You have it part right, provpats, my boy.

The "lessons he learned" from our Dear Leader and his minion AD are precisely why he got out of the Chestnut Hill snake pit before he, too, was bitten by The Gang of Two.

And how satisfying it must be to Coach O'Brien that he (1) brought NCS out of its long doldrums, to get within a game of the ACC title game; (2) has a recruiting system in place that will build on their noteworthy progress; and (3) took the measure of BCI (nee BC) this year.

    Way to go, Coach!

    He "got out"?

His contract was not renewed. He had no choice in the matter.

He was shown the door for the same reason his team failed yesterday: complete inablity to win the big game.

Uh... his recruiting at NC State is terrible.  Without Wilson's coattails to ride, TOB is going to ride into retirement pretty soon.

well LP the real lessons he learned are how to rise up from adversity with the strong moral base that BC represents and imbues in all of its athletes in the classroom and on the athletic fields. These lessons will serve him well into the future

Well if we know one thing, we know LP can spin a huge piece of garbage (Tom OB @ NC St) into well garbage.  Dude, what are you talking about.  The guy beat BC for the first time, finished 1 game better than us and once again failed to win the big game.  Same coach, same story, just a different school.  On the other hand a BC team playing with true freshmen and a ton of sophmores won their 5th game i a row.  When they are back in the ACC champ game a year or two from now what excuse will you have them you angry loser?

    Re: NC State

LP is probably still trying to comprehend how Miami fired a football coach with a winning record.  After all, according to him, BC is the only school that would do that.  He was just discussing this today with his pick-up basketball buddy Al Skinner.   LP will be demanding that Donna Shalala and the Miami AD be fired and Randy Shannon be reinstated!  Remember, says the gasbag LP, only BC fires coaches!  Don't let Miami discredit his argument!

    Re: NC State

OB, the fightin Marine, left BC to win and after 4 years what's he done?  Better recruiting at a state school where it is easier to hide the non-academic types.  "The best facilities",OB's words not mine.  Big fan base and booster club.  But his record at NCST has been bad and in big games he disappears.  Now what could be the problem?  He has used up most of the excuses out there so roll a few heads and he can buy another couple of years.
Good luck and at least you are a lot closer to your retirement home.

    Re: NC State

Well now, lads, let's take a look at some FACTS:

    1. TOB left on his own; it is NOT true that his contract was not renewed. You have the wrong O'Brien. Sorry, Gatzie.

    2. He took over a program that was down, and rebuilt it in decent time.

    3. Provpats writes that There is a  "strong moral base that BC represents and imbues?"
    Huh?
    Tell THAT to (A) The other members of the Big East; (B) ESPN and other media;
    (C) The school band; (D) Al Skinner

    4. Coach O'Brien brought his team to top 25 ranking during this season and ended it with 2 votes for inclusion;

How many votes did WE get this year?

Pity that y'all are bitter than our former coach saw what The Gang of Two relish doing, prevented that from happening to him, went to an in-conference, and in-division foe and has that program on the rise, while ours is headed in the other direction.

Time to change the lyrics of "here all are one and their hearts are true?"

    Peace.

Tom O'Brien's record at NC State is 24–25 overall 14–18 in the ACC. Better facilities and non-academic types have not helped a coach past his prime.

"There are only two types of coaches," Jagodzinski says, "those who have been fired and those who will be."

And this encapsulates how absurd LP's rants are.

    1. BC does not fire coaches at any level above what is the norm for college coaches.

    2. College coaching is a high turnover profession.

Tom O'Brien left Boston College because his contact was not going to be renewed. And the reason it was not going to be renewed? He started to look to leave BC every year after year four or five AND he wasn not interested or able to produce a championship. We aren't sure if Coach Spaz is able to win an ACC championship. We do know that Tom O'Brien couldn't and can't.

    Hey, Gatzie,

Care to prove your contention that Tom's contract was not going to be renewed?

Of course he looked for other opportunities. Who would not, under those circumstances?

As a USNA grad and a Marine Officer, Tom was trained to quickly diagnose situations. He saw the M.O. of The Gang of Two, he saw what happened to others, and left before they could behead him. Smart man.

As to winning championships, Tom beat us this year and is closer to one now than we are.

But don't let facts stop you from criticizing this fine man and excellent coach.

Gambol on down that trail of self-contentment.
