Bottom line...

Bottom line, this draft has been a disaster. First, you start with the premise that the offense was perhaps the best in the NFL last year, and the D was one of the worst. Then, for context, you add the fact that they have perhaps the greatest QB in NFL history with about 4 good years left in the tank. So how did they improve the team for next year?(a) First they got a solid LT for the future, but one who, as a rookie, won't be an improvement on the solid one they have now. Net effect: No net benefit to the team in 2011.(b) Then they pass on multiple OLB/DL options in the areas of deepest need and trade their late first round pick for another late first round pick next year. Net effect: No net benefit to the team in 2011.(c) With the first pick of the 2nd round they take an injury-prone (and I mean injury prone) CB who projects as a nickel back. Net effect: Could be a nice upgrade in 2011, if he stays healthy.(d) With their 2nd pick of the 2nd round they select a solid, Kevin Faulk-type 3rd down back to replace Kevin Faulk, but oops! They already have a Kevin Faulk-type 3rd down back to replace Kevin Faulk. Okay, admittedly Vereen is bigger than Woodhead, but you get the idea. So call it a lateral move (pun intended) to round out the ranks. Net effect for 2011: Aside from adding depth, marginal benefit to the team in 2011.(e) With their 1st pick of the 3rd round, the Pats pick Stevan Ridley, a 5'11 225 downhill, between-the-tackles RB. Oops, sounds a lot like...Bejarvis Green-Ellis. Oh yeah, Green-Ellis is about 10 lbs lighter. Net effect for 2011: Aside from adding depth, marginal benefit in 2011.(f) With their 2nd pick of the 3rd round, the Pats select....Ryan Mallet? Ryan Mallet? Huh? Not to mention the side show going along with it...The Bottom Line: After making six picks in the first 3 rounds of the draft (who thought they would do that??), the Pats have done incredibly little to improve the team for the coming season. And you really have to be a genius to pull THAT off! -

The soft defense that couldn't pressure any QBs last year remains soft. -

wrong, they got much younger on offense which they needed and you still have trades and free agency. the draft is part 1 of a 3 part step to building your roster. apparently bill wants to with youth on offense and address the pass rush through free agency or trades or the improvement of spikes cunningham in year 2. you spoiled brat fans, judging the draft based off mel kipers draft board. come on your better then that.
yes I would have liked a pass rusher, but I'm 100 percent sure BB knows we need one. so let the next 4 rounds unfold as well as free agency and trades before you fire bb as coach. -

I disagree 100%. This Defense will be improved just by last years rookies gaining so much experience. -

The key is: The Patriots are a soft team. They are not tough. They did not get a speck tougher in the first 3 rounds.
That soft approach doesn't work. they get smucked in the playoffs because they are soft.
Way too soft. -

Dude, seriously....I'm sick of the fans that just want pretty picks. Use logic and think outside the box once in a blue moon before opening the fly catcher. Pretty funny how one simple catch in the playoff game would have giving us the win....cough cough....Alge Crumpler. -

Listen, no one wants to fire BB but lets look at the facts. After 08 everyone could see the pass rush and D was an issue. After 09 and the embarrassing loss to the Ravens in the playoffs everyone knew the pass rush was a problem. After the 10 season everyone knew the pass rush was a problem. Do you see a trend yet? For one odd reason or another BB doesn't draft rushing LB's and yet he has struck out repeatedly getting one through FA.
Cunningham and Spikes might develop more but they aren't a solution to the pass rush and nether is Fletcher, Moore, Nin, or TBC or the other JAGs trying to fill Seymours spot. Having 6 picks in the first 3 rounds you'd think they'd get younger on a line which Mankins doesn't want to come back, Neal is retiring, doesn't look like Light's coming back, Kaczur was just about released, and Koppen is thinking about retiring.
Instead he got an compliment RB to Woodhead and BJGE and a bigger version of BJGE. A CB with high potential but can't stay on the field. And a QB who likes to party so much that even the Dolphins wouldn't touch him with a 10ft pole. There's a very good shot that Mallett parties his way of out of the league well before he takes a regular season snap as a QB. The one great thing so far is that they found another book end T to protect a QB who might only have another 4 years left. -

This draft is not a disaster and they drafted good players BUT
They could have upgraded the D substantially, instead they added good players at positions where they already have good/great players, neglected their needs when they could have addressed them with GREAT players, and HAVE NOT UPGRADED THEIR DEFENSE VERY MUCH AT ALL.
they had 2 major needs and 1 minor OL OLB, and minor rb
It would be a much better team value to address these needs instead of a freakin QB??? Injury prone players always keep getting injured... he's awfully risky.... especially when you factor in the biggest needs were still available with multiple good players.... OL and OLB and DE were available with many great options. -

As far as I'm concerned, it's not really the bottom line until Stone Cold says so. -
