Mayo goes late 5th round.  Hopefully people are waking up to what a huge disapointment this guy is.

he is not nearly as bad as you say he is....he has led the team in tackles it seems like every year since he has been in new england and he is the captain of the defense.

Of the 5 picks before him and 5 after, only Clady was better than him

I honestly feel that if he were replaced, it would make no difference either way...what so ever. Hell when he used to go down and that undrafted free agent (what was his name?) would come in...wasn't much of a difference. If only we could take his 40 million dollar contract and spend it elsewhere...

The Pats have 3 guys that are arguably best suited to be an ILB (Mayo, Spikes, and Hightower).  They are weak at OLB.  Of course you tend to look better when the front 3-4 are sealing gaps and taking on blockers.  Tedy Bruschi was a big benificary of the D line in front of him.

Pats need to improve speed at OLB.  No doubt about it.

It was the weakest draft of the decade and one our resident moron fans is on here bashing the 2008 DROY.

    LMAO

How's Brady's last 3 AFC title games at home, TCal?  Hmm?

Hard to win with Mayo whiffing on TD runs....lol

Mayo is exactly what they want him to be a SAM who is  tackling machine. They want someone who is a 3 down player that does not miss tackles and covers decently.

He is not going to make spectacular plays because they don't ask him to be a playmaker. He will blitz occasionally but other than that he is a very good SLB who does his job.

Not to be disrespectful, but how the heck do you know what the Patriots want or expect from any player?   Answer: you don't

Bruschi had 30.5 career sacks, Mayo has 7.5 through 5 years. Bruschi had 12 career interceptions Mayo has 3. Bruschi 11 career forced fumbles Mayo has 8 already. Mayo has 17 pass defenced Bruschi had 31. Bruschi had 735 career tackle, Mayo through 5 years has 648. Now the value of Bruschi is better as a 3rd round draft pick but do you want every MLB taken in the first round to be a Ray Lewis or a Patrick Willis? He's a good solid player who could still improve throughout his career and BB took him to run the D. I heard a pundit on NFL network say a head coach would be willing to give up a bit of ability so if he's getting a leader as well. Stop being so romantic about the past man, if Mayo sucks Bruschi sucked too

    1 + 1 does not = 11

Bruschi was great and a play maker.  Fins game in the snow says it all.  Greatest Int ever.  Name one Mayo moment???

What are we talking about here? If Mayo is a good player or if he was the wrong pick in the 2008 draft?

Funny thing is, Rusty would be calling him a bust if he played for the Jets.

The 5th round part.  Disappointment is a relative term.

    Re: 2008 ReDraft

Personally I think he is solid (not spetacular) on the inside, but with Wilfork in front of him, who wouldn't be? On the outside playing in more space I think he struggles - I watch him miss tackles out there and get blocked by god damn third string tight ends out there. It's not what 40 million dollar linebackers are suppossed to do. They don't send him on blitzes because after 5 years he's proven that he isn't a good pass rusher. He has also proven that he can't cover no matter where they put him. That tackle at the goal line on Rice would of been tough to make for a great linebacker, when I saw it was Mayo trying to make it I knew it wouldn't be made.

This guy is fantastic at making tackles ten yards down the field when the guy running with the ball is being chased by 80% of our defense...put him one on one or with a blocker that he needs to shed in front of him and it's nothing special. He's nothing special - yet his contract is - and it's not helping things. It was the same last year, the year before, the year before, the year before...it'll be the same next year too. Average.
