[QUOTE]Donnn, you are either really dumb or really crazy.  I haven't refuted how poor BC sports are.  If you are confused by the word "haven't" it's "have" & "NOT" put together.  Both football and basketball are bad...right now.  Now, unlike you, I don't take this to mean they will be bad forever.  That's what I am refuting.  Bad now doesn't automatically mean bad forever.  Does that work for you?  Easy enough to understand?  If you'd like to discuss this point, I am all for it.  But first I need to be clear you understand it. You have sunk to making up things you think I said and then arguing them.  That's a sign of crazy man. I just hope you are on here when Calhoun eventually gets fired for being a dirtball and Unconn hoops fall to the level of all their other sports....crappy. Lastly, please try to make some sense.  Telling me that I am saying BC sports aren't bad right now (when I am not) makes you look like dummy.  Please try to do better

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: How does DeFlippo still have a job? : You have too many falsehoods and half-truths in one sentence for me to cover them all so I'll just take a few of them.  (1) The 'cheating' involved a lower-level guy sending too many text messages to a recruit that never even went to UConn something like 3-4 years ago (2) Kemba Walker did not say that he 'never even looked at a book while a Husky', he said that William Rhoden's book was the first he had read straight through.  This is not a good thing to say but most college courses have textbooks that most students skim to study (3) UConn did not 'try to sue BC', in fact UConn (via the governor and attorney general) joined Pitt, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia in suing Miami, BC, and the ACC -- that's right 2 of the 5 schools that sued already joined or are joining the ACC so your point about UConn doesn't make any sense.   Also, the Big Least?  Really?  After the ACC just had one of the worst bowl performances of any major conference in the history of college football?  Whose conference champion gave up 70 points to a very mediocre West Virginia team? After the conference has been completely dominated in basketball by just TWO teams for the past 15 years.  After the Big East had more teams in the NCAA basketball tournament than any other conference in history and won the championship?

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: How does DeFlippo still have a job? : Think your foot is dancing on chile peppers TexMex or your Tacos have caught up with you along with your daily diet of yellow rice and Goya products! BC will never live these jumping beans down:   Two Boston College players have been reinstated and three others were given additional suspensions by the NCAA for their parts in the biggest gambling scandal in college football history.        The school suspended 13 players for the final three games of the 1996 season after an investigation into gambling on the Eagles football team. One has since suffered a career-ending injury, four were allowed to complete their coursework and three had their scholarships revoked.        Of the remaining five, the school said, two players have had their eligibility reinstated, two are suspended for the first two games of the 1997 season and one will sit out the first four games.        The school did not identify which players received which punishment, and a spokesman declined further comment.       Football coach Dan Henning resigned at the end of the 1996 season, due mostly to his 16-19-1 record. Basketball coach Jim O'Brien also left the school after a falling out with the admissions office over the rejection of three recruits just days after the football scandal broke.       Last week, athletic director Chet Gladchuk left to take over the same position at Houston.        The 8,800-student school was at the center of a point-shaving scandal in 1982 when Rick Kuhn was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his role in fixing six basketball games during the 1978-79 season.        Initial reports pointed to a similar problem this time. Rumors of point-shaving first surfaced after the Oct. 26 Syracuse game, in which the Orangemen trailed 14-7 before rallying for 17 points in the final 1:43 of the first half. After a 20-13 loss to Pittsburgh several players were confronted by Henning and the team's student captains.       Thirteen players were eventually suspended by the school, the most players ever implicated in a gambling scandal. After a nine month investigation by Middlesex County District Attorney Tom Reilly, six men were indicted last week in connection with the gambling ring -- none of them current BC athletes.

Good effort cheerio but since 1996 most of what is reported about this scandal is exagerated or just plain wrong.
It was not point shaving, it was just a bunch of players betting football cards.
It was not even close to the biggest scandal, that honor belongs to the multi school scandal in the 50s
No one from BC was indicted or arrested.
It was such a chicken**** event that the NCAA took no action against BC. No penalties, no suspensions, nothing at all from the NCAA

And being a uconn fan you really shouldn't get in to debates like this. We only have to look at uconn over the past year to see that your coach was suspended for cheating, a football player was arrested for child porn, etc etc

Perhaps this comment deserves consideration. BC is blip in all things considered important in this miserable collegiate town. The Red Sox, PATS & Bruins own this town,  and BC is considered after birth. By losses to URI, etc. it will be quite awhile for BC to gain R E S P E C T  with the caliber of talent and coaches they admit to their failing athletic system.

After reading many posts over the last month, I think that Donnnn, postingking, Cheerios, and WHR are really the same person with multiple identities, but all spouting the same drivel. They're down on DeFillipo because he had the foresight to guide BC into the ACC, which is where their beloved Kings and Queens of the Nutmeg State now want to be. Sorry guys and girls. The Iditarod starts on March 3. Mush those Huskies.

ACC basketball essentially a two-team league

Very well-written and researched column in the Washington Post today by college basketball writer John Feinstein on ACC basketball since expansion.  For example, he documents that ACC basketball coaches were against expansion 9-0 but were ignored by everyone.  Further, he quotes former Maryland coach Gary Williams on how much damage expansion has done to ACC recruiting, basically saying that only Duke and North Carolina can successfully recruit nationally now.

Probably the most significant part of the column though is actually documenting how far the ACC has fallen in basketball.  In the 15 years prior to expansion, the ACC had four separate teams play in the Final Four and three other teams make it to the Elite Eight (i.e. nearly every ACC team had at least made an Elite Eight appearance during that time period).  Since expansion, only Duke and UNC has made the Final Four and no other team has ever made the Elite Eight.  In fact, other than Duke and UNC, there have only been 3 Sweet Sixteen appearances in total by any ACC teams since expansion.  Of course adding more teams should have made this more likely rather than less.

ACC is 4-3 against the Ivy League this year and teams have lost to Wofford, Holy Cross, Boston University, Coastal Carolina, Mercer, and Tulane.

    Feinstein concludes:

"Translation: On a national level since expansion, the ACC has become, for all intents and purposes, a two-team league."

Feinstein's right, of course. I was sorry to see BC leave the Big East and believed at the time that it was a huge mistake. I loved Big East basketball, especially the rivalries with UConn, PC, Georgetown, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Villanova, and St. John's - the original Big East basketball teams. But it's not the same. It's a deep conference, true, but, the old rivalries have disappeared. I wish we could turn back the clock, because that was great basketball.

Re: How does DeFlippo still have a job?

I agree that ACC hoops is down for the count right now.  I've mentioned this before and cited prior articles.  The football ACC leaves a lot to be desired too.  It's a shame that $$$ rules all the college presidents and AD's as they eliminate decades of rivalries.

I was 50/50 with the ACC move for BC.  Based upon what's happening to the Big East now, it was probably a decent idea to get out before conrference failure.  However, if both leagues are hurt and never to be the same, then this was bad all around.

As for Big East rivalries, we definitely lost some good ones (though getting back Pitt & Syracuse now is a good move) though the BE has changed and there's too much travel involved there as well.

Hey everyone, did you hear.  Donnn says that BC doesn't want to compete.  Because he says so, it must be true.  I actually just saw that BC is planning to hold a press conference today that will state they give up and no longer strive to win, all because Donn said it to be true...

Uconn a national following?  Gimme a break.  I can't wait till Calhoun is gone.  Then we'll see what type of "national" following they have.

Re: How does DeFlippo still have a job?

I've been back and forth on whether UConn joining the ACC makes sense for them.  Right now, I would say no. Pitt, Syracuse, and WVU leaving will have some effect on basketball but there are too many great players in the northeast who want to play in the BE and at Madison Square Garden.  There will probably be a temporary hit but with UConn, Louisville, Georgetown, Nova, UND, Cincy, and Marquette they still should be strong in basketball.  I wouldn't be surprised if NYC or north Jersey talent who want to play in the BE helps revitalize Seton Hall or SJU in the future.

I'd actually be more nervous if I were in Pitt's position.  The team has been mediocre in football recently and the basketball team is very reliant on both NYC talent and coach Jamie Dixon, who could easily get poached by a higher-profile program or a team in the PAC-12.

An ND fan calling out the ACC?  Such a joke.  ND fans are still living in the Tim Brown/Tony Rice years.  Guess what, ND will never again compete for national title.  Kelly will be fired in 3 years.  And ND fans will continue to think they can't get the right coach when in reality no one wants to spend their football playing years in a tough academic school in the middle of a corn field....
