I don't think they should draft a kicker. If Gost can be consistent in the playoffs, he stays. I think he stays either way, but if he is unnoticed in the playoffs or even kicks a game winner, it seals him for next year. Lets focus OL and DB

    [/QUOTE]

i woudl kick tires on 2 free agent kcikers and see if they can beat him out.

use 3 draft picke sto get 3 game changers at dt , de and c/g

Re: ***2013 Patriots Draft Thread V2***

a quick question...I know we had all those ridiculous thread debates a year ago about wether Brian Hoyer would bring a second or first round draft pick in a trade, but I do wonder what Ryan Mallett might bring.

I am not a fan of any of the QB's coming out this year. I think they are all in the Jimmy Clausen mode. If you were a Chiefs, Bills or Cardinals fan would you really want to hang your future on Geno Smith or Matt Barkley? I would think Mallett would be a far better bet than any the guys coming out. TB is here for another four or five so we will lose Mallet to FA before he is really of any use. KC, for example, would be far better off trading their 2nd and 4th for Mallett and keeping their top pick than taking Geno Smith. That's a no-brainer.

Keep an eye on Minnesota ex-QB Marquis Gray as a late round WR flyer. He is a great athlete and has played WR for a couple of seasons.

Also, does anyone have any idea of Collin Klien's future? I seriously doubt it is as an NFL QB. Is he a late round flyer at TE?

And I have always loved the idea of athletic college QB's converting to FS's. Maybe Taylor Martinez as a late rounder?

Right now, as it stands, I want Jesse Williams, then prayerfully S Phillip Thomas and an interior OL in third.

Is it a slam dunk that both Jake Long and Ryan Clady will be franchised? We gotta let Vollmer go with his back being bad. I'd love to sign the best free agent LT and move Solder to the right side.  OLine has to be a priority for Pats in Brady's twilight years.

i brought up the mallett possibility a week or 2 ago. id explore that.

agree i want a top o line and if vollmers back is going to be perrenial, my need a tackle in fa and c/g in draft. to go along with dt, de. fs in fa would be awesome as well. 7th or udfa outside wr who can separate.

Problem is, Mallet was a 3rd rounder, which shows you what most teams though of him coming out... and he hasn't done anything yet (also hasn't been given the opportunity, for good reason) to tell a team that he's the guy they should turn the franchise over to.  A team could do just as well spending a 2nd rounder on Landry Jones, IMO.

Martinez can fly, wonder if he'll get some consideration as a KR at the NFL level?

Phillip Thomas has had quite the statistical year (8 INT's / 12 TFL).  What stands out to me on tape is his movement ability... looks very fluid and will close../get to the LOS in a hurry... also like his size.  He flashes some very good ability as a tackler, particularly when asked to set the edge and has some good stack/shed abilty, though he needs to wrap up more consistently and can take some poor angles, but overall, looks like a very good NFL S prospect.  Might be a kid that I add to the Big 32 Board as a Day 2 kid.

I'm with you on Williams, love this kid as a Rd 1 option.

I like that they have Elam ahead of Reid as I think he's the better player.  As for the Pat's selections, I'd be pretty pissed if they spent a Rd 1 pick on Tavon Austin, passing over Barrett Jones and Jesse Williams, etc... I see a 0% chance of this happening.  I'd also be tempted to move up once spot to select Elam.  As for Rd 2, I'd be happy with Hunt selection, would also like the Rd 3 pick of Shawn Williams (would also be interested in ND S Zeke Motta in that range)... have both of them on my Big 32 board in those ranges.

that's an interesting thought MB. But if I am the new Chiefs GM I would value Mallett having studied two years with Belichick and Brady far far more than I would Geno Smith or any of the other guys coming out. You're right that Mallett was only a 3rd rounder but he dropped because of character issues and he seems to have allayed those.

UTexas has a couple kick returners in Marquise Goodwin and DJ Monroe that I hope get a FA look from the Pats. I have said this before and I will say it a thousand times more...UT Coach Mack Brown is by far the worst college coach in America. The last couple of years his record against Top Ten teams is 1-11. And he misuses and under developes players at an alarming rate. Goodwin and Monroe both have world class speed and are worth a shot.

I'd still love to steal another third round pick and take Collin Klien and just see if he could make the transition to TE or even DE. The kid is just one tough football player. Plus he's got one of those Tedy Bruschi personalities. You can't ever have to many of those.

I'm with you on Mack Brown... he's more CEO than HC, IMO, though that's an important part of the job at that level, and especially in the football crazed state of Texas.  I do like DB coach Duane Akina though... always seems to be developing NFL quality talent.

I'll have to check the two Texas kids out... I also look forward to getting Jeff Demps back next year.
