    To MB

just getting back in since   ... oh maybe screen 99 .. so i am not up to date.

i was listening to Pat Kernan on NFL radio and he spoke of Robert Woods of USC and said he was one of the better Pro-ready WRs . He said that being from the USC pro type offense he gets the defense /read route options  chracteristic of the complex ( read Pats offense). he was discussing this in regards to Heyward -Bey  free agency and was saying in the NFL ..speed is a consideration but if you cant seperate , ie route option understanding ,you are at best an average NFL WR.

How do you rate Woods? I see he is a junior. has he applied for the draft and would he be considered 3rd round  or would he last till . what is the Pats next choice 6th round?

Re: ***2013 Patriots Draft Thread V2***

    In response to seattlepat70's comment:

    Hey PE,

Nice mock. I also have been trying to do my own mock. We have similar early picks (tweaks here and there). It was fun to compare.

    1. Kansas City - OT Luke Joeckel: No need for explanation
    2. Jacksonville - DE Zeke Ansah (PE's pick Dion Jordan): I do think they pick a DE here. However, unless I missed them saying they will go 34, I believe however that Ansah is the better pick for them. He's similar in quickness, but already bigger and stronger against the run.
    3. Oakland - DE/DT Sharif Floyd: My only caveat here is that Lotulelei is a wild card.
    4. Philadelphia - QB Geno Smith: Before SFF picked Alex Smith, I did not have PHI picking a QB here. With Geno available, Kelly has an opportunity to immediately start building his offense.
    5. Detroit - DE/OLB Dion Jordan (PE's pick Eric Fisher): They lost Avril to FA and Vanden Bosch is turning 35 in November.
    6. Cleveland- CB Dee Milliner: Completely agree with your statement "Adding the top CB in the draft would go a long way to helping rebuild a D that recently added Bryant and Kruger"
    7. Arizona - OT Eric Fisher (PE's pick Ezekiel Ansah): While I agree that they also want a DE, Fisher is the bigger talent that addresses a need, if Ansah and Jordan are gone.
    8. Buffalo- OG Chance Warmack (PE's pick Cordarrelle Patterson): I did consider their need for a WR. However, I thought there are very good WRs to be had in the early second round, so perhaps wiser to pick up a stud OL who can help protect whoever ends up at the QB spot.
    9. NYJ - OLB Javis Jones: I considered Mingo for this
    10. Tenn - DT Sheldon Richardson (PE's pick Chance Warmack): Could use upgrades on both sides. I thought Richardson would make the most significant upgrade to the team.
    11. SD- OT Lane Johnson (Pe's pick Jon Cooper): I spent many weekends in Sand Diego over the last year and therefore got to see Rivers on his behind a lot. I saw on ESPN.com that he was the second most sacked QB. LT is in dire need of an upgrade. Could be a bit of a reach but SDC will not care.
    12. MIA - CB Xavier Rhodes: Yup
    13. Tampa Bay - DE Bjeorn Werner (PE's pick Star Lotulelei): I thought Bennett was a bigger loss than Miller. Losing one of their CBs I think would also be big.
    14. Carolina - WR C Patterson (PE's pick S Richardson): Richardson is gone in this mock. Rivera also has said they would give S Smith more days to rest and will be looking for Smith's successor.
    15. New Orleans - DE D Jones (PE's pick B Mingo): I missed the memo on them wanting to move to 3-4, so I had here who I thought was the best available 43 DE.
    16. St Louis - WR D Hopkins (PE's pick Tavon Austin): Had fun with St Louis. They lost Amendola and Gibson. With so many picks this year, they could afford to take risks and pick two WRs - Hopkins and Austin - in the first. I would prioritize Hopkins over Austin (personal preference)
    17. Pittsburgh - DE/OLB B Mingo (PE picks B Werner): PIT released OLB J Harrison. My guess is they pick up a possible replacement.
    18. Dallas - OG J Cooper (PE picks K Vaccaro): They are a few OL failures from being successful
    19. NYG - DE D Moore (PE picks A Ogletree): Potential replacement for Osi. Longer and just 5 lbs lighter.
    20. Chicago - OT DJ Fluker (PE picks L Johnson): Chi needs to add OL help and is thankful Johnson made it to them. They gladly take a T to add to the team now that Ogletree isn't on the board to replace Urlacher
    21. Cincy - LB A Ogletree (PE's pick D.J. Fluker): Insurance needed given struggles that Maualuga had last season
    22. Rams (From WASH) - WR T Austin (PE's pick M Elam): I don't know if they'd be willing to do a BB, given this extra pick. Together with Patterson could be one of the most dynamic young WR tandems in football
    23. Minnesota - WR K Allen: I thought they'd pick a WR. Allen is highest available on my board
    24. Indy - DT J Hankins (PE's pick M Te'o): Same context - i.e., changeover to 3-4. I thought getting a NT should be their priority. I am guessing they choose between Hankins and J Williams.
    25. Minnesota (From SEA) - DT K Short (PE: J Jenkins): For some reason I can't explain, I thought short is a better fit for how they run their D. I may be wrong, given except for AP highlights, I seldom see Vikings on TV
    26. Green Bay - CB D Trufant (PE: T Eifert): If they want to win the NFC then they have to improve their D, which looked really slow/sluggish against SFF. With Woodson at 36, Trufant could supply an initial doze of speed.
    27. Houston - DE/OLB A Okafor (PE: D Hopkins): They lost Barwin in FA. They also need a WR#2. There's depth in WR. They go for Texas product, Okafor.
    28. Denver - DE M Hunt (PE: C Carradine): They lost a very good pass rusher with question marks against the run. M Hunt could give them exactly what Dumervil did.
    29. New England - DT J Jenkins (PE: J Hankins): Choose between Jenkins and J Williams. Williams is more raw.
    30. Atlanta - DE C Carradine (PE: D Trufant): They lose Abraham. Carradine is a smart pick here. Picking up Osi or Freeney in FA could be the bridge to when Carradine gets healthy.
    31. San Fran - DT J Williams (PE: M Hunt): Reloading the interior DL
    32. Baltimore - ILB Kevin Minter: In this scenario, Teo would still be available. Based on Harbaugh's reaction to Teo's performance at the combine, it's safe to say he's not a big fan of the kid.

my only comment is you didn't put star in the first round! someone will take him, would love for it to be us.

Hey Seattle, nice mock and very realistic too. However, I agree with Nate. If Star is going to fall out of the 1st I'd take a shot at him with #29. I normally don't like taking shots at players with health issues in the 1st at all but Star is a special talent similar to Sapp and we all know how badly BB wanted to trade up and get Sapp in Clev. It's not everyday you get a chance at a top 3 talent with #29 unless his medicals come back as he'll never play in the league again then he'll fall completely out of the draft

Forgive if this has been covered in the past.  But I'd like to get some opinions of us possibly taking Kevin Minter at 29 assuming we sign a pass rusher and Edelman.  The reason I ask is Spikes is entering the final year of his contract.  He has been stout against the run but a liability in coverage.  We all know Spikes is slow as molasses in straight line speed 5.15 - forty.  Minter ran a 4.81 forty.  This added speed would help him getting to the side lines vs. all of us seeing Spikes get beat to the outside.  Minter posted a 33 inch vert, tops among ILBs.  His 119 inches in the broad jump was 2nd best.  He has 32 inch arms which are long for his 6 foot height.

I realize Fletcher will be back but how effective will he be a year removed from an ACL?  Besides, he missed 6 games in 2011 with a thumb.  To me we need to be faster at LB.  I would actually rather draft a speedy OLB and move Hightower to his more natural MLB spot but drafting a more athletic and productive Minter may have some merit.  I'm not saying this would improve us more next year vs. another position such as CB or DT (replacing Love).  Spikes hasn't been all that durable.  He has just one sack, one INT and 11 PDEF in 3 years!!  Add that to his contract being up at the end of the year, the iffy durability of Fletcher and I wonder if BB might look to draft a highly touted MLB?

My big question is, in the opinions of those on here, would Minter be an upgrade to Spikes, especially in passing situations which we're in more than 57% of the time?

I would need to check him out. I have not watched any film of his. I am hugely critical of linebackers in general and I have stated many times I do not "love" the Pats corp.

I think Mayo is decent but over rated. I was never in favor of the Spikes pick at the draft slot they took him and I was also very critical of Hightower coming out. When they took Hightower I was hoping they were going to move him to DE. I don't love him playing LB.

The last few linebackers I really liked a lot coming out were Daryl Washington, Luke Keuckly, Sean weatherspoon, Sean Lee, Jon Beason. ...and to a slightly lesser extent; Bobby Wagner and Curtis Lofton.

Would you compare Minter favorably to any of those guys I mentioned?

I have watched Minter quite a bit and he definitely looked the part this year. What I like about him to start compared to spikes, is he is an excellent run defender. So check There. He plays physical and likes contact Like spikes as well. Watching him what I noticed most is his ability to shed blocks and get to the runner. He has great sideline to sideline speed and is capable of blitzing, dropping back into coverage, but I think this area needs improvement. He kind of reminds me a little of mayo in that he is a tackling machine....however, I think he has more big play ability in him like nink. Lastly, his best games this year were against all the good teams, And he showed up big time against clemson in their bowl game...This tells me he rises to the occasion unlike Manti. Sorry MB..didn't mean to crack on your nd kid, but just my opinion.

perhaps an unpopular opinion here, but the pats may have all the DL they want right now. Armstead to me is this years 2nd round draft pick for bb. I don't know if he adds anything early in the draft At dt. Therefore, perhaps an unconventional pick, one we never saw coming like Minter makes perfect sense Given spikes last year And big ? On fletcher....

Thanks Lifer for the scouting report.  I think Minter is a possibility.  He wouldn't be my first choice as I view CB and WR as higher needs.  But if the top 3 CBs are gone and top 2 WRs are gone, I would probably put Minter higher than the #4 corner and #3 WR.  Spikes being in his final year and a rehabbing Fletcher plus the need for us to improve our speed and pass defense on the second level make Minter a reasonable choice.  And BB has been known to throw us a few curve balls on draft day. Oh, and BB does seem to like SEC players.

Based on where our BDC mock currently stands, we're guaranteed DeAndre Hopkins or Keenan Allen as there is a %0 chance that Denver takes a WR this high if at all.  I'd be psyched with this scenario... would also be interested in Tank Carradine and Sylvester Williams.

There are interesting strategies and decision points when looking at the draft.  We can see them when we mock.  The first is Geno Smith and other QBs. Greg  Cosell thinks 4 QBs will be taken in the first round.  If this happens NE will probably select at 29.  If by Tennessee there are only 2 QBs taken, NE might be a prime target for a trade out for one of those teams to select a QB late in the 1st RD.   The second is WRs.  We should have 1 of the top four there at 29.  Houston will strongly look at WR, but just like our mock we should have at least one.  Third CBs, I think Milliner, Rhodes, Trufant and Banks are the top 4.  My prediction is that they will be gone by 29. I believe if NE stays at 29 it will be a DT or WR. (this could change with FA)

yeah that approach doesn't work when you are a run by random act of god team and have 2 workhorse RB's already who run well in that type of system. That would be like taking a TE even though we have Gronk, Hern, Ballard, and Hoom. It's not just BPA but BPA for your scheme that gives greatest impact to the team overall.

    In response to PatsEng's comment:

Hey Seattle, nice mock and very realistic too. However, I agree with Nate. If Star is going to fall out of the 1st I'd take a shot at him with #29. I normally don't like taking shots at players with health issues in the 1st at all but Star is a special talent similar to Sapp and we all know how badly BB wanted to trade up and get Sapp in Clev. It's not everyday you get a chance at a top 3 talent with #29 unless his medicals come back as he'll never play in the league again then he'll fall completely out of the draft

    Thanks, Eng.

Star is a wild card. The way I look at it, teams simply need to ask two questions:

If Star wasn't someone vying for a pro-sports career, would the doctors recommend...

    1) That he lose weight?

    2) That he cuts down on his physical stress?

A yes to any of those questions undermines what makes him special as a player. He will drop.

And if the medical opinion is a unanimous no on both, then he will not be there for the Pats. What it does is perhaps make Hankins available at 29, making the Pats choose between him and Jenkins (Assuming they are on a hunt for a NT).

If opinion is mixed, my guess is he will go to a team who has extra picks to risk - Vikings, Rams, Niners. With very few picks this year, Pats could go pretty conservative on who they choose.

Taking RB's in the 1st is becoming a thing of the past. Unless there is a Adrian Peterson available. I'm not sure I would've even drafted Richardson in the 1st last year unless it was late and my top team need.

LOL. I am looking at MB's selection on the Ipad and it shows him picking Hopkins. And I came to this computer a second later and it shows S Williams. Must have been quite a dilemma for MB.
