People have always been free to call me a racist.

I'm glad that's what you took from my post.

It tells me all I need to know about you.

In Response to Re: "Holier-Than-Thou" Saint Dungy as Great as John Wooden??? : Why the press?  I didn't write the article.  I simply responded to faust and Pmike, and I think I made it fairly clear what I thought.  Sorry you didn't catch that.  Simply - as a coach, no. As a coach (or former one) who cares about more than wins and losses and uses his position to affect change, I think (as the writer was trying to suggest) he could be someday.

Why the drawn out diatribe? Why can't you ever give a straight answer...yes or no?? Don't we have enough socialists, civil rights charlatans, politicians, and evangelical frauds in this country already who are "trying to effect change"? Dungy, who is largely a creation of the media, falls into one or more of those categories.

Apparently, you know little about John Wooden. He wasn't interested in "effecting change"...except with the players he coached. In fact, he felt that people doing such things to the detriment of the rights of others was wrong. He believed in the individual, and preached old fashioned American values.

Wooden believed in leadership...and in leading by example through one's own life. He didn't go to the jails to try to "convert sinners"...or hold out his religious beliefs for all to see, like "The Pius One". He taught his players that winning wasn't the important thing...but giving their very best effort and playing to their full potential was.

Wooden stressed that full potential and success could be reached by one who followed the values and character traits laid out in his Pyramid of Success. One of his favorite sayings was, "failing to prepare is preparing to fail". He practiced what he preached in life...and put his family over basketball. In a word, Wooden was "genuine". Dungy, on the other hand, comes across as a self aggrandizing phony.

By equivicating as you have with the simple question, "Do you believe Dungy is in the same class as Wooden", you have given yet another example of why no one here should take you seriously.

I was hesitant to respond to this thread again, but I would like to ask anyone who thinks they know, why it was so important for the relevant media to point out that when the Bears met the Colts in that pathetic excuse for a Super Bowl, that no matter who won, the important thing was that an "African American" coach would finally hoist the trophy? Both Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy would run screaming to the nearest consulate if you dropped them into the darkest heart of Africa. Sell this bullsh*t somewhere else.

You're not supposed to question it just pat yourself on the back for the progress we have made as a society.  Now go find someone who says something about race, twist their words around and remove all context until their statement could be seen as racist.  Then call them a racist.  Then you are solving the problem, that quite possibly doesn't exist without us constantly exacerbating it.

    1) Parts of Indy are very racist and were(are) very strong Klan areas. (When I went to school in Boston I saw a black man beaten on the steps of City Hall with an American Flag)

RESPONSE: Parts of every state are in some way "racist".

    2) Dungy is a strong man of faith. A sinner like all of us with good and bad.

RESPONSE: True men of faith don't advertise it. Dungy does.

    3) He won a super bowl and was the first black to do so.

RESPONSE: And?? So what!! It's only a big deal if one accepts the bogus premise that blacks are somehow inferior beings.

    4) He made a crappy comment about BB regarding Spy Gate which was out of line and un-called for. For that reason I lost a lot of respect for him.

RESPONSE: I completely agree. Would a class act like John Wooden have responded in a similar fashion? Would a true "Man of God" have made the comments Dungy did? Absolutely not. But, a guy who is pandering to the media, and striking back at a hated rival, would. Not so pius, are you, Tony!
