That 3rd Draft Pick Danny Never Got?

    "The Kevin Durant of Brazil"

... in summer league, Caboclo (6'9" F) opened some eyes. While averaging 11.4 points and 3.0 rebounds over five games, he wasn't great, but he was tantalizing. His arms stretch forever. His shooting range extends to the 3-point arc. He needs a lot of work in a lot of areas, but especially for an 18-year old, he shows a solid feel for the game. Caboclo delivered a similar first impression to that of Giannis Antetokounmpo: This guy's not ready yet, but if he ever comes close to maximizing his talent, he could be special.

When a team can find that much potential with the 20th pick, it's nice value. Yet because of Caboclo's status as a relative unknown, the masses wondered why the Raptors didn't just wait until their second pick at No. 37.

Apparently, general manager Masai Ujiri didn't want to risk another team choosing the Brazilian first. Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix reported Friday that the Dallas Mavericks held interest with the 34th pick and the Boston Celtics were also "fascinated" by Caboclo.

The Celtics would have needed to acquire another pick to choose him. But they have aggressively made draft-day trades in the past, and they repeatedly said they were open to adding another pick this year if the right situation came along. If the Raptors hadn't selected Caboclo so early, maybe Danny Ainge would have swooped in to take him with an early second-round pick. Or maybe not.

    The key word is "maybe".

Maybe Danny would have swooped in to take him?

Just like maybe Danny would pick Vonleh over Smart.

    The "maybes" don't count.

It's not a case of "maybees."

It's just interesting to find out who Danny was interested in when he talked about acquiring a second round pick.

Danny is interested in a lot of players.

I just don't think it's worth discussing because there is no definite answer.

We can never know for sure if Ainge was really interested in that KD of Brazil.

Everybody here expected Ainge would trade for another 2nd round pick.

Just like last season when he bought a pick to draft Colton Iverson.

This year Ainge did something Danny Ainge usually don't do and that's not picking in the 2nd round.

Seem like all those internet geniuses should trust Danny. Insurance for Rondo, trade bait, free agent draw. Not bad for one pick. "SMART" pick

The Lakers got the steal of the 2nd round, the guy I was hoping Ainge would get: Jordan Clarkson of Missuri

Apparently this Brazillian player was on the NBA Radar of quite a few teams.....

The Knicks also got Glen Robinson III in the 2nd didn't they ?
