    Another rookie played well

Sergio Brown made some plays today and didn't look lost. Another player in this excellent rookie class.

He's a Notre Dame graduate so he has smarts, peoples' hair is easy to overlook...we're all different.

Agreed.  Sergio played a darn good game. Sure tackler and played hard. A whale of 1st game for a UFA who was not even on th eroster last week. Looks like a keeper.

He's got really nice size, our only DB that's +6ft.

I thought he played well, though he seems a bit immature, almost like merriman back when merriman was good.  I'll write that off to it being his first game.  I thought Deaderick played well today too.

Sergio Brown can tackle.  I like the kid and he played great for his first game.  Future looks bright.

Rookie Brown with big play on D

    October, 24, 2010
SAN DIEGO -- On the surface, it wouldn’t seem to be the matchup that the Patriots wanted: rookie safety Sergio Brown on Chargers All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates.

That’s how it unfolded on a crucial play on the Chargers’ final drive.

With the Patriots’ defense looking to hold on to a 23-20 lead, San Diego had the ball on the New England 35. It was third-and-10 with 1:14 remaining.

Quarterback Philip Rivers found tight end Antonio Gates short to his right, and Brown wrapped him up for the tackle, two yards short of the first-down marker.

    Huge play.

The Chargers had to settle for a field goal, and they ended up self-destructing.

As for Brown, he had been on the Patriots’ practice squad for the first six weeks of the season and was promoted to the active roster this past Saturday.

“I really couldn’t [write a better script],” he said after the game. “It felt wonderful. They taught me how to play defense and I was just doing what I was supposed to do -- being in the right position at the right time.”

Brown was active for the game because veteran Jarrad Page is sidelined with a calf injury, and his primary contributions were expected to come on special teams. But when safety Patrick Chung was knocked out of the game with a knee injury in the first half, Brown came on the field in defensive sub packages.

The big tackle on Gates came with the Patriots in their dime package (six defensive backs).

“I was just ready for any opportunity to come up,” said the former Notre Dame defender. “Once it came up, I was just playing hard, the only way I know how to play.”

Teammates lauded Brown's performance, as did the coaches.

“The staff does an excellent job as far as grooming talent and getting guys ready to play,” linebacker Jerod Mayo said. “Everybody on the practice squad, they know at any given time their number might be called to play. He came up and played well.”

A part of the low pass d rating is the prevent d with leads, but I get your point.

In Response to Re: Another rookie played well:
[QUOTE]I think you're overhyping guys left and right. Keep in mind that this collection of players is 29th out of 32 teams in pass defense. Reading some player "analysis" on here you'd think we have a pro-bowl HOFer at every position on defense. I repeat:  Only 3 teams in the entire NFL are worse at pass defense than we are. Yes, I hope we get better some day, but reality check please.

Stats are for losers.... all that matters is points and ultimately wins and losses.  The pats are giving up yards and 3rd down conversions, but not alot of points.... Reminds me of 2000 season.....  and the D is getting better every week.... The only time that SD moved the ball effecitvely is in 2nd half when the pats were playing prevent D.  Without the onside kick, this would not have even been close....
