I'm very suprised that UMass to the MAC happened before the whole Big East Nova/UCF situation was settled.  Nice to see UMass being proactive.

I love the UND King's strange obsession with Boston College. Every thread no matter the subject gets turned into an anti-BC rant.  How obsessed do you have to be to turn the great news about UMASS into something about BC? Very strange.

Anyway, as a BC fan I think this is great.  I think UMASS needs to move to setup Thanksgiving weekend as "Rivalry Week" wtih UCONN  as soon as possible.

    Congrats, UMASS!

Having most home games at Gillette is great except from the student's perspective. That's a long way to go for 'home' football game.

Good news for UMass and fans.

They deserve good things, and New England college football could sure use a boost.

That, coupled with UConn's most recent national championship in hoops, give those of us in this region some sports news to cheer.

Um, you are the Notre Dame fan, right?  So by your statement of "real" big time football coming to New England with the Purdue-Umass game in 2012, you are essentially saying that your beloved Notre Dame - which has been coming to Boston for a couple of decades to play BC - is actually small-time.  Right???????

Just another dumb statement.  Let me ask you - do you ever get tired of making a fool out of yourself?

It's not just the students, my friend ..... after 40+ years of holding season tickets, we're not looking forward to weekly jaunts to Foxboro. One can hope that this move will draw the legion of alumni who have never been to a game to jump on the bandwagon. Hopefully, today's press conference will include pland for a new stadium in Amherst.

    Re: UMass Upgrade

I'll try to answer the complains from those opposed to the upgrade one by one.

    1. "The MAC is too far"
The CAA has seen two Northeastern-based programs fold up, with URI moving down to the NEC in 2013. Combined with the fact Villanova might be moving to the Big East, the closest CAA opponent outside of UNH/Maine will be in Delaware. All the sudden Ohio isn't that far anymore.

    2. "There are no natural rivals in the MAC"
I didn't see any natural rivals in the CAA either. There isn't much hatred for conference games against James Madison, Old Dominion, or Towson. At least in the MAC we have Temple.

    3. "We should have waited for the Big East"
That invite was not coming. That should have been abundantly clear when they invited TCU and are looking at UCF over UMass. They will not take a program straight from FCS.

    4. "Gillette is too far"
If that's the case why didn't you lobby to build a new stadium on campus? McGuirk is nothing more than a glorified high school stadium. Plus the locals whinning the games were too far are fighting tooth and nail against an on campus stadium due to traffic. Those people should shut up.

    5. "No one will go to games on Tuesday night"
UMass students will go if the games are on TV. Basketball games on ESPN were the only games that came close to selling out the Mullins. We want to be on TV. We were not on TV in the CAA.

    6. "What about UNH and Maine?"
Enjoy the NEC. Albany looks to be on the upswing. I do feel bad for your program, but we didn't want to be at the point where we had to move to the NEC with you.

    7. "What about recruiting?"
How many local students dream about playing in Gillette?

    8. "This isn't worth it. UMass was a national power in 1-AA/FCS and should have stayed put."
Can anyone name the last FCS champion? The game was played in Frisco Texas on the same day as the Cotton Bowl. UMass last played in the title game at Chattanoga. From there Detroit isn't a big step down.

    9. "We should have built up the basketball program first to get the money for a stadium".
We didn't do it when the program had money coming in from Calipari. That was the time to do it. Now the basketball program is broken and it will take at least 5 years to repair the damage of the early Kellogg years.

    10. "It's too much money"
The program loses $3 million a year at the FCS level. The odds of making money at the FBS level is much higher than at the FCS level.

    11. "Why do we need big time football? Harvard does just fine at the FCS level. So do BU and Northeastern without football."
If you missed Tracy Jan's smear campaign UMass is percieved as an inferior institution. Playing at an inferior athletic level only feeds into that. Plus there's a school on Chestnut Hill that became a household name soley due to football.

If this move didn't happen now, it was never going to happen.

Not a big UMASS fan however, Purdue, a UND arch rival for years, is a good start for those UMASS alums and students to see a quality Big 10 Conference contender come East; BTW: Purdue AD is a former Andover boy ...

    Re: UMass Upgrade

This is a good move for UMass as there is really no reason that UMass can't compete with Boston College, UConn, Syracuse, Rutgers, Temple, and others in football. A Div. 1AA game between UMass and UNH drew 33,000 at Gillette. UMass is stepping up to Div. 1A, Purdue may be added to the schedule for 2012 and UMass is talking with Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Washington, and others. In additional, annual home and home games can be set with Boston College, UConn, and Syracuse. Think a game against Virginia Tech or Texas A&M vs. Massachusetts might sell out Gillette? Where's the vision folks?

UMass will eventually need a new on-campus facility. Please google Gerald J. Ford Stadium (link attached below) on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas to see a shining example of a new stadium opened in 2000 for $42M. Ford Stadium is the most recent Div. 1A stadium to open. It seats 32,000 today and can be easily expanded to 45,000. A capital campaign combined with soliciting help from the state as UConn did, and a plan to step up from the MAC to the Big East in 6-8 years could go a long way toward getting it done. Here's the link:
