Big AL, Vince, Ellis and Carter, this front 4 might rival any legendary front 4 like the Fearsome Foursome. Steel Curtain and other great DL's of the past. Big Al and Vince may have to be double teamed, lots of sacks by the DE's and LB's. Kudos to BB et al for assembling a deep and talented DL.

Re: Andre Carter is a patriot!!!!!!!

Most NFL teams bring a prospect in for the entire training camp.  Not the Patriots.  The training camp limit may be 90, but the Patriots bring in 100 or 110.  They regularly cut people 3 days into camp or 1 week into camp, as soon as they can be pretty sure that the guy just doesn't have the moxie.  Example:  their fourth string quarterback from last year's practice squad proved unequivocally that he hadn't grown much in the offseason, and Ryan Mallet proved that he's the real deal.  So the Patriots tried this QB out on special teams for exactly one day, no dice, and then shot him out the torpedo tubes the next day.  Then they sign somebody else to test the next guy out on-field, and another JAG, and another.  Try enough guys and you'll come up with a Jabar Gaffney or two.

I don't really know if Andre Carter is still the player he was, but he's worth a minimium of one week of camp to find out.  Maybe he'll be cut again, maybe he'll stick.  At the very least he'll learn the basic half of the Patriots playbook and he'll be able to come in during midseason.  That's the other reason for having 110 players, not 90, in camp -- more types of players on speed-dial for when the injury bug hits hard.

[QUOTE]on cunningham, looks like so-so. i dotn knwo what it  will take for him to show that he could be something. he's got a year to show it. urban meyer may have liked cunningham better than dunlap, but he hasnt showed us too much yet.

The Patriots defense was second in the NFL in generating interceptions.  I don't think that the defense had a ball-hawking backfield, so it must have been the pressures.  That's Cunningham's department.  Sacks are overrated, but short fields from interceptions and strips/recoveries are something that Tom Brady can take to the bank if the defense hasn't gone to the bank already.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Andre Carter is a patriot!!!!!!! : I don't know. Pass rushing ability usually jumps out early. I was hoping he would be great in camp, and show some development, but every report I have read shows that he looks the worst among the pass rushers out there, especially in one-on-ones, where he hasn't been winning any matchups. IT is early in his career, but what I've seen so far doesn't inspire tons of confidence. Let's hope he can take a leap forward this summer.

Ability jumps out? Or production? If it's ability, then I'd probably agree and I think Cunningham has shown ability. When he was on the field last year, I thought he was one of our better pressure players we had...did he actually get sacks and production? No. I think that type of rookie year is not too uncommon for "pass rushers". McGinnest (who was chosen 4th overall) had like 4 sacks his rookie year and had many low sack years. Now I should say I was not a Cunningham fan when they drafted him, I thought he was too small and just seemed to fly right up the field, taking himself out of the play. For some reason he looked much bigger to me on the field last year and seemed to play pretty smart for a rookie. I think a lot of these pass rushers blossom later (2-3 years) into their careers, after they get some counter moves and playing time. Almost every pass rusher out there has an uneven/up and down - stat wise - career...4 sacks one year, 10 the next, 8, 2, 12, etc. I like that they got Carter, there's no doubt that he is a true nfl pass rusher. I'm very surprised at the sack production Ellis has had as well, his numbers say "pass rusher"; at 34 though that's far from a sure thing any longer...but they both are good signings.

Cant hurt to have to 22 defensive lineman in camp...just know that we only keep 8-10 of them...

I am reallty starting to believe this 4-3 talk now.  It just makes more sense, because we tried alot of lineman out playing the 3-4 last year w/ mixed results and now w/ guys like Carter, Haynesworth, Anderson, etc...all seem suited to play 4-3..but Billy really likes his nickel defense, beczause its a passing league..so I wont say it will be traditional 4-3, but a hybrid nickel package with an extra safety and 2 backers standing up, and one or two with their hands down...  alot of flexibility...

You've got to be kidding me?! You think our interceptions last year were generated by our pressure? Do you think we'd be spending the first three weeks of camp bringing in pass rushers and dumping front 7 players if we were so good at generating pressures? Guess how many times Mark Sanchez was sacked or even hit in our playoff loss? ZERO!! We never even hit him once! Not once! Never mind get within sacking distance. You can't get much worse than that, unless they start having statistics for players getting within 3 yards of the opposing qb...we might win that catergory. We had a ton of guys that just got locked up about 9 feet from the qb, while the qb was allowed to complet all those 3rd and whatevers. We were the worst third down defense team in the league (you can't get any worse than worst). I'm not saying Cunningham is going to be a dog, but don't confuse our interceptions...to pressure.

Just a little Tidbit because I see so much 3-4 / 4-3 talk. Zolak just quoted a tweet from Shalise Manza Young as saying that Carter was told he'd be playing DE on a 4 man front. Now while I understand that he could just be used as a situational pass russer when we line up 4-3 or Nickle I thought that was a very interesting statement.

Carter will be a situational pass rusher, he isn't exactly young and is limited, he's not a true end coming in under 260 pounds but he brings an explosive first step. Our defense will be scary good considering how much competition we're bringing into camp...

AGREE !!!!  i am also very exited about this team...

On D, Brandon Spikes is also making a big impact in camp, imagine a dominant 4 front with Vince, Al, Shaun & Cunningham / Carter  and Mayo and spikes behind them... uffffffff    showtime !

[QUOTE]I haven't been this excited about a team since we were going into 2007. While he is not exactly young, keep in mind that we already have a lot of young guys and they need some veterans to complement them. Youth is good but experience is also essential. A lot of players that could make a big difference to the defence: Ellis, Carter, Haynseworth, Bodden. Plus the offense should be better as well with the new RBs, Gronk reportedely beasting it up in camp, and Taylor Price looking like he could emerge as a quality WR. Plus the addition of Ocho and Welker being another year removed from knee surgery. I think this is the year of the 4th Lombardi.
