2 Teams expressing interest in Ryan Mallet

    From yahoo.com:

At one point considered a lock for the first round, Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett fell all the way to the 74th overall selection in 2011 after the pre-draft process raised a variety of red flags. The New England Patriots took a shot on the former Razorback in the third round and that is where the 24-year-old remains to this day.

Ryan MallettICONMallett has only played a handful of snaps since leaving Arkansas in 2011.

Whether or not Mallett is still backing up Tom Brady come Week 1 of the 2013 season is another story.

Per Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the Cleveland Browns andTampa Bay Buccaneers have contacted the Patriots regarding Mallett’s availability via a trade. The 6-6, 245-pounder still has two years left on his four-year rookie deal.

It’s no surprise to see Cleveland inquiring as to the availability of Mallett, considering the team has a new front office and coaching staff in place and probably isn’t sold on Brandon Weeden as the organization’s signal-caller of the future. But the Buccaneers’ interest once again raises questions as to the team’s commitment to current quarterback Josh Freeman.

Mallett has appeared in just four games during his two seasons in the NFL, completing just one of four pass attempts with an interception.

It will be interesting to see if this story goes any further than this point. But if nothing happens with Mallett during the current free agent frenzy, don’t be shocked if these types of rumors surface again come draft time.

Buffalo is going to be looking for a QB too.  This is a weak year for QBs in both draft and free agency, so if the Pats want to trade Mallet, it's a good year for it.  Trading him would create a need for a back-up, however . . . and that might be a challenge this year given the dearth of QBs.  Somebody like Fitzpatrick would make a nice back up, but this year Fitz may actually be able to land a starter position.

Just bring in Cassel or Hoyer. I think Hoyer is available. If not, he will be once cut by Arizona.

Either would work if available.  If Mallet isn't really the future, it's a good year to dump him for draft picks and move on.

Arizona gave Hoyer a 2nd round tender offer last week, so they are planning to keep him.

It's a good time to trade him. There aren't a lot of good QB options through free agency or the draft,so that drives his value up.I think BB will pull the trigger at the right time and maximize a return for him.

I like the idea of bringing Cassel back as a second QB if they trade Mallet too.He knows the system and the Patriots know what they're getting with him.

A different source in the same article said Patriots coach Bill Belichick will not part with the former third-round pick. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady signed a three-year extension this offseason, putting him in New England through 2017, when he will be 40 years old. Mallett has two years left on his rookie contract. Cabot wrote the Patriots wouldn't part with him for less than a second-round pick.

Sign Hoyer or Cassel for our backup if we trade Mallet . . . it will not be to the Bills like we did Drew as the Bills will be taking Gino Smith with their first round pick . . . another of the gun and run QBs that are coming into the league.
