Long way to go bros, let's not put them in the Final Four yet!
    Posted by cheeroh
I don't think anyone is putting UMass in the final four next season. No one is even saying they will be a NIT final four this season. I do think they will be a top 25 team at some point next season though.  The biggest challenge they will have going into next season is overcoming the expectations placed on them.  After some lean years at Amherst the team is exciting again and people out in Amherst who were around in the early 90’s say this team is starting to remind them of those teams. Not the Camby years but the Harper Williams, Lou Roe and Derek Kellogg teams that made a few NCAA’s, won a few games in the tourney and laid the ground work for the mid-1990’s Elite 8 and final 4 teams.  Is UMass going to be a final four team in the next 5 years? Probably not but there is now hope the program is heading in the right direction again.  They are a young and talented team, the A10 tourney and the NIT are just building their experience.  For a team that was picked to finish 12th in the A10 when the season started to be where they are now is a great accomplishment.

UCONN is the only noteworthy team in New England to have gone the distance. As for Harvard's brief appearance, it was a sham to cover a dark dreary season in Boston sports.; the Red Sox, Celtics, Patriots, and Bruin's demise!

UMass vs. Seton Hall tomorrow in the second round of the NIT @ 11:00 AM. They had a great double overtime victory against Mississippi St in the first round. They should have clinched it after 40 mins, but they showed a lot of heart to pull it out with an extra 10 mins added.

I went to the NIT finals back in 08 against Ohio State. What a blast. It's not the NCAA, but making a run in the NIT is still a lot of fun, you play great competition, and its great experience for the guys. We're all praying for the NCAA next year, and this is a great first step towards that. GO UMASS!!

I am not following your "dark-dreay"  logic?  The Bruins won the cup, Patriots made the super bowl? I don't hate UConn but if you want to talk demise look there.  They were the first defending champ to lose in rd 1 since 1996, they are facing a post-season ban and sanctions next season and Calhoun may retire.  They are the postchild for a team in demise.
There was one yesterday: http://www.boston.com/sports/colleges/mens_basketball/articles/2012/03/14/umass_takes_thriller/ I'm sure they'll be a preview on Saturday and an article on Sunday, after the Seton Hall game. UMass is not in the Big Dance.  The Big Dance is going on right now, through the weekend.  The Big Dance is the news today. And there is lots else going on.  I'm not sure a UMass practice today is considered 'news'. They did a nice story about the Kellogg revival late last week.  What do you expect a newspaper to write about today, what Chaz Williams had for breakfast?    If the Minutemen ever make the dance again the amount of coverage will increase accordingly.  Right now they're in a lesser, consolation tournament and they are still getting covered.  You should save your bellyaching for more valid complaints, this one is weak.

[Well it's Saturday and still no story about today's game. The complaint isn't weak when we all know that if 9-21 BC Basketball was in the NIT there would be stories about the team daily (see the 3 stories in today's edition on the hockey team). The truth remains that there is an anti-UMass sentiment at the Globe. Why else have a story about obscure Norfolk State and not one about your state University?

I agree 100%. This paper's writers kiss up to the BC and BU alums not realizing that the UMass graduates far exceed those transplants from CT and NY. If you want to read about UMass sports I recommend going to The Herald where they understand who makes up their readership.

Funny how when UCon foundered, they did seem to start waving the UMass banner a bit harder. The Globe has always been anti-Umass and will probably never change. For better coverage, check out the Hapshire Gazette where it's UMass all the time.

The Globe does not classify itslef as a MA newspaper, just as a Boston Metro newspaper

BC sucks, and the Globe needed a bailout from left wing union concessions. Perhaps the NYT will pull the plug, and BC will be on Herald island with the Northeastern dim wits!

I can't think of any other state where the flagship state university is hated by the media as much as UMass is by the Boston-media.

    Where are the stories Globe?

UMass over Seton in the NIT!  Central crushes Brockton to take state Div 1 titlle!  Mahar wins big over Brighton for Div 2 title!

Globe falls on its face ignoring western Mass, as usual.

If there was any doubt about the Globe's anti-UMass sentiment just notice how the story about BC spring football is of almost the same size as UMass' NIT win. Also, the UMass story is from the AP and there is no box score. BTW there are also 4 stories about BC hockey in today's print edition. Shameful!!!!
