Anthony Gonzalez - why the quick pickup of him?

The guy has blown out both knees. Lengthy injury history. Why were we so quick to pick him up? surely there are better mid-tier candidates available.

Virtually no risk with the contract they gave him. Potentially high reward, he was thought highly enough of to be a 1st round pick for a perennial playoff contender. Why not see what he can bring?

I'm under the impression he came super cheap

Leverage with WW  (let's not forget this is a business for the Pats)

Depth Move. The Patriots are pretty much set at WR after they signed lloyd. Good to have him if anyone goes down, knowing the Pats they will find a role for him.

And like Taco said, low risk.

Re: Anthony Gonzalez - why the quick pickup of him?

The top 4 receiving options next season (in no particular order) are Welker, Lloyd, Gronk and Hernandez.  Anyone else that comes to camp is competing for the 5th spot at best.  In this situation you want to bring in guys with the most upside because if they don't pan out it really isn't a big deal.  Gonzalez is a former first round pick who used to have almost elite speed.  The real question is why not take a chance on this guy?

Leverage for the Welker situation in case Welker holds out.  Between Edelman and Gonzalez, BB is using 2 birds with one stone.

have to assume that elite speed has been slowed by the two knee surgeries...seems like money would have been better spent on defense......and just pick up the 5th receiver via draft

Is Gonzalez even getting paid enough to count against the cap?  The Pats at this point do not have low round picks, but even if they did why not spend those on D instead?

Your characterization of Gonzalez as mid-tier is incorrect. Try bargain basement.

I think he means mid-tier level when healthy, which is essentially true.

There's a dozen guys that will be signed this off season that will never see the opening day roster, he's probably one of them. Gonzalez is a low price, low risk guy that I'm sure is part of the insurance plan that will be in place if Welker holds out or becomes a distraction.

Re: Anthony Gonzalez - why the quick pickup of him?

He's not protection against any Welker decision,he doesn't play the slot he's a WR X or Y. When was the last time anyone clocked him to see what his speed is? He's in his second year of rehab for a torn ACL and for those of you who have never torn your ACL this is when you actually find out how well your rehab went. If he is healthy this is a great move.

BB is trying to corner the market on under-sized scrappers.

Then he can deal them to other teams on his terms
