UMass vs. Seton Hall tomorrow in the second round of the NIT @ 11:00 AM. They had a great double overtime victory against Mississippi St in the first round. They should have clinched it after 40 mins, but they showed a lot of heart to pull it out with an extra 10 mins added. I went to the NIT finals back in 08 against Ohio State. What a blast. It's not the NCAA, but making a run in the NIT is still a lot of fun, you play great competition, and its great experience for the guys. We're all praying for the NCAA next year, and this is a great first step towards that. GO UMASS!!

Re: UMASS BBALL - is it back?

The hockey east championship deserves the coverage, so it's not an either/or zero sum equation.  But UMass defiintely deserved better coverage, for instance, perhaps the Globe could have sent at least one reporter to the game??? Worst case scenario, they get to cover the final game of the season, better case, they get to report a good win against a BE team.

Herald not much better as they really buried the story, but at least they appear to have sent a reporter.

Yeah, and notice how the UMass win over Drexel was buried deep this morning in the Globe. What other MA sports news could there be in college basketball from yesterday. Great come back, Minutemen!

Well, I wouldn't say "buried" -- it's  bold-face type on the top right hand corner. What's more interesting the front page of the sports section and Ryan's "journey:" the graphic is something of an homage to Connecticut sports. He did make the perilous journey to UMass - once, but never stayed around to see some pretty fair BB played at Amherst College!
In Response to Re: UMASS BBALL - is it back? : more UConn coverage please!  To have a titan of a heavyweight basketball program within New England that has won 3 national championships in 13 years and to not write about it year-round is poor journalism!!!  Less BC/BU coverage would be nice and WAY too much hockey coverage in Boston.  Umass is good at hoops every few years and although the NIT might be a big deal for a school such as Umass, in the grand scheme of things the NIT is not widely watched or followed.  Most schools on the cusp of the NCAA tourney and don't make it pack it in and don't really care about the NIT.  However, like Uconn did way back in 1988 a NIT championship can be a springboard for bigger things.

Enough UCon coverage, I'd say - people say the Globe is a "metro" paper: If you accept that, then hockey is the winter sport here and the coverage is adequate. Poor journalism - PLEASE! The Globe has bent over backward in it's coverage of UCon sports .... if you want fawning, get out of here and go on board with the Courant.
UConn's Big Man Alex Oriakhi is transfering.  UMass is losing their Center Sean Carter (the only contributor they're losing).   Since Oriakhi is from Lowell there's a chance he could be wearing Minutemen Maroon next season.  He won't have to sit out because of the sanctions against the Huskies.

An interesting thought, but would a change of scenery make him a better player, or at least a more consistent one?
In Response to Re: UMASS BBALL - is it back? : true...  the one issue with Alex is his dad is VERY overbearing and makes some ridiculous comments (see below).  is Umass ready for a stage father like this?  Will the team be accepting of his dad's comments who thinks he knew more than Calhoun?  from the CT papers:  His father also is a strong Calhoun critic and a frequent and vociferous poster on Twitter, message boards and on The Courant's men's basketball blog. On Monday, he tweeted, "to coaches out there with a slave master mentality, [your] days are over. Bully only leads to resentments. [Basketball] is a fun game, not a mental hospital."

Could be a "mental hospital" - it's sure made a lot of us crazy!

Much as I dislike Calhoun, I can't dispute his end results. I don't want to see this kid in a UMass uniform _Kellogg is starting to put the pieces together and doesn't need someone who's not going to be part of the team.

According to Matt Vautour of the Hampshire Gazette Wake Forest Center Carson Desrosiers, a sophomore from Lawrence, is transferring. Even though he'll sit out a year, I'll take him over Orihaki.
If there was any doubt about the Globe's anti-UMass sentiment just notice how the story about BC spring football is of almost the same size as UMass' NIT win. Also, the UMass story is from the AP and there is no box score. BTW there are also 4 stories about BC hockey in today's print edition. Shameful!!!!
    Posted by gene01970
Globe needs to change their approach especially Blaudschaun ...support BC you lose let the Worcester Telegram & Gazette carry their Hockey progrm and they lose again!
