Re: EMASS Girls H.S. Hockey 2013-2014

Exciting game between Winchester and Fontbonne last night. I give both teams credit for working hard the entire game. Fontbonne went ahead 2-0 after 1, Winchester ahead 4 -2 early in the 3rd, Fontbonne tied it up with a few minutes left, Fontbonned scored with 35 seconds left to win it. Can anyone explain what happened with 90 seconds left in the game? At this point the score was tied. Winchester was on a power play, scored, lit the lamp, celebrated, lined up for the face off, then the Ref skated to the Zamboni door, had a conversation with someone off the ice, and waved off the goal. I have never seen that. It looked like the Zamboni driver decided the outcome of the game.

Have you found out more about the Winchester game? That sounds really off but nothing surprises me any more when it comes to girls ice hockey.

Well based on the local write up, it was USA vs Russia again.  Supposedly the net was off its moorings was all the Winchester Coach was told.  The write up mentioned that the referees conferred with the goal judge.  Lots of penalties called in the game (9) and 3 of them led to goals, 2 by Fontbonne as they rallied from down 2 in the third.

First kind of a surprise in D1 was St Mary's losing tonight to Hingham, but they have been up and down all season.

Might be losing your 3 top scoring forwards (AB, SC & SM) to prep?

    [/QUOTE]

Not sure about 1 of those 3, add 1 at D to that list, so at least 3, possibly 4.

Top 3 league scorers?  individuals?  None of them are top league scorers unless you are talking about team scorers which Is MUCH different.   Are initials of players or teams?   Heard many going to prep but thats typical, it happens every year.  Going to be A fun weekend.

Re: EMASS Girls H.S. Hockey 2013-2014

He never said they were top league scorers. He clearly said "YOUR top scorers". He's right...they are the top team scorers. They are all also defensemen who were put at forward this year because the team had very few of them.   Yes, everyone loses 1-2 every year. They will be losing almost an entire lines worth of players and young, talented ones at that plus have no goalie coming in. For a team that only has 13 to start with, that's a big hole.

First major upset last night with Sandwich beating Tewksbury/Methuen.

Lots of very interesting games in D1 this weekend.

Tewksbury/Methuen ran out of gas.  Unfortunately, their top D was out with a concussion.  She would have made a big difference.  Sandwich is a very similar team - one solid line, a couple good D, and a good goalie.  Playing against Duxbury, Falmouth, and Hingham regularly has them well prepared for the tournament.  They should go far.

Re: EMASS Girls H.S. Hockey 2013-2014

If Tewksbury wants to get better, they will also need to step up their out of conference matches.  A stellar record against average out of conference foes is nice, but does not help prepare for the tournement.  That is one reason St Marys did so well many years, they had already faced many of the best teams during the season and played well (usually winning) in those challenging matches.  (Of course having a very small conference meant they had to have a lot of out of conference games as well.)  Not much you can do about conference foes and schedules, but also keep in mind this a rising program that now has a track record of success that they can hopefully build on in coming seasons.

Great game Norwood vs Westwood.  Could have gone either way.  Westwood had good play

offensively and defensively from two 1st line Defense, #14 and #5, #12.

Kept Westwood in the game.  norwood had outstanding play from the "whole team".

Westwood Norwood game.  Norwood dominated, saw Westwood goalie's deficiencies. Luck of the draw that Westwood won. Norwood shut down Westwood top scorers from the get go.  Westwood first line D, two of the goals were assisted by the first line D taking control and playing aggressive, which is crucial in the playoffs. Second line forwards for Westwood played very well.   One take away for Westwood, they need more shots, use of their points and conditioning.  Norwood successfully used their defense by shutting down Westwood goalscorers and using their defense to take many shots and were a big factor in their game.  Interesting to watch the rest of the season playout. Dedham will be a tough team to beat in the D2 bracket.

had not seen either team up until today and did not think Watertown/Belmont would beat Andover even with being higher seed. Andover played a better schedule but W/B goalie was better in this game.  it was a even game up and down the ice and both teams played hard. ref's  did a good job as well.

Down to the final 8 and it looks like 7out of 10 teams from the Hingham show case are out with only AB,AC. and Duxbury remaining. All three have a chance to win with AB having the toughest draw. Anyone what to pick the final 4??

I'll pick AB, WB, BD, and AC for the final 4, just so it is an all initials final four, but if the past is any indication of future performance having me pick your team is the kiss of death.

I would also like to point out another questionable use of waivers.  Shrewsbury, who just beat Dedham in the D2 tournament, would have had 14 skaters plus 2 goalies without waivers.  14 is a little low with injuries, but their are many teams that go with 14 without using waives, such as Woburn.  With four 8th graders Shrewsbury would have had 18 skaters plus two goalies, and it is hard to argue any team really needs more than 18 skaters.  Who really needs more than 4 D and three lines, but I guess Shrewsbury felt they needed two more skaters, so they picked up 2 7th graders to bring their team up to 20 skaters.  And, surprise, one of those 7th graders ends up being their high scorer, and pulls off a hat trick to defeat Dedham in the tournament.

@gobeez Yeah, we discussed BDs waiver abuse earlier this season.  I'm sure if there weren't any talented 8th graders, BD would have managed with 16 skaters.
