OK  Solder was tagged as #17 by USA today!

Im thinking he is going be a Tackle elegible reciever  or possibly #4 TE

    BB loves position flexibilty

also maybe a trade up i the mix for D??

He will be our starting LT next year. 6'8"
They will make another move to get a good player soon. They got the chips to move.

Guys.  I would rather have had Carimi.  But Solder has upside, big time.  He's tall, long, very fast and can be developed.  We need to offer Light a one year deal and bring this kid up to speed.  Pick makes sense in terms of OT.  Top need if Light is gone.

Understand the pick, but could they have drafted Jordan and traded up to get Solder?

He's got tremendous upside and our OL coach can get him to be dominant but he needs to add some serious weight.

He is the proto-typical OL player for the Pats. I just hope that they get a pass rusher now. That's what they really need

I'm wondering if they could have moved to TB or KC, if they wanted to move ahead of SD for a DL player, and still would have gotten him

true.  SD taking Luiget was even bigger shock.  Jordan might still be around.  His size will worry 34 teams.

Next pick really does need to be pass rush, though. I don't think they can afford to take Ingram even if he is available. Front 7 needs help.

edit: But BB did say this draft would be about the trenches, so I'm not too worried

    Emily Schaible:

    Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

Scouts Inc. pros: Average LOT in NFL is 6-foot-5 1/4, 305 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash in 5.25 seconds. Solder is taller (6-8 1/4), heavier (319) and considerably faster (4.96). Does a nice job of quickly indentifying and covering up targets when pulling around edge or down the line. Quickly reads and reacts to blitzes from the second and third level of defense.

Scouts Inc. cons: Does not always get great depth with first step, which leads to him oversetting at times -- and that leaves him vulnerable versus double move (see: Missouri DE Aldon Smith sack in 2009). Plays too high at times. Not a natural knee bender. Can be rocked back on occasion by effective speed-to-power moves when not in balance.

YUP Agreed. Richard Seymour was traded for Nate Solder.  Solder may one day be a good player, but likely 2 yrs away; and TB will be what....  47 by then?

Easily could have got a Tackle at 28.  This is demoralizing.

They better keep 28 - Heyward?

Hopefully Ingram goes before 28 ....

In Response to Re: 2011 Patriots Draft Options ***IT'S GO TIME!*** : Yeah. NE is the best at coaching up OL. They make UDFA wrestlers into quality players. This kid will be amazing. NE had better  get a pass rusher. They should come up a few spots for someone like Reed or something like that.
    Posted by zbellino

I have no doubt that Dante and BB will get the most out of this kid, but to me that just proves the point that they could have coached up a lesser talent at this position.
We need help on D so bad and now we are letting conference foes like SD take guys we could have had.

Solder is converted TE, moved to tackle as soph. allowed just 5 sacks in 1400-plus pass plays over three years
