The 4 spot

This is the biggest hole that needs to be filled for the Celtics right now. BB's +/- numbers are terrible, Sully is too green to make any impact and we're not getting the rebounds. I wouldn't be surprised if Doc's defensive schemes hinge more on that role, implicating the rest of the team.

Need help there, and quickly.

Stop the easy penetration by opposing guards and Bass's defensive weaknesses wont be so easily exploited.. bring in players that can play defense too... If we're a defensive team, thats our mantra...then why the heck we trade BBD for Bass, who is terrible defensively?
Sully should be starting and getting a minimum 30 minutes, for at least a 10 game period,to see just what he can do. I would also sign KMart for the remainder of the season. He at least would give us a physical player, which would be one more then we have now!!

While you are at it start Green as well? This team as currently constructed is going to lose a lot of games this year. Bradley and trades are the only hope.
Alright, starting line up!  Rondo, Pierce, Green, Sully and KG. What could it hurt, Green could guard the 2 and Pierce stay with the 3!!  Rondo is becoming more and more of a problem for me. If he were able to shoot and hit free throws that line up would look pretty impressive. But the truth is he can't, defenses know this and dare him to shoot!!

Re: The 4 spot

from 16-23 feet rondo is hitting on 54% of his shots. he's making 39% from the three point line. he's also attempting at least 40% more of these longer shots than in any season previous. overall he is shooting 51.4% from the floor, also the highest of his career. to say he isn't improving his long range shooting is ignoring the facts. unfortunately the ft shooting is around 60%, the same as it has been throughout his career. would be nice to see him at least get it to 70% from the line. rondo's turnovers are right in line with the top point guards in the league. his assist to turnover ration is outstanding.

neither jeff green nor paul pierce can cover all but the biggest of 2s so while the solution of starting green and pierce together is a nice one it's not really viable long term. maybe it has gotten to the "what difference does it make" point, but it also isn't going to work in the playoffs so either way we're in trouble.

the issue is really the lack of 1-2 viable, legitimate big men - particularly a starting center. you can roll with one undersized player in the rotation, maybe two, but the celtics are undersized all over the place. Sullinger and bass are undersized 4s. KG and Wilcox are undersized 5s. Jason Terry and AB are undersized 2s. the only place the celtics compete from a size perspective is at the 3 and at the two when courtney lee is in the game.

not really worried about the 2s because terry is a vet and ab makes up for lack of size with awesome athleticism so even if lee goes don't see that as a big issue, but the inclusion of a legit center into the mix is a must. also think another big body is needed in place of collins. then you have the option to play garnett and wilcox at the 4. sullinger and bass are just too similar and you really only need one of them in the rotation. if you added a couple of big guys bass could go in any trade. lee is replaced by the returning AB. green going in a trade would hurt because there is no legit back-up for pierce so one would hope any deal involving him would come with or be linked to a move for a back-up 3.

Re: The 4 spot

Actually, the Celtics already have one of the best power forwards to ever lace up sneakers.  What we really need is a legitimate center who can rotate on defense.  (Perehaps someone like, oh, I don't know, Marcin Gortat would work?)  The experiment with KG at the 5 and Brandon Bass and Paul Pierce making up the rest of the front court has failed.

Bass and Pierce and Terry should be coming off the bench.

Rondo
Bradley
Green
Garnett
Gortat

Get Hickson too if we can....can never have too many bigs.  Shooting guards and small forwards are a dime a dozen.  Can't coach size.
