    • No superstars.

    • No self drafted top-10 picks.

    • No one player with a PER above 18.8.

    • Opponent 3ptFG% .302 (1st)

    • Opponent 2ptFG% .438 (4th)

    • Defensive Rating 95.4 (2nd)

    • Beat the Kobe/Shaq Lakers in FIVE

    • Returned to the Finals the following year and lost to SA in seven games.

Since the Cs aren't getting big time FAs and are too stupid proud to tank, this points the only logical way to Bannerville. Of course, you have to have a GM that knows what he's doing and an owner who doesn't try to sell his fans a bill of goods.

If the only example of a championship team without a superstar is just the 2004 Pistons, that means for the last 10 years only one team won a championship without a superstar.

In other words, the odds are against you.

Karl Malone was 40. They still beat the Lakers with their TWO superstars in FIVE.

The following year, they to SA to SEVEN.

Ironically, the Spurs could fall into this category. Duncan no longer is a superstar and the Spurs must rely on role players (Leonard, Green, etc.) to carry a significant part of their offense. If they can't solve LeBron guarding Parker, the Spurs are in trouble. That said, they still have a good chance at winning this series.

Anyway, my point is that if you avoid bad contracts and draft well, you can build a champion.

Pierce was drafted #10 by the C's and as we all know he was on the 2007-08 team. Was anyone else drafted in the top 20 by the C's.

Bynum was drafted #10 by the Lakers.  I don't remember off-hand anyone else on that team drafted by the Lakers in the top 10.

Who was "self-drafted" by the Lakers for their fake 3-peat in the top 10?

Dirk was drafted #9 by the Mav's.  I don't remember any other top 10 picks "self-drafted".

You seem to have a problem with my term.

"Self-drafted" means that some of the Pistons players were high picks from other teams (Billups #6 by the Cs for example).

The Cs are too stupid to tank, and play in an undesirable locale for FAs.

Unless the Cs hope to get lucky once every 30 years, this is the only logical way to build.

    Good question.

    A number of reasons:

    • advanced analytics are still new to basketball
    • impatience
    • bad contract management
    • poor drafting

DA's drafting of Fab Melo and recent 2nd round wasted picks shows the he's not stat savvy.
