    DOWN GOES THE MIGHTY LEXINGTON!

I have a big problem with you using Lexington and overated in the same sentence. First, congrats to Central. They have a hell of a team and, last night, deserved to win the game. They did the things that Lexington usually does in crunch situations--hit their free throws & make critical defensive stops--to win the game. But make no mistake, Lexington definately belonged and really had several chances to win the game, but missed crucial free throws, especially front ends of several one-on-ones. Lexington is certainly not overated. As far as who they played this year, you can make an argument that Central played better competition during the year...but Lexington didn't play cupcakes either. They beat three teams two times apiece that are now in their respective division north finals (Watertown div 3, Belmont and Bedford in Div 2). Bedford is a team Lexington scrimmaged twice this year. Lexington also won the two games in the Chelsea Christmas Tourneyment, one against Wilbur Cross (one of the best teams in Connecticut) and Cambridge (who themselves are in the div 1 North finals). Congrats to Lexington for a great season (certainly not one that was overated). People who really understand basketball know that Lexington had an outstanding year, that unfortunately, came up a little short. Those Lexington kids did their high school proud.

Most of the Central players over the years come from Lawrence, where the school is.

Lawrence High School beat Central 3 times this year and numerous times over the past 3 years. Central split with Lowell this year and lost roughly 4 of 6 to Andover before this year. Newton North had a Metco advantage. How many kids attend Brockton High? Central has around 1200 kids, 50% girls.

When I attended Newton North they had 2700 kids for grades 10-12. Kids choose to come to Central just as they choose to move from Reading to Andover to play ball at Andover High School like the Barry brothers did 4 years ago--both started for Andover.....or sharpshooter Meghan Thomann did moving from Tewksbury to Andover to play on Andover's girls team.

Why would you think people want to attend Catholic School over the public schools? Many around here don't like traditional values and 89% attend Public schools.

I was at the game last night. Lexington was definitely not overrated. They gave Central everything they could handle. Lexington would have been an elite team in the MVC--they were definitely no cupcake. I congratulate them as they're well coached and fundamentally sound. Their kids play good clean basketball.

Central hung around all night and spurted at the end as Lexington was hurt when 6' 7" Cunha fouled out with 3 minutes to go and from that point the Lexington guards were unable to penetrate getting the ball down low to O'Keefe and Henneberry whereas Junior De La Hoz and Billy Marsden were unconscious hitting 3's......and Marsden hit his foul shots (hit 10 of 10 against Boston Latin). Lexington outplayed Central most of the game, but couldn't close the deal at the end as Central's tournament hardened experience showed playing well under pressure whereas Lexington seemed to panic not having played many close games.

Instead of blaming Lexington's lack of competition perhaps the blame is Lexington blew everyone out, so when the game got tight at the end they hadn't been there pretty much all year to close out a tough game before, whereas Central has.

This Lexington team was good.......and I'm a Central fan.

I always laugh when I hear people talk about the "recruiting" that the Catholic schools do. Like slowhand says they don't have to, there is a waiting list at all 5 of the CC schools. One of the biggest reasons for their sporting success has to do with the intelligence of their athletes. As the waiting lists get longer the smarter a student will have to be to gain admission. So quite possibly they might be fielding even better teams down the road.

Central Catholic also smoked perenial Rhode Island powerhouse Bishop Hendricken this year.

Lack of playing close games did hurt Lexingtom, no doubt.

Central Catholic doesn't recruit--period. They don't have to --never did.

They have a 1300 person school and have 3 applicants for every seat. It's located in one of the poorest cities on the east coast but half the student body comes from some of the wealthiest suburbs in Mass and NH--it's a magic place. The facilities aren't much, the endowment is miniscule and the campus is non-existent but the spirit is very powerful. It's been picked as the outstanding Catholic school in Massachusetts. It's made an enormous commitment to Lawrence kids and a lot of it is funded by suburban parents who pay a little extra. Educational justice, access and opportunity for the least favored youth of Lawrence are the ideals that govern Central.

Central has great and enthusiastic coaches. You really want to have to play to be an athlete at Central. Athletes get from Lawrence to their own homes oftentimes after 7 pm. Their football teams always have 100 kids--their track teams 200.

You could take an all-star team from the area made up of kids on area teams that don't get into Central Central and it would win the State Champiuonship in a heartbeat.

It was a great win last night against a great Lexington team. Please don't take anything awa from Central or Lexington.

In my opinion Lexington always plays a weak schedule and that hurts them. When they run through their own league they are not facing stiff competition. And I cant even recall them playing an out of leauge game against anyone tough, except for occasionally in a x-mas tournament this yr. Compare them to a team like Cambridge who no matter how good or bad they are play a tough schedule every year. This year they played (Brockton, BC High, Lynn Tech, Lexington, Madison Park). Thats without factoring in the GBL teams they play in (Everett, SOmerville, Arlington).

    Ned;

If I was picking and choosing kids for Central on athletic ability, I'd have an all-star team made up of kids from 6 or 7 area schools who didn't get into Central and who would kill this Central team.

Central does NOT RECRUIT. If they did, would they really have 5-6 losses in a season? I think not. Central isnt even the best team in the MVC. And Lexington is a decent team, just overrated because they played teams not up to par with them. Lexington isnt unstoppable or anything, they are equally matched with the "tough" MVC teams. And thats what some people are saying, and other people are making excuses to make Central look bad.

    Excellent post by Harkins.

Central beat the Hendricken team from RI now in the RI tourney final 75-53 at Hendricken.

900 students apply for up to 350 spots at Central....lots of kids want to go there for the academics, values, well run, and family oriented school. Loads of Central faculty went to school there--some teaching there 35 years. Tuition is $8K but the real cost is 9K. School makes up tuition cost with alumni donations so each family gets 1K off per kid. Some are there on scholarship or partial scholarship depending on need. They had a chance to move to Andover but stayed in Lawrence as their mission is to help the poor/disadvantaged.

The thugs/criminals living in Lawrence could burn the whole city down, but would leave Central alone for all it does for the community.

No wonder so many kids apply and want to go to school there.

I think private schools should play private schools and public schools should play public school. Its not fair for this private schools that recruit kids to play schools that don't recruit kids.

Hmmm..Belmont & Watertown both playing in the finals. Looks like Lexington's competition that they beat by double digits isn't so weak after all. Soxfan, stick with you opinions about Andover, you're "out of your league" when you comment about Lexington. Lexington congratulations on another great season.

You can not blame the central loss on the refs. Central played horrible. They had a huge height advantage over Cambride and they didn't use it at all. Gonzalez should have had a huge game he was much taller than the guy who was guarding him. But he only scored 6 points.

Grow Up. You can never count a whole game on the refs. Central blew a 8 point lead at the end of the game. Central was bigger, yet im sure the rebound margin wasn't much in their favor. And you have to give Cambridge credit, with no one on the court over 6'2 they worked their butts off and had more will to win than Central did. And Gonzalez was plain non-existent, and complaining at every chance he could. Central is a good team, and Cambridge worked their asses off to win the game. Great Game period.

    DOWN GOES THE MIGHTY LEXINGTON!

this is the second straight game where a team loses a huge lead to Cambridge in the final minutes and all their fans do is whine about the refs. What both Lowell and Central Catholic fans need to do is stop crying about the refreeing, which was pretty good in both games, and realize your teams flat out choked to a Cambridge team with more toughness.

If you want to cry about something, cry about the fact your big man played soft the entire game and was getting the business from Cambridge defenders who were half a foot shorter than him. Cry about your guards who couldn't find the lane because Cambridge man-to-man had them locked. Cry about your guys missing crucial free-throws when it became nutcracking time.

And if you wanna cry about the ref not calling the charge, then your soft too. You looking for a ref to play you out with a charge call wit 5 seconds left? SOFT SOFT SOFT. Play ball, thats what Boonie and the Cambridge boys did.

I've seen far better Cambridge teams (2000, 2001) over the years than this one. But what they don't got in talent, they make up in heart and toughness. Those boys just don't quit. Thats why you can't count Cambridge out against BC High. If you wanna play the game on paper or in the layup lines, then Cambridge shoulda lost the last 4 games. So talk about how BC High blasted them a month ago, if you seen the last few games you wouldn't be surprised by anything Cambridge does at this point.
