    Aaron Schobel

Ok, so this guy is 33 and always played in a 4-3, but if Buffalo tells him they do not want him back because they have already moved on, anyone like him coming in for a look at RDE?

It would appear unlikely based upon the number of bodies they have on the DL right now, but I always liked his motor and production.

Yup..As long as he plays as good this year as he did last year bring him in. The guys a freak and I'm a big fan of freaks. Belichick would find a roster spot for him. He loves veteran all pro guys.

I agree, obviously. That's why I started this thread. hehe

I can just see him at the very least being a 3rd down Jarvis Green type on obvious passing situations or being used on one end in a 4-3, which I still feel BB is going to unload more of this year.

The guy has 78 career sacks and he'll be 33 in Sept.  Nice career and you give him a carrot for one last go of it here?

I can see it being a very good move.  I really hope Buffalo tells him they have moved on.

Wait a minute since when does Buffalo play the 3-4?  I thought Schobel was a 4-3 end, don't see how he could play RDE in our 3-4.

Yup, whoops. Typo up top on my part. That's why I said he'd be mroe of a Jarvis Green type as a 3-4 DE sub rusher or 4-3 DE subpackage player here.

    Just fixed it.

Still would really like the move to bring him in for straight sack attempts on 3rd and 7s.

He is but when your that good they can find a place where you can have and impact. They wouldn't have to throw any giant money at him and he's a menace in passing situations.

Not so sure it would be about money. Maybe.  He is owed 8 million guaranteed and they haven't even signed Spiller who will command a huge contract as the first RB taken in the draft.

Second, Buffalo is struggling to sell tickets and with their finances in general. Their stadium is old, seats aren't selling there anymore and it's a pretty depressed area as is Jacksonville.

Last, Marshawn Lynch is on the block for the same reason$.

If Schobel takes a paycut to stay with Buffalo, I can see it. If he retires, what is the rule?

Can he retire and then sign with another team in the same month?

I don't know what the exact rule is but if he retires he is still forever the property of the Bills even if he comes back 2 years down the road. We have bargaining chips though and could rework his deal a little. I actually thought you were talking about next year, I didn't know this was happening this year. No cap this  year though, if it's just a 1 year thing.

    Re: Aaron Schoebel

Yes, but now he is chirping up acting like he wants to play. So, he either has to announce the retirement or Buffalo has to cut him if he shows he wants to play, or they keep him.

    See what I am saying?

Do you really expect him to stand up and play OLB in a 3-4 at 33 for 1 year on a 5-11 or 6-10 last place team?

If he acts like he wants to play, he might be cut.    New coaching staff, new 3-4, Spiller not signed, Lynch being paid big bucks.

    Something has to give.

It almost appears like he does want to play, but he also wants Buffalo to cut him. This is how it reads to me.

He would have already announced the retirement if it was truly about needing to be around his family, so why hasn't he?

It sounds like he wants to play, but that might force Buffalo to cut him because of the 8 million he'd be due:

    That's what I said.  DE.

I would not be surprised at all if part of their reason to go 3-4 DE this year was because of his idea to retire.

8 million for a guy to learn a new position at OLB?  I just don't see why playing one more year at a new position for him would make sense. That's why it sort of smells like him chirping up is a way to show he wants to play, forcing their hand, knowing they can't pay him 8 mil there.

I also didn't see them playing him at DE there based on who they have there now.

    I don't know . It's just something to watch.

If he says he wants to play and they end up cutting him, he would be very, very intriguing in a mix here at RDE.

When a player gets cut the money is gone too.  He wouldn't be 8 million per if he got cut and played elsewhere.

A cut player's deal does not carry over to another team.

The Texans would be a good option, or Dallas, obviously.

If you were at the end of your career and Bill Belichick called you, after years of playing against him, I would imagine you'd have to consider it.

Schobel was going to be asked to switch from DE to OLB in Buffalo's new 3-4 defense. This switch may have played a part in his reluctance to come to camp...along with playing for one of the worst teams in the NFL...that seems to be in a perpetual rebuilding mode.

The Pats struck out with Derrick Burgess last year...and it cost them 3rd and 5th round picks in the 2010 draft. Would they be willing to offer up a 6th rounder for Schobel? Will Buffalo be willing to trade within the division? Should the Pats wait until he's released, before knocking on his door? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/02/bills-decide-to-divorce-aaron-schobel/

Report: Schobel expects release, wants to talk to other teams

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 2, 2010 12:23 PM ET

We noted just an hour ago that the Bills have decided to move on from Aaron Schobel, and said how difficult it will be to trade him.

    They aren't going to try.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora says Schobel was informed the Bills will cut him.  More importantly, Schobel is "very much interested" in talking to other teams.  (So basically he wanted out of Buffalo and got what he wanted.)

There should be a healthy market for Schobel's services, even this late in the offseason.  Here are some teams that would make sense on paper.  (Speculation warning.  We're just throwing stuff against the wall here.)

    * The New England Patriots: Changing schems could make this an awkward fit, but the Patriots desperately need a pass rusher.  No player has sacked Tom Brady more times and Bill Belichick loves getting guys that have hurt his team.

    * The Houston Texans: Schobel lives nearby and they could use another pass rusher. Some teams that make sense on paper.

    * Tennessee Titans: They like veterans  and could use an end.

    * Atlanta Falcons: Another team short at defensive end.  Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff say Schobel plenty in the AFC East.

Unless Aaron Schobel really wants to play for Houston, (which there is speculation he might, considering he lives near that area), then I fully expect Bill Belichick & CO. to contact Schobel and ask for his services once he is officially cut loose from Buffalo. This guy could very easily be the best pass rushing OLB in the NFL next season. He may not be a coverage guy, but if you can get him in here to play the edge, you'll have yourself a great presence to work with. I'm praying he comes to New England.

That would mean he faked interest in returning knowing they would release him at 8 million, if that is true.

Also, the story about his family looking for places to rent in Buffalo this year would not be true.

I am not sure if I buy that it is the 3-4 thing that had him running away. I think it has more to do with being sick and tired of playing for nothing.

If I am BB, I swoop in here with a hard sales pitch and get it done.

No doubt. Especially considering Belichicks pension for going after guys who played well against his teams. Welker/Morris. Shoebel has been one of Brady's worst nightmares his entire career. I would take him for his pass rush over Ogunleye. Willie n Vrabel were never great in coverage but that can be disguised to an extent. Not suggesting he would be more then a situational player but that is what we run, Sub Packages!

This has me giddy, but I seriously feel like Houston has the edge here.    At worst, he's subpackage like you said, but what if he was ok at edge setting and could play more?

Even if NE offered more money, Schobel may just feel like being close to home and having a crack at the AFC South title, and that being enough. Not to mention, he'd play more in a straight 4-3.

BB would need to put the hard sell on.  I bet this will happen quickly, too.

We'll either hear of Houston signing him by tomorrow or we'll hear Schobel is on his way here.

I can't see too many other teams bidding.

    Re: Aaron Schoebel

    One more thing of interest:

I am not sure how how up to date this is, but Houston sits at 108 million dollars in payroll, NE at 92 million.

A lot of teams aren't making a ton of money in this economy and many will want to clip payroll if they can before going into a possible lockout.

So, this will not be about money for Schobel.  If NE calls, and if they don't get him, it won';t be about money.

NE has a need, a more glaring need than Houston.  BB needs to pull out all the stops and dangle the carrot for Schobel.

sign him he was a serious threat to the health of brady for the past few years, and had quite a few sacks last year on the bills defense. I could see him with at least 6 sacks if he played for us, being used in sub packages.  The addition of schoebel would make me feel much more confident in our pass rush. Plus seeing the look on the face of my roommate (who is a bills fan) when schoebel sacks their QB this year would be priceless.

Buddy nixes talk of releasing Schobel

Aaron Schobel may want to talk to other teams as a free agent, but the Bills won't let him.

Following a report that said Schobel learned he would be released, Bills G.M. Buddy Nix says Schobel isn't going anywhere for free.

"He will remain on our Reserve/Did Not Report list until he makes a decision about what he wants to do, whether it's retire or if he might want to play somewhere else," said Nix.

Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com says it's clear the team won't release Schobel and that the only options for the defensive end is retirement or a trade.

Schobel insists he's not sure if he wants to play again, and will take the next two weeks to decide. It can't help matters that he would have to potentially wait out a sticky trade process.  It's unlikely any team will want to take on his present contract.

Still Schobel says he's relieved the Bills made up his mind for him.

"I kept changing my mind. This makes it easier," he said

Sorry but Scobel isn't going to play DE in a 3-4 weighing 240 something pounds. If he switched to a 3-4 it would be as an OLB. The question is can he be talked into doing that for a better team than the Bills since he expressed a lack of interest in doing it in Buffalo.

He could be used as a pass rush specialist as a DE in a 4-3 set that the Patriots sometimes go to.... But if you are going to think along those lines, Ogunleye is actually rated higher as a 4-3 DE Pass Rush Specialist according to Pro Football Focus and the Patriots appear to be passing on him, at least at this time.
