    Armstead placed on NFI list

Patriots | Armond Armstead on NFI list

Posted 53 mins ago via footballguys

The New England Patriots placed DT Armond Armstead (heart) on the non-football illness list Monday, July 22.

    -----------------

So we pretty much knew that Gronk, Edelman and Ballard would be on the active/PUP list before camp is stated but it is a surprise about Armstead.

I'm expecting big things from Armstead, this isn't a good sign for him.

This may be simply a precaution going into camp or there may be more to it.  We'll see.

The PUP list is semantics until August 31st. As stated time will tell. He did actually play in Canada last year.

I said not to expect too much from the guy but I at least expected him to play. Yep, glad we have such a deep DT core and spent that extra $5mil in cap space we can't carry over on the first tier FA's so this wouldn't happen...

Well that's just perfect. I honestly can't believe how this off season went. I sat there and watched free agent defensive lineman, after free agent go to other teams...I watched them all get taken off the board during the draft. Armstead was supposed to be our guy. This sucks.

Ahhhhhh...now we know where some of that $5 Mill. in cap space they can't carry forward will go...this is not a good sign, and that's not gloom and doom, it's  pretty accurate...it's just not what they need right now, most on these threads anticipated him being a regular part of the interior D line rotation....

Well it's a little late now, all the good players have been gobbled up. Now all we can hope for is guys that get released and for all the gloom and doom regarding salary cap space around the league? Everyone has got their cap pretty much under control at this point - guys getting released will be because they aren't very good. Should of spent it when we had the chance.

I wouldn't get alarmed by this yet.  I believe you can't put a player on the PUP list once he's practiced at all, so it makes sense to start players with any question mark no matter how minor on the PUP.  Once the trainers and medical staff are okay with the player's condition, you take him off.  But if you let him practice, you can never put him on the list, so teams play it safe.

The NFI list means he is required to sit out at least the first 6 weeks of the season.

This is true but as Pezz pointed out Armstead is on the NFI not the PuP

Horrendous news.   There's no positive way to spin it.  A guy finishes the prior season healthy - you expect him to make it to camp healthy.

Who would have imagined he'd beat Ras-I to the list?

    Non-Football Injury (NFI) List

The NFL has a second injury list that is similar to the PUP list, but is based on different timing of injuries. The Non-Football Injury list has rules that closely adhere to those in the Active/PUP and Reserve/PUP, but it is classified differently. The most obvious inclusion would be injuries suffered off the football field (game AND practice fields). If a player gets hurt away from team activities, the team would be eligible to place him on the NFI list.

just an example of someone put on this list..................

Dion Jordan's stay on the non-football injury list was a brief one.

The Miami Dolphins rookie defensive end was seen in pads prior to Tuesday's practice, and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that Jordan has been activated for duty. The former University of Oregon pass rusher was expected to miss up to two weeks of training camp because of the surgically repaired shoulder he's nursed all offseason.

Had Jordan not been activated before Miami's final roster cuts, he would have remained shelved for the first six weeks of the regular season.

I believe the correct situation is that a player on the list must sit out if he is still on the list at final cut down.

Armstead was at OTA's with the other l-men. They didnt do much with out pads on, but he was there. My understanding is that Armstead is still seeing a specialist at regular intervals. Perhaps he needs another visit for a final ok to proceed during camp?

I wouldn't panic yet, but Mr Fortson, please step up!

well, I think that's been clarified.

If he's not removed from the list prior to the final roster cut, it would.

Could be it's just BB covering his behind.  Could mean more.  We just don't know.

Regardless, a heart issue is reason for concern., especially if they are taking precautions.

Agreed. They've been raving about him all offseason. Every team has a list of guys they went to bring along slowly for whatever reason. BB is usually really good at gauging a player's timetable.

Can you provide proof of these "ravings", because I can't recall even one instance of him being mentioned?

I guess there are reasons why players don't get drafted or end up playing in the CFL and not the NFL.  I'm tired of taking chances on guys hoping they pay off.  The Pats passed on many good players this off season, BB thinking outside the box a little too much, imo.  This gets frustrating after a while.

Re: Armstead placed on NFI list

I dont mind taking a flier on a guy or thinking outside the box. You never know what will happen. But lets face it, Lovie and Deadrick are gone, and Armstead is the 3rd guy in the DT rotational plan, along with I assume Fortson 4th up. If Armstead for some reason cant go, I would think that a major set back....

Lets not forget, the Pats moved BACK in the draft with DT's available, and at that time many here thought Armstead was worthy of a #1 grade....

I cannot imagine that this was a planned situation...it will be asked in the presser, but BB will of course say he is here to coach the players that will be on the field....infuriating for those of us who care and want to know...

It is a litte more than semantics. It means they will not be practicing with the team when camp starts. They can attend meetings and use the training facilities, but in order to participate on the practice field with the team, they need to come of any of these lists.

Right, so...?  SOme extra work for a week with the trainers with guys they know are going to make the team, get an extra week of rest to deal with whatever it is and then they can come off when ready to go.  Outside of Ballard and developing a rapport with Brady, Gronk and Edelman should be locks.  I wouldn't even look to Gronk until the week before the regular season or a regular seasons PUP to start the year.

I remember Moss missing the last week of camp and all of preaseason because he tweaked his hammy.

BB is really good at balancing these things. I wouldn't read too much into it.

The chips will fall where they fall. Every team handles their players differently. Some believe in dinged up players practicing on day 1, some are more conservative in managing any lingering rehab based issues.

Gronk is not a surprise, nor is Ballard or an Edelman, necessarily.  If all healthy come end of August, they will make the team and be activated.

Besides, a lot of the new guys could use the reps. Also, some guys like Connolly, MCourty, Nick McDonald have been milked along so far due to offseason tune ups with surgery and aren't on the list.

    [/QUOTE]

I stated Ballard was limping at OTS's and you clearly called me a liar and a troll...now you are saying that Ballard on the PUP is not a surprise?

You were just as "giddy" over the Armstead signing....yet him on the NFI is a shocker to everyone here...

It is a riot that you call think of yourself as some sort of expert, yet have never seen a practice or a live game, and continuously speak out of both sides of your mouth....you cannot call someone a liar when they say Ballard is limping, and then turn around and say it is no surprise he is on the PUP. I would say you lose all credibility, but you dont have any to begin with...so I guess it is simply you being the liar and troll
