spikes may not be the best in coverage, but you have to be off your rocker to truly believe he is "nothing special". the pats run defense has been very good and its mainly been because of him and big vince stopping everything at the line. did you even watch spikes play in super bowl 46? he was PHENOMENAL.

following up.  PFT has a different version of what the contract is.  Either way, Brady's extension pays him more over the two years he had left on the deal.  PFT says Brady gets $30 mill next year.  Lets say he can make 20% on that money.  That's another 6 mill on top whatever else he gets paid.  Current money is always preferable to future money.

tom brady definitely isnt going to be struggling financially any time soon. the guaranteed money for this is double what it was, but it is good that he managed to get it done in a way where it can keep some cap space freed up for BB to go out and get him some more help on offense and defense.

Smart move by both parties.  However, should Brady's game diminish or should he get hurt (not expecting either).  There will be dead money there.

yes, and thats not exactly a good thing, but if anyone has earned that kind of guaranteed money, its him. every year now, people say he is going to fall off and every year he continues to produce...its common knowledge that ive been disappointed in his playoff performances of late, but as far as the past few regular seasons go, it looks like he hasnt fallen off one bit.

What difference does it make if he makes more. Good for him. The Pat's free up 15 mil in cap space over the next 2 years that they didn't have. Brady gets guarunteed money until he is 40 and the Pat's get cap certainty in 15,16 and 17 of about an average of 14 mil per year.

Sounds like a win, win to me.

To me it makes no difference at all.  I think Brady should get more money, but that is, in fact, contrary to what many here are saying.  Many wanted to believe he was taking some kind of a pay cut.  No such thing happened.

If I read things right, he turned 19 mill and no guarantees into 30 mill fully guaranteed over the next couple of years.

Its a good deal for Brady and a good deal for the pats as long as Brady performs.  As I see it, Kraft knows Brady's time is just about up.  this is not to suggest that Brady still can't play at the highest level, but one must consider the law of averages when a QB is approaching 40.  He's made a business decision to give the pats a couple/few more years with Brady at a high level to get another ring.

    Good for Kraft.

Re: Brady will retire a Patriot!!!

I'll say what I said before:

The pats extended with 2 years left on Brady's deal that was set to pay him 19 mill.  He will earn 28 mill per your reporter during those years with another 5 paid on the first day of the new year (if the prior year ends 2/14).

Its more.  No way to slice it differently.

Now, I don't believe that Brady would have held out or caused a stink with 2 years left on his deal, but he did and would with 1 year left (disconnect story).

This deal is different, though.  This was done to create cap space, and I speculate that they will redo a deal, if Brady continues to play well, possibly after the 2014 season or absolutely after the 2015 season.

If Brady does not perform well, then it is my belief that all of those weeks on the injury report for that bad arm will finally be used to allow Brady to retire with a significant parting gift.  wink wink.

Hey, gang.. when all is said and done, Brady is not hurting.  This hand wringing and suppositions why Brady did this is interesting.  If, and when, another 1 or 2 SB trophies are in the Pats trophy room, hwo much of this will be remembered?

This deal signals the end of Ryan Mallett's career with the Patriots. Look for him to be traded. If tthe Pats hold onto him, they'll eventually lose him to free agency for nothing.
