even distribution of offense:  With JON coming off the bench, the C's will have just as many offensive threats as they do with the starters.  With Nate, JON, Ray, BBD, and Quis on the floor the C's shouldn't be stagnant in terms of offense.  However, if you bring Shaq off the bench instead of JON it would cause problems creating offense because BBD and Shaq are too slow as a combo to create solid plays on offense.

    4) No off-the-court drama: Starting Shaq makes for a happy Diesel.  No drama.

Agree with all but #4, great post

As for the drama part, it is far more likely that JON was told he would start, and signed on for almost 6 million, over Shaq who took the vet min

Re: Should Shaq Start Or Come Off The Bench?

18 for starting, 13 forcoming of the bench -- the race narrows.

I think it should be closer.

How about this, Sometimes Shaq should start and sometimes he should come off the bench.

    Now that makes sense.
