We picked WR Brandon Tate with #83 (North Carolina)

With the 83rd pick (19th in the 3rd Round), the Patriots select WR Brandon Tate, North Carolina.

Overview

After operating primarily as a return specialist (albeit a very good one) in his first three years at Chapel Hill, Tate really climbed boards as a receiver at the start of the 2008 season with 16 catches for 376 yards and three touchdowns in his first six games. His exploits as a receiver coincided with his continued proficiency as a return specialist, setting the career record for total return yardage (3,523 yards).

Unfortunately, he tore his right ACL and MCL in October, cutting his magical senior year short. He still earned honorable mention All-ACC as a returner despite missing more than half the season. If his knee is healthy come draft day, Tate could be one of three Tar Heel receivers earning draft selections in 2009 along with Hakeem Nicks and Brooks Foster. Had an arm span of 30 3/4 inches and a hand span of 9 1/4 inches at the combine.

Analysis

Positives: Long, lean build. Good quickness, size and hand strength to get off the line of scrimmage against press coverage. Emerging route-runner with the quick feet and balance to ultimately be quite good in this area. More quick than fast, though he has good acceleration. Elusive in the open field and has the vision to set up his blocks and break into the open field. Soft hands. Good body control and flexibility to contort his body for the poorly thrown pass. Can extend to make the diving grab. Good height and long arms and uses the combination well to high-point passes over smaller cornerbacks. Excellent returner with NFL ability for punt and kickoff returns.

Negatives: Torn ACL and MCL in October means he may not be able to answer questions about his straight-line speed until after the draft. Primarily a return specialist until flashing as a receiver as a senior. A bit raw as a route-runner. Relies on his athletic ability in this area, rather than precise footwork. Lets too many passes get into his pads.

And that is fine with ME! In Bill We Trust!

By far, the most underrated aspect of managing a football team is the Salary Cap, the constraints of which force all teams to plan a good 3 to 5 years ahead. While that may seem ridiculous ~ and of course it IS ~ the ones who fail to do so ~ and that's at least 25 of the 32 teams, frankly! ~ continually and constantly watch, helplessly, as their teams get torn apart, as they are forced to let more of their Core leave than they can possibly afford.

The rest of the league was cutting the distance between them and Coach Bill, ere the last 4 years...

But Coach Bill is pulling away, surging, once again, and doing so right before our very eyes...VERY reminiscent of Bill Walsh and the Miners of the latter 80's.

In short, Coach Bill wasn't feeling the love for Maualuga, Matthews, et cetera...or any of the rest of the Top 32. He just didn't see them as being worth investing a Gold Chip Pick in...or, more importantly, in investing precious Salary Cap Room in.

Now, we've got 4 2nd Round Picks, and 4 3rd Round Picks.

That...is INSANE.

Had the Salary Cap not forced us ~ even with the truly MAGNIFICENT management of Coach Bill and Counselor Pioli, ere the last 9 years ~ to strip down our Reserves to vulnerable levels, we wouldn't've bottomed out at Running Back in 2005, at Wide Receivers in 2006, at LineBackers in 2007, and at QuarterBacks in 2008.

We would've, most likely, won an additional 4 Super Bowls...and been working on our 7th consecutive, right now.

The Salary Cap is EVIL.

Tate, from Burlington, was being touted for selection between the second and fourth rounds of this weekend’s NFL draft. But that status could be affected if the FoxSports.com report is true. Two sources revealed to FoxSports.com the results of the test, which were given to NFL teams this week.

Joel Segal, Tate’s agent, nor Greg Barnett, who Segal referred media to for interview requests, did not return calls to The Fayetteville Observer.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Tate finished as the NCAA career leader in combined kick return yardage with 3,523 yards. He is the Atlantic Coast Conference career leader in kickoff returns (109) and kickoff return yardage (2,688).

As a senior in 2008, Tate averaged 163.7 all-purpose yards per game until suffering tears in the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee against Notre Dame. He missed the final seven games of the season.

Also named in the FoxSports.com story was Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin. Harvin elected to leave the Gators after his junior season for the NFL. He finished his college career with 133 catches for 1,929 yards and 13 touchdowns. He and Tate were the biggest names among those who failed the combine drug tests, a number which the FoxSports.com report said was fewer than a dozen.

Players who fail the combine drug tests could be required to enter the NFL’s substance-abuse program.

Before the test results became official, Harvin was considered a potential first-round pick after leaving the University of Florida following his junior season. Tate was projected as a first or second rounder after a solid college career at North Carolina.
