    Tom Heinsohn

Question regarding Tom Heinsohn. How did he beat Bill Russell for the rookie of the year award? The sportswriters at the time didn't like Russell? Or they figured that Heinsohn was more important to the Celtics success than Russell in 56/57?

Due to the Olympics, he only played in 48 games that year...14.7 PPG and 19.6 RPG wasn't too shabby, though!

Agree......Russ missed the first part of the season due to the Olympics....Tommy Gun was an immediate hit with his scoring....good topic kiddo.....I don't remember anyone ever asking that question here before....

Yeah, was wondering if there were any politics behind the decision. Surely Russell was more vital to the team winning the championship than Heinsohn. Even if Russell did only play half the season, he made the season what is was from what I can tell.

They prob did the voting before the playoffs, so you couldn't know for sure that Russ was going to be the missing piece to a title.

The Celtics had made the playoffs for several years in a row and it was the talents of Cousy, Sharman and a pretty decent rebounding defending Center in Ed McCauley that led them there. Those mid 50's teams were always a scoring forward short of going farther and thats what Tommie was. McCauley was part of the trade for Russell.

RUWorthy, simple and FACTUAL answer: Boston is a very racist town, as even Russell would attribute to.

    Koberulz,

Boston is not a racist town......Bill russell has said NOW BOSTON has changed....Russell said alot of his issue was with the media when he played.
LA is more racist than boston. In LA you have mexican and black gang wars...In Boston we dont have gang issue on that scale...

BOSTON NOW is not a racist town..If it was why would KG play here?..Why would doc rivers want to sign a contract extention....

Why does boston have a black governer...and why did mass and boston basically vote 86% for obama...

Boston voted more for obama than LA did...

    Those are the facts....

    Thanks for playing..

DoctorCO, why is it that thousands of white people chase 2 black men down the streets of Boston every year in what is known as the Boston marathon?  Sounds a lot like the days of slavery if you ask me. That kind of racism never happens in L.A., and I would not be so proud of voting for Obama. That just makes you look gullible, which I am pretty sure you are. Laughing

I don't make predictions... just factual and reality based personal hopes and desires... but if I predicted your age it would be 11, IQ 70 and so on down the line:D

Really, because your entire rant on Len Bias seemed pretty much like a very long winded prediction with nothing of substance to back any of it up. And seriously, how do you predict the life of a dead man? You could possibly be a fictional writer but nothing more. Thanks for playing!

    Re: Tom Heinsohn

DoctorCO, if you knew anything about gangs, then you would know that there are different races of people in the same gangs. Maybe you should come to L.A. and learn something.

Also, in all other marathons across the country, there is a mixture of races scaterred throughout the runners. In the Boston marathon, the same 2 or 3 Africans look like they are being chased by thousands of white people which is really no different than the plantation days. Thus proving my point that Boston is still as racist as it has always been. Bill Russell despised playing for your racist town, regardless of how you spin it.

Redley34, you must have gotten side tracked with your obsession of Kobe Bryant again, but the conversation was about how Boston's racism helped Heinsohn, and made Russell angry and bitter. Please stay on topic.

    Thanks!

Until you can claim to have lived in the U.S. anytime in the 50s or 60s, there is nothing you can say about racism back then that has any meaning whatsoever.
