    What’s goin on, boys?

Has it been (4) months already?  It feels like just yesterday, we were talking about the pros and cons of the 2013 draft, but now it’s time to get after it for the 2014 class!!!!!!!

To kick things off, below is my 2014 watch list… this isn’t my draft board (that’ll take shape as the season goes on and more info/tape becomes available), but a list of players that could be of interest to BB and Co.

This list will remain fluid and I’ll add/remove players as the season progresses.  I have few character question players (marked with a ?), but I’d have to guess that they’ll be extra careful in taking on any potential red flags (at least early in the draft), with what’s transpired over the summer.

I’ll doing as much film research as I can and will post player reviews once available.  The fun part is identifying a player that should go (IMO) much higher than currently projected/discussed.

Either way, feel free to suggest names that I may have missed… though I should note that I purposely left of a few players that I don’t see NE having a chance at (Bridgewater, Lee, etc.), though to contradict myself, I did include a couple of potential Top 10 DL (Nix/Tuitt, etc.).

Hey man! Looks like your boy Tuel  will be the first undrafted QB to start week 1 in the modern era of the NFL (or so has been reported)... no pressure, bud... it's only vs New England! ha

I am no draft expert so i guess I will just call this a bold prediction. Marcus Mariota will be the #1 pick in the draft. he will be better than Kaepernick, Luck, Wilson and RGIII.

I saw several Oregon games last year and  to go along with his physical tools the kid already had the poise and understanding of how to read and recognize defenses.

Just a BOLD prediction from a non draft expert.

BTW mbeaulieu, fantastic thread year to year  looking forward to reading all the good intel provided here.

Hey man, not a bad darkhorse pick for #1 overall (especially if tears it up and the Iggles suck enough this year)... though my money is riding on either Clowney or Bridgewater at this point.

    Re: ***2014 PATRIOTS DRAFT THREAD***

Oh I love draft talk. Given what we've seen so far this preseason I'm pretty happy with the way the young WRs look so far so not looking too deeply at WR until at least a couple weeks into the season. Even still the two names I'd keep an eye on are:

WR Brandon Coleman Rutgers and WR Jared Abbrederis Wisconsin

I think we are pretty good on OL. Maybe an eventual replacement for Mankins but I think Cannon, Wendell, Solder, and Vollmer are pretty solid moving forward. Same with LB and even DE is looking ok right now.

The positions I'm looking to improve right now are DT, CB, SS and places that could get a node early for depth are QB and TE.

For DT my favorite right now is the mammoth DT Daniel McCullers Tenn. I don't expect this kid to be a great pass rusher but he's a massive anchor on the line. You put him in the 34 or 43 and he isn't moving and no RB is running his way. If you are building rushing from the outside this guy will at least push the pocket a yard or two back just enough to make QB's uncomfortable. For me he's the DT to watch. After him there is a kid from Minn named Ra'Shede Hageman that looks pretty interesting. Overall this seems like a weaker DT class.

CB wise there are a number of interesting names. I expect CB Bradley Roby to fly up the draft boards and be a possible top 20 pick if he can repeat last years production. Justin Gilbert is a great name to watch out for out of Ok State. Very solid production the last two years. And you know how BB loves CB's who can play S so look out for Antone Exum Vir T and Tre Boston NC.

For FS's Hakeem Smith is a name that comes up if he can add some weight and Nickoe Whitley from Miss State is coming off a nice season after recoverying from ACL. Whitley might make his way to an early day 2 pick if he plays well 2 years removed from the ACL.

TE's it has to be C.J. Fiedorowicz for me. 6'7" 265 who can block and has good hands. Playing in Iowa he might be over looked but I like the way this kid plays. He has the potential to be a solid #2/3 TE with some decent speed.

Haven't looked too much into QB's yet but just got my college edition of SI so I'm going to give it a once over later

    Re: ***2014 PATRIOTS DRAFT THREAD***

I would have said Clowney but i have a feeling the Jets/cleve/oak/ Jax/Ariz may all be competing for that pick and it would be hard for those teams to pass on a QB.

Bridgewater obviously is the choice now but I was really impressed with Mariota's entire game. Once his body fills out this kid will have all the tools needed to be an NFL star.

That being said I don't follow college like the NFL so I could be dead wrong.

Haha! Yeah, no big deal. Just asking an undrafted rookie QB to beat NE in week 1. No pressure. Honestly, I bet they end up getting Manuel healthy for that game, but I would be interested to see  how Tuel could do given a chance. I always though he was a decent QB behind a terrible O-line.   If Tuel does start, Belichick will be lickin his chops.  But hey, no one expected much from Brady either before he took the field...

    Hey PE, welcome back!

Coleman is sure to be a popular track and follow name due to skill set and current school.  I also love Abbrederis.  Take a look at Josh Huff too... similar size to Boyce... good burst off the line and has some deep speed... frequently utilized as a blocker and while he could use some improvement in that area from a techniq also very adept at functioning in an extreme uptempo offense.

I'm with you on the DL's and character questions aside, Roby is a stud... might've been the best CB in last years class, IMO. I also really like Exum... looks like a high character type too (http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/26/hokies-antone-exum-personifies-the-christmas-spirit/)

CJ looks to be the bee's knees at TE this year... especially with the character questions around the other (2) big names.

    Re: ***2014 PATRIOTS DRAFT THREAD***

Ah Yes!!! The thread is here again. As always, thank you for putting it up.

The upcoming draft is very promising for teams who are looking for QBs - starters (immediate and future) and backups. It's really looking seep at QB. And your list is a good place to start.

If there is a name I would add to that list, it would be Pachall of TCU. He was away for one year, but looked good before. If he managed to stay sharp, he will be an attractive pesopect for a lot of teams.

On that list of yours, the QBs I would pick if I had to pick now, are McCarron (if the need is for a pure pocket passer) and Mariota. Mariota has all the tools to do anything the coach will want. Kelly will be all over him regardless of how the Eagles perform. However, IMO, he has shown good stuff going on above his shoulders, that he can be very successful in the pocket.

My thoughts on other positions where I feel NWE might dip their hands in.

At DT, I really like two kids - McCullers and Nix. Any team looking for a NT will be crazy not to watch him this year. He just needs to show improved ability to push the pocket, and he may be unreachable for the Pats. Nix, to me, is a very good, but more conventional DT.

At DE, I am really really sold on Tuitt. Maybe because I prefer the 34, and I believe this kid will be as good as Seymour, if not better. For some reason, I can't see you contradicting that. I am hoping one or two other DEs besides Clowney emerges as the hot thing this year, so that the Pats have a shot at Tuitt.

TE is another position, that I think will be deep. My guess is that Fiederowicz and Sefarian-Jenkins will be gone early. I think Friel will be a good pick.

At CB, I am right now sold on Roby and Verrett.

I swear by lil 10 pound bearded baby Jesus

Pat's eng are you looking over my shoulder at my mock draft board?  McCullers and Fiedorowicz are both on it as well as roby. imagine McCullers next to wilfork!

I was wondering when this thread was going to get started.  I think it good timing with the first set of games starting this weekend.  Our season is finally here.

    SUP MB!

thanks again for another year of this!  Glad to know there others out there that think, sleep, and eat this stuff up like we all do in here! lol

AJ McCarron Bama QB, (putting aside ms bama for a sec)  now eventually we will need a Brady replacement, wouldnt this kid be a 'brady-like' replacement?  He reminds me of Brady when Brady was at Michigan, just Brady had lots of qb competition there....

just curious on your thoughts or anyone elses out there?  ....

    go pats!

    Hey MB,

I'd like to get a list our prospective first round pick: Which 5'9" DB would you pick in the 6th round or later?

    Lol patsfaninba2!

This summer flew by and we are here again. I am not even sure at this point who the pats should target specifucally, but after letting Ras go and Talib on a short contract, cb once again becomes an area of need. I would also add DT to the list on defense to start.

on offense, I can see bb taking a QB at some point. I would expect one given mallets in his contract year next. OL, and perhaps WR depending on how the youngins look this year.

i think FA will be a light year next. Too many of our own to resign and extend, and big question marks on the ah contract...will the pats get cap relief?

Okay, I need to hit the books on this years college class. I will begin with your list above MB and look back over my notes from last year.

thanks for kicking it off once again. I always enjoy this thread because its without the drama...all football.

Rnd 1: DT or 34 DE (McCullers, Nix, Tuitt) or OL.

Rnd 2: CB or OL (QB if Mariota is available); go to FA for the position not picked

Rnd 3: QB (will be a QB-rich QB)

no more high picks on CB's please. By all means we can use every pick on day 3 on CB's but no more day 1 or 2 picks on CB's

Are you suggesting the Pats sign Talib to a long contract? If they let him walk after this year, we are potentially stuck with Arrington playing outside unless Ryan steps up into that role. I hate to say it but we either need to sign Talib long term or spend another high pick on a starting caliber corner. What are our options realistically?

finally, a reason to tune into the Pats board again, welcome back. now, how is Lyeria giving his opinion about Sandy Hook a character concern???

    Welcome back.

People are entitled to their opinion, I just don't want a player on the team that actually thinks that the government had some involvement in a kid shooting up an elementary school.  It's just moronic... "The parents of the kids that supposedly died in the sandy hook situation are liars."
