    2010 Patriots?

I know there is plenty left of this season but I'm wondering whill Patriots keep Mankins (I hope so), and what will be their "Big" move of the off season? As it stands now I want Vollmer to be RT or LT depending on if they can find an upgrade to the other tackle spot. I'd like an upgrade pass rushing specialist (I pray for this) and a WR and RB to round things out.
So a RT or LT, a DE/LB that can pin his ears back, a WR to eventually replace Moss and play opposite him for a year or two and a RB to add to the mix because they are a bit long in the tooth.  If they can be smart with picks and Free agency there is no reason why they can't get 4 quality players.

i think a smart lock down corner (if one even exists anymore) would be the best thing this team could ask for.

I dont understand why the Pats havnt signed 2 of thier 4 pro-bowlers yet.  I didnt realize that Mankins needs to be re-signed.  As far as Wilfork, dont get me started on that.  Some of these moves I just dont understand.

Signing Wilfork and/or Mankins will be priority #s one and two. I could be wrong, but I think there are two franchise tags in an uncapped year. I still don't understand why we signed Kaczur for so much money when we have to sign these better players first.

Dont forget to add Bodden to that list.  He has done well for us.  I hope he is back as well.  Ideally we resign, Wilfork, Mankins, Bodden, cut AT.  Add a OLB, RB, WR, OLB/DE hybrid in the draft in the first 4 picks.  I know u cant go into a draft aiming for positions, but I can dream.  Oh and a late rd OG to.

If it ends up as an uncapped yr, they won't need to franchise Mankins.  By terms of the CBA he will only be a restricted free agent meaning the Pats have to tender him a certain contract and if he does go to another team, Pats would receive something like a 1st and 3rd rd pick as compensation.

Be nice to see what UFA will be RFA if there is no agreement and this becomes a uncapped year. Does that also mean Gostowkski is now a restricted free agent? Article on the Globe talked about Mankins being restricted, then the Pats would franchise Wilfork. I rather see them work out two long term contracts instead. Resign Bodden would be nice then go after a pass rusher and 3rd receiver in FA and address the age of running backs and a few other postions on both sides of the ball in the draft.

    Re: 2010 Patriots?

People that cry out against NOT signing Wilfork and/or Mankins yet clearly don't understand the fundamentals of business. Just because a player cries or demands a contract, which, fortunately, neither of them have done, doesn't mean you whip out the checkbook. The point is to let them play out their current contract, the one they signed, you know? By using up this last year, the Patriots are doing several things:

    1) Maximizing the most possible value from the aforementioned player(s). It's like using your credit card to pay for a week-long stay at a nice resort and then leaving after the fourth day. You've paid, you've agreed to pay, so why not just use it up?
    2) Watching how the CBA plays out because that's going to affect EVERYTHING labor-related. With a shaky outlook, you can't start doling out contracts. Frankly, agents are also understanding this and that's why we didn't see as many hold-outs this off-season.
    3) Developing/evaluating other personnel. In the NFL you can't keep everyone so you have to have back-up plans. By having this extra year, Bill was able to see who is expendable and who isn't.

And remember, it's always easy to spend someone else's money. There's a reason why NFL owners are billionaires and we're not.

They can alsways franchise Wilfork if need be and if it's uncapped Mankins is restricted.

If we franchise Wilfork, then he will use up all of our cap space just like Cassel did last year.

    Re: 2010 Patriots?

A lot depends on salary cap... I fwe don't have acap then things might go like this

    Free agents

Leigh Bodden, CB (has in his contract that he can not be franchised)

    Derrick Burgess, LB
    Kevin Faulk, RB
    Jarvis Green, DE
    Chris Hanson, P
    Stephen Neal, G

    Junior Seau, LB
    Ben Watson, TE
    Vince Wilfork, DT

Keep Faulk and Neal on 1-2 year deal. Lock up Green, Bodden  on 3-4 year contracts and tag poor old Vince.

Watson Burgess and Hanson can hit the highway

     Restricted Free agents

    Stephen Gostkowski, K
    Logan Mankins, G

    Chris Taylor, RB
    Pierre Woods, LB

Tender 1st and 3rd pick on Mankin. Throw a 2nd on Woods and 1st on the Ghost.
    Taylor can walk.
