    If the Celts used the Zone more agains the Lakers in the 2010 Finals, Banner 18 should already be hanging on the rafters of the Garden.

    Doc Rivers is an idiot. He thinks the zone is a "junk defense".

     

    NBA teams should do what NFL teams do. Switch defenses often during the game to mess up the opponents.

    There have been a number of great player coaches that played for the C's. Russ was one of many. The advantage is that a PC can change set plays on the fly to fit the situation quicker. Rondo sometimes got dialed into one game plan which just didn't work other times he did have some success. Doc, being a point guard tended to let his background allow too much of the PC stuff for sure. Does it mean he is a bad coach..I hardly think so. Switching defenses is a great way to keep the opposition off guard and to stymie their game plan. Timing is critical when changing back and forth and it takes players to do so on the fly not so much the coach putting in a switch signal to be really effective. This all takes practice and smart athletic players! The practice time is what we don't have...Maybe later this year at best. It should be fun to watch.

Boston actually owns the fourth-best man-to-man defense, allowing 0.846 points per play in half-court sets. But the Celtics are not afraid to throw the zone changeup and with good reason: Despite the fact that zone has accounted for a mere 145 possessions (2.7 percent of total plays), the Celtics have allowed only 0.786 points per play and opponents have shot 35.6 percent against it.

      I just pray that other teams don't start playing a zone on us.

    From a coaching standpoint, the NBA is different from the NCAA, or even the NFL. It is a player's league where stars make much more than coaches, and they are much harder to get and keep than coaches. The players know this, and sometimes take advantage of the situation. 

    It happened earlier this season with Rondo. While Doc insisted that the Celtics play the "right way", Rondo insisted on getting his steals and rebounds instread of playing solid defense. On offense Rondo waited until the clock ran down and fo passed to the individual that would give him the assists that he wants so badly.

    The play-offs are different. Players must win to be considered great. As a result, Rondo plays better team, half court offense and defense, so he will be missed in the play-offs.

    Doc deserves some credit. The Celtics are 11-4 since Rondo went down, and he is using a system that plays to the avantages of the players that he has now.  

    The zone has some advangers from time to time, especially when the other team is not expecting it. If they play it too often, other teams will adjust. Things are going well, enjoy the ride.
