A WR idea..don't kill me please........

Realistically speaking our wr's are solid but we are missing a stretch the field wr. Moss and Fitzgerald are not an option REALISTICALLY!! I keep having a picture in my mind of Steve Smith running a deep go and Brady firing to him............I think Steve Smith will get traded this off season and I hope its to Foxboro...........Commence the rock throwing........

Had some injury history, but I too would be down for a 4th rounder or later.  At that point there is no real risk.

I think it's a good idea. the only issue is that they are crowded at WR with smaller, quicker guys and one of them will probably have to go if they add Smith.

Smith would probably do backflips to go on a good team.

Steve Smith could work. But NE only trades low picks. They won't give up real scratch for a guy like that.

Who knows about Smith , but this team needs help at WR. Ive been saying this since Moss left. Welker lived off him , teams never used to pay attention to him. They would stick there 3rd DB on him and give him anything underneath. Not so easy when teams actually game plan around you. We need a Nicks , Q , Austin ... a guy that can stretch the field and run 12 yds , put his foot in the dirt and get a first down when needed. Pats have the picks to really make some moves , trade , draft ( moving up/down ) and we should do something. This team has some big needs , that if go un-checked , we'll keep getting the same results. DE , OLB , S , WR , CB can all be upgraded and most will be addressed in some shape or form by the end of the draft.

I'd offer our lower 3rd. he is a good WR who would definiately benefit from a good QB throwing the rock to him.

    Wozzy,
Pats are not loaded at WR. Branch has proven time and time again that he cannot last a full season. Welker is coming on his FA year. Edelman c/b a fine #3/4. Tate and Price remain to be seen, especially if there is no football this summer. They both need loads of practice time and need to gain Brady's confidence in the offseason work.
The issue is awaiting the final cap number. Seemingly, Mankins, Light and a player of Smith's salary would not fit into how the Pats allocate cap space.
Personally, I see DL and OL AND WR as more need spots than OLB.
I dolike the concept of drafting OL and DL players, and signing FA's for WR and RB.

We get a good running game and I think we're loaded at WR too. If the D won't respect our run then they do what the Jests did, rush 2 or 3 and cover with 6 or 7. You think if we still had a healthy Cory Dillon the Jests would have only rushed 2 guys? They would have had 7 or 8 in the box.

I'd take a RB end of 3 or later. I hope the only pick in the first 6 thats not on both  lines is OLB.

I have always been a Steve Smith fan.  He is a tough SOB and I think he would thrive here.  But as others say, the asking price, assuming he's even available, is likely prohibitive.

When you have invested in young wide receivers with relatively high draft picks like Tate and Price, you see what they can do before burying them on the depth chart.  This will be a big year for both, and while a veteran wide receiver could help, they really need to let those guys get on the field and develop.

I suggested at the beginning of last year that the Patriots should try to make a trade for Smith. He's a nasty passionate football player who fights for the ball. Kind of a Hines Ward type. I think he'd be great on this team.

What baggage, no more than Moss and that turned out pretty good. He actually is a sweetheart of a guy but nasty on the field. ( altho he does like to punch out teamates)

Exact baggage I meant plus I could've sworn he was arrested for something as well. With alot of young guys on the team I wouldn't want him here setting a bad example. Its not like back when they brought in Dillion and Moss when they had lots of veteran leaders on the team already. If that was the case and we had the Bruschi, Harrison, Troy Brown ect. then I would say sure why not

point taken, i'd just like to see a receiver that would get in the face of the opposition a little more..  I like a nasty streak in a football player. The Patriots need a Rodney, right now. I don't know maybe the Patriots are a finesse team . But I don't think that's going to cut it with defenses like the Jets and Ravens.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: A WR idea..don't kill me please........ : That's part of the problem. The Pats have become the equivalent of the 2004 Colts, and 2001 Rams. They're the high flying offense that's expected to win the game but keeps getting punched in the mouth and shutdown by a good defense. They need to build off of the capabilities they currently have with a great offense but also be able to win a nasty game with a fearsome defense and commitment to the running game. Playoff games are very rarely shootouts, and how often have the Pats won an ugly game in recent years?  It should say something that since 2001 the Pats have only won one playoff game when allowing more than 28 points. That was the 03 Super Bowl vs. Carolina (29). If you look at the Jets game, they were being dared to run in the first half but stubbornly relied on the passing game to a fault even when the Jets were dropping 8 or 9 into coverage. They could have softened that Defense with BJGE up the middle and Woody to the edges but they didn't move to that style of play calling until it was far too late.

A Voice of reason ! - we have more than enough offense.  28 points against is in general, a recipe for a lost cause.  our high flying offense has gotten us where since 16 - 0 in a the regular seaon, 2007 ? Yeah, a victory over an over matched Jacksonville, we were lucky that LT, Gates and Rivers were all walking wounded for San Diego, then an 0 - 3 slide.  Two of those, woeful one and done season enders.   another WR is next to Punter in magnitude of importance in this coming off season of draft, trade and free agency.

Re: A WR idea..don't kill me please........

Here's an idea that won't sit well with the majority here:  TRADE WELKER.

He's due for FA after next year and with the new CBA, it's unlikely we'll be able to afford him - at least not while we presumably have signed Mankins long term by then.

His skill set is similar to Edelman and if we could retain Faulk for another year (at least) in addition to our TEs, we'd have a number of short yardage specialists to replace his skillset.

There's never been a better time to trade him in exchange for a high draft pick (high 2nd perhaps) which we can then use to package for a high 1st round this year and draft a stud OLB/DE - a position we need more than WR.

    Just a thought.
