I must say that I don't think Miami lets Nassib land with the NYJ, they (IMO) need to land this kid if they miss out on Geno Smith and EJ Manuel, IMO.

Would be interested to see if AZ has the balls to go back to the USC QB well to land their franchise kid at that position.

Wait, do you mean the Bills taking Nassib?

Oops, yes I meant Buffalo, yeah... good catch.

Nice to see some posts of the draft.  I usually get around to it a couple of weeks before the draft.  Wait for FA to settle down.  PatsEng, your draft has a nice flow to it.

Here's a question for you draftniks out there.  I was thinking that this draft may be over rated.  There's not a lot of players who really get me excited.  For instance J. Hankins is one player who I would love to see on the Pats roster but I think he'll be long gone.  When I see a guard Chance Womack ranked so high it makes me think.  Players like QB Geno Smith and DE Bjoern Werner are a couple who cause me questions as well.  Now these players are good but I don't see them as top 10 material.

This draft is strong in certain areas and certain rounds but very weak in others. For instance:

In the top 50 it's strong in OL and DL.

In the mid 2nd to mid 4th range WR's and DB's it's fairly deep in with a lot of the players in this range having similar talent level but different playing styles

Towards the back end of the draft there's a number of talented but project QB's, RB's, and TE's.

    ________________________________________

Thanks for the response PE.  I was afraid that my question would become lost in the mock draft that's going on.  Far more interesting.

My thinking is with these types of positions ranked so high and the lack of skilled positions (CB, QB, RB, LT, WR) on the high end of the 1st round doesn't make this an especially good draft.  Perhaps solid but not good.  There's only 4 OTs projected in the 1st round when there is usually five or six that you normally would see in a good draft.  There's just a lack of that 5 star talent IMO.

I've seen news on the Barrett Jones front that he will probably start on the PUP list.  With all the picks SF has I can see them using one of their higher picks for him.  They can afford the gamble and the wait time.

CB, RB, QB, WR don't have a lot of top talent but:

    • G has at least 3 top end talents 5 1st round grades
    • T has 4 top end 5-6 1st round grades
    • DT has 4 top end talent and 8 1st round grades
    • DE has 4 top end talent and 8-9 1st round grades

So plenty of top end talent along the lines in the first. For CBs and WRs though there are nearly a dozen each with back of the 1st to mid 2nd round grades which should stretch well into the 3rd. So, though not the strongest draft upfront talent wise is very strong with starting caliber players going 64 players deep along the lines, CB, and WR's positions by themselves. When you mix in the other positions you go a full 3 rounds deep with starting caliber players. It's actually a very good draft to have a number of picks between the 20's to late 3rd range.

I could see that scenario for sure. Marrone would know exactly who he is getting. That could work out very well for them

    In response to sportsbozo1's comment:

Good choice for AZ and Cincy! MB if you draft for the patriots again take Dennard Robinson if he's still availible. Since you didn't grab the WR in the first round. He's going to be taken by a team with the ability to see past his college QB days. They say he's working on playing DB and WR/KR/RB he's a freak as far as speed goes. The reason why i took Watson for the Lions is their Oline sucks and this kid has all the tools and ability that he needs to succeed in the NFL.Plus I don't expect to see any of the top tackles to be on the board past the second rd.

I'm really hesistant on Robinson. Incredible talent but nerve damage in the elbow scares me a lot. Not to mention he'd have to convert to a WR in the pro's and not many QB's have made that conversion successfully. I wouldn't touch him until the mid rounds and I don't even think most teams have him on their boards. The biggest obvious question is what will happen when he takes a hit to that elbow? Not to mention catching balls at the combine or proday, non contested, is far different then when he's on the field. That's another huge question mark. But he has the potential to be something special just not worth using a high pick for a major project with no position at this point.

I was inrested to see what my fellow draftniks (better than being a d---n beatnik) think the chances are that BB could trade down. Right now I am at about 40%. Primarily because the 4 or five best DTs could be gone along with the 3 top CBs.

Hey Low, JJD picked Richardson for TBB in the first round. Was this just overlooked, or did you really mean for them to double dip on DTs?

I gave Hopkins to CAR. They already said they want to give Smith more time to rest and they are looking for a successor to him. This despite them giving Smith a deal... last year, I believe

Depends what they did in the first round, if they get an OLB in the first they probaly won`t select Jenkins, I think they will add a receiver, to fill Mike Wallace hole, especially if they do trade Sanders to Pats, if they go Wr in the first, yes they could be interested in a guy like Jenkins

Interesting report on Mallett. If their previous demand was a 2nd rounder and now has turned into a 1st rounder I take that as there are a large number of teams inquiring about him (as demand goes up so does the price)

NFL.com reports the Patriots won't trade Ryan Mallett for less than a first-round pick, or "maybe" a second.

The Pats are remarkably adept at pumping up their backup QBs' value through the media, but it does stand to reason they'd want more than the third-round pick they spent on Mallett in any potential deal. We'd guess the "maybe" on a second-rounder is more "probably," however. New England may have lost a potential trading partner in the Browns Wednesday after they signed Jason Campbell.   Source:   Ian Rapoport on Twitter

I have always looked at it this way.... Although there is no real NFL game footage of Mallet other than preseason, Ryan Mallet beat out Hoyer for the backup job. Hoyer was just tendered at the 2nd round level this recent offseason. That would give me reason to be able to make that argument. I don't know if it's true but you could easily say the decision in camp was not even a difficult one. Mallet is vastly superior to Hoyer and how would they know any different. They have to consider it possibly true since he beat out Hoyer.

Not just that but the "only" reason I have ever heard for Mallet's slide was his interviews and perceived possibility he might be a Leaf or Marinovich drug situation waiting to happen. Other than that I always heard him considered as an actual 1st round talent. Unlike this year where you have people saying none of the QB's are probably 1st round talents but more 1st round needs.

So even if maybe unlikely, I say why not.
