In Response to Who will stop Lebron:
Maybe I am mistaken, but its known that the Heat's basic strategy is to give the ball to Lebron. So my question, who does Danny envision as the Lebron stopper? a) Pierce b) Lee c) Green d) Bass x) Rondo/Bradley/KG e) Double team I think that a-d are all better options than e since with their two pick-ups, they have cemented their perimeter kick-out threat. We can throw Lee/Bradley/Dooling against Wade/Allen to take them out of the game. But seems like our position last season was "go ahead Lebron, be a one man team" and he put up 50. Is it unreasonable to dedicate a man to him who can (attempt to) shut him down? I'd ideally think it'd be Green in attempts to keep Pierce fresh on offence, but many here seem to think that Green isn't a great defender. So, is Lee big enough to do it? We lost Pietrus who was alright at it... so who steps up? Bass?? There's always the X factor. Maybe Bradley/Rondo's speed can throw LJ off for a couple of plays a game. Maybe throw KG on him once or twice during his 5 minute shifts. I think our TEAM can beat the Heat's "team", but we saw that Lebron can take the game over, so we need a counteraction to take him out. J Collins to hack at him until he cries? Thoughts please

Well the rest of the league wil have this same problem he's the best player in the league and just not easy to stop.

The best defender we have against lebron is a healthy Paul Pierce. lebron destroyed Green in the playoffs two years ago (although maybe he can get better. on D. ) Lee gives up too much size and his defensive numbers drop (significantly) against small forwards. the man is a two guard and it's best to leave him there.

So basically it comes down to a hopefully healthy Paul Pierce limiting lebron, having KG shut down Bosh, while Bradley/Lee take Wade out of the game. From there it is up to Rondo and the bench to be the difference.

Alot has to go right for us to get by the heat.

    Bradley single-teams Wade

Pierce and Green stay fresh taking turns defending LeBron forcing jumpers while making LeBron work by moving without the ball on offense.

KG in the paint stops LeBron.

    R9R,
You don't stop LJ you just need to slow him down a bit and he'll choke himself.
Also, basketball is a team sport. As the last playoffs showed us Celtics were at least an equal, if not better, team to Heat, even with injured key players.

In Response to Re: Who will stop Lebron:
Do you see what I'm saying though? Seems like our strategy was to build stregth around Lebron and let him decide the fate of the game. With his newly minted Olympic gold & NBA Championship, isn't he even more of a threat? If the Heat are the team to beat, why isn't it Danny's #1 agenda to get a disruptive defensive force that can abandon offense and throw their energy and body entirely into stopping Lebron? If I were in the NBA as a 2nd or 3rd tier player, I would think this is how you go and differentiate yourself.  A Lebron James stopping specialist. (I know, perhaps a lot more difficult than I make it sound)

Whose out there? That's the problem. also Green has potential. Danny is banking on that.

Well, i agree except for KG in the paint to help. Bosh is the. Best shooter on the heat (other than Ray of course)  He pulls KG out to the perimeter.  That small bal lineup worked really well for them.

Do not like saying this cause im no fan of LBJ., but who could stop MJ. You have to shut everyone else down and let them stop themselves. PP would be in foul trouble  by the end of the first quarter. If they are going to beat you long range then so be it, but you got to shut down the paint the best you can.

If the league gets rid of the no rules for Lebron, then lots of players can contain him. He gets away with Shaq like dulldozing into the lane. Start calling the fouls more evenly, and many teams will contain him. The league favors Lebron and a few others.  If you so much as breathed on him last year(especially in the finials) a foul was called. Ridiculous. That is why it is near impossible to stop Lebron.

You can't stop Lebron because you just can't. However Danny did his best to acquire and build players who can match up against the Heat. For example if Bradley comes back whole he and Rondo will present matchup problems as well, and that's how you counter the Heat by creating your own set of mismatches.

You posted this because as a fake Celts fan and real Lakers fan you need this forum to be about the Lakers to feed your sickly game.

But the fact is once the shock of some over the Howard trade goes down this forum will return to a focus on the Heat, not the Lakers. That's not what you want. I see the Lakers losing to OKC, and if they do, then all your frenzied posts in here are going to seem like such a waste to you, as they already do now to us. I look forward to it greatly.

We have no one player who can guard LeBron!!  He destroyed Pierce the last 2 years in the play offs!!  If we could hold Wade under 20 we can beat them, because it will put too much preasure on LeBron to have to score or make a great play every time down the court!!  It's really simple, keep DWade under 20 and we win!!

No one. To beat miami u have to contain the OTHER players. Lebron is gonna get his, u cant stop him. Just dont let him go off, keep him in that 27-34 pt range. While trying to take away the heats 3 pt shooters. The problem is they just got the greatest 3 pt shooter of all time. So there goes that idea. Man its gonna suck watching ray hit dagger 3s against us.

    Re: Who will stop Lebron

Three things a team can do to limit LJ's effectiveness:

    1. Double team him (take the ball out of his hands)
    2. Make him work on defensive (match him up against your star player)
    3. Attempt to get him in foul trouble (drive the ball at him)

None of the 3-strategies above work anymore! He has gotten smarter and better as a player. Double team him he passes the ball to an open shooter. Make him work on defense, he wears your star player out first. Attempt to get him in foul trouble, well the referees are not much help here!

The best way to limit LJ's effectiveness is to make shots and limit turnovers. LJ gets allot of fast break points / dunks, off of defensive rebounds and steals.

Well, you said it all, you Celtic fans are in complete shock of the Howard trade and it is precisely why most of you keep calling it a bad trade, Bynum was better, da da da. Then you have the old nutter Duke who now concedes the Lakers will catch Boston in titles but downplays it's importance. It all comes from plain old shock that the Lakers keep pulling one off after another and the tradition continues. You all know, before Howard, Kobe and company are done, the Lakers will be the winningest franchise is history. At that point there will be no more reason for us trolls to come here and mock. Just a matter of time.

    NBA.com:

With a hat tip to Dwyane Wade's passing, James led the league in fast-break points per game (5.9).

you can't have it all, but you have to count on your defense being fundamentally sound enough to steer the ball away from the open camper in the corner or else rotate to them

the rest of your lineup is athletic enough to do it. LeBron's the only one you worry about posting up smaller people. Bosh isn't posting up. Maybe Wade a little... but not often.

and if they go small, the Celtics can do something similar except with high percentage two point shots on slashers/cutters and Garnett in the post

You don't need to stop LeBron to win.  You just have to win your matchup at the position.

With the combination of Pierce, Green, Bass and Sullinger the Celts have to win the productivity matchup at 3+4 (I am assuming that Bosh will play at 5).  You put enough pressure that LeBron is forced to play 44+ mins game after game.

At the same time, with the combination of Rondo, AB, Terry and Lee, the Celts have to win the productivity matchup at 1+2.  Again, put enough pressure that Wade is forced to play 44+ mins game after game.

Thats it.  And if somehow the Celts can get Josh Smith, it will be a dream scenario.
