Yeah, SF and Washington both seem to be angling towards the 1st overall pick. I'd like to see him end up in SF, reunite with Harbaugh etc. -

Think I typo'd his name, should be Davin Meggett (I've fixed). Decent size (5-9 215, was Maryland's leading rusher last year, platooning with Da'Rell Scott and averated 5.71 YPC. He also has the good bloodlines and BB is very familiar with his father (good football player, but is in prison for the next 30 years for sexual assault). -

In Response to Re: ***2012 Patriots Draft Thread***:In Response to Re: ***2012 Patriots Draft Thread*** : PL, Welcome back, glad to be back at it! It's early, but at this point, the player I have in mind is Manti Te'o, the LB from ND. He was a big time recruit out of HS and has lived up to the reputation. He's an absolute animal on the field, looks like a 3 down player, has a good size speed ratio, great instincts and loves to blow up ball carriers; secure tackler. I also see him having the athleticism and versatility to play inside in a 34 (which he did last year and will do again this season) as well as kick outside in 43 sets. Decided to add Blackmon and Jeffrey for now as WR looks to be a potential need moving forward though I don't see either landing in Foxboro when all is said and done, anything is possible though.
Posted by mbeaulieu07
Yes, Manti is high on my list as well. I'm only going off of 2010 performance, but I expect him to be 100+ tackles again this year. He like Mayo is a tackling machine.
thanks for adding Blackmon, but I also believe he won't make it to the Pats. I don't see him slipping out of the top 12, and our 2 picks (assuming we keep them) will probably be north of 20.
I think Luke is in range, as is Manti. I also think Micheal Brewster from Ohio State as a Center would be a nice addition late first round/early second. Perhaps too high for a C?
I'm going to make a short, short list based on need at this point, as well as projected draft position. -

SAINTS seem to have as good a chance as any NFC team of getting to Indy in Feb. ~ Pretty cool if Pats end up with picks #31 and #32 .
( If the Raiders implode with Hue Jax at the controls maybe even pick #33 )
How sick would this thread get this offseason if Pats owned 31-33 ? -

In Response to Re: ***2012 Patriots Draft Thread***:In Response to Re: ***2012 Patriots Draft Thread*** : you read way too much into what I said. I wanted BB to draft a RB last year, I didnt think he would draft 2 of them that early, thought he would get early one and maybe 1 later on (hoped for helu). BUT going 2 that early means not getting 1 before round 5 unless someone gets a really bad injury. After watching the playoff game against the Jests I was 100% sure that a O-lineman would be number one on BB's board, though I will admit I thought it would be Pouncey,I'm very pleased with the Solder selection. With two firsts and two seconds already in hand I'll predict BB will draft a OLB or Safety with the first round pick he uses, because we all know he's not going to use them both!!!!

MB,
Thanks for starting up another draft thread. Last year's thread was truly an epic one and I hope this one follows suit.
I'm going to start off with 2 names on your list that I'll be hyping all year:
Mike Brewster (C - Ohio State) - Solid, smart and plays with good technique. From what I've seen and read about Brewster, he's better in pass protection and could probably add more strength, but he's clearly the best at his position in this class. With Koppen being a free agent after this year, I believe Brewster could step right in and become a starter from day 1.
Ryan Broyles (WR - Oklahoma) - Shifty, explosive and extremely productive WR with good hands and great route-running ability. More quick than fast. Reminds me a lot of Deion Branch in his first go around with the Pats. Has played in a spread offense at OU very similar to one the Patriots run and caught 118 passes for 1452 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2010, and then followed that up with 13 catches for 170 yards and 1 TD in the Orange Bowl victory over UCONN. -

I'm a huge Broyles guy, think he's an ideal fit in NE's short/intermediate passing scheme predicated on clean routes and RAC ability. Realistically, he's prob at the top of my WR board at this point, in regards to who I think they'd target.
I do agree that the OC position will be one to follow this season and Brewster is definitely a player of interest to follow. -

Here are some of my 2012 draft prospect targets for the Pats. I won't list the pick or round as I think with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, we are sure to move 1 or 2 of them into later round picks given we don't have any or many. So, kids I would like to see the Pats target in the draft early (somewhere in rounds 1-4)are and in no particular order;
Philip Blake (C) Baylor > One of the biggest Centers in the draft (6'3", 315). Very physical center, good mobility (played T before moving to C in 2010). Plays with a similar mean streak as Mankins.
Brandon Washington (G) Miami > Good run blocking and pass protecting G, athletic (6'4", 320), projected as a round 4/5 selection). Like to see him added as depth behind Mankins/Cannon, ideally in round 5. We acquire a round 4/5 pick by trading possibly a 2 into round 3.
Ryan Broyles (WR) Oklahoma > MB mentioned him as a potential target. This kid has done nothing but produce, produce, produce over the past 3 seasons. Good route runner, excellent YAC, great straightline speed. I could see him taking over for Branch. Round 2 acquisition possibly with Raiders pick. He'll need to be taken early, and I see this as a position of need, potentially high need if CJ doesn't pan out.
Robert Lester (S) Alamaba > (6'2", 210). Projects as a SS, but has the speed and athleticism to play FS or SS. Natural ballhawk, nice compliment to Chung, Meriweather replacement. Looks like a late first/early second acquisition.
Manti Te'o (LB) Notre Dame > (6'2", 240). Tackling machine. Has flexibility to play any of the LB positions in a 4-3. Nice compliment to Mayo and Spikes. The 3 of Mayo, Spikes and Manti would be a formidable LB starting corps with Fletcher and Guyton providing depth. Likely someplace mid to late 1st round pick required.
Don't love any of the DT's or DE's (3-4) coming out next year that can be had when we pick. There are a few 4-3 DE's that I really like (Quinten Coples, Donte Paige-Moss, Brandon Jenkins), and a few DT's that I like (Jerel Worthy being one), but don't think any one of these guys will drop to late round 1, or where we could potentially pick. -

One guy to keep an eye on is Vontaze Burfict Linebacker from Arizona State. The guy plays with a mean streak and is fast. He's probably the best linebacker in the country imo. If he can channel his aggression and play under control this guy would be a pro bowler. Not sure if BB would go with a guy like him as he does play out of control but the kid would be worth checking out based on ability and size. -

Brandon Jenkins is a beast. I watch him every week here in Tallahassee. And I can tell you that he was at least 280 at the Garnet and Gold Spring game and the extra weight wasn't in his gut.
He's gonna be a beast this year. Unfortunately, the Pats won't have a high enough draft pick to even smell this guy's jock strap. -

In Response to Re: ***2012 Patriots Draft Thread***:I would really like to see the Pats draft a Center this year. And not in round 5 but like in the first 3 rounds. I love Dan Koppen but its time to plan for the future of that spot. Another young WR would be nice in like round 3 or 4 but not too early unless its a very good player. I always like drafting big guys so I wont be mad if we take a few D linemen/ Olinemen But like many have said we will need to spend a high pick on a safety because as much as I like Meriweather he is gone next year. He either has another OK season or he has the best season of his career but either way he is gone. If he has a ok season he will be gone and if he blows it up this year he will want big money and he is gone. So what safety's are available? I dont care for "free" or "strong" as I know BB does not use those names to determine a safetys worth so just who are the best safetys available?
Posted by MVPkilla4life
I agree with every point and need you have outlined. I too think C, S and WR are high value targets. I listed a couple of kids I an keeping eyes on as the year progresses.
Check out my previous post..for center, I like the kid from Baylor (Philip Blake) in round 3/4. he's a big center, nasty streak, should match up well with some of the bigger NT's, as he weighs in around 315 or so.
I like MB, also am high on Ryan Broyles. I have him in my top 5 WR's in this year's draft, and a perfect Patriot target given his skill set. He's going to require a high/mid second I believe.
Safety is up for grabs. I like both kids out of Bama, although leaning toward Robert Lester given his ballhawk ability. I think he is a better cover safety than Chung, and can also be used against the run effectively like Chung.
Given it's early, this will all be readjusted as FA opens up, the year progresses, kids play, etc. But this is my short wish list now. I want to see 2 OL drafted...1 C to replace Koppen, 1 G as depth behind Mankins/Cannon. 1 WR to replace Branch/CJ. 1 Safety drafted to replace Meri, and 4-3 LB akin to Mante and use FA like this year to go grab another 4-3 DE if possible based on who's available.
I don't see too many 4-3 DE's I would take in this draft that fall out of the top 20, but still very early.
