I haven't flown in years . . . What, exactly, is the danger of listening to music while the plane takes off? Or is this a "because I said so" situation?

Kinda agree with JiminFlorida here, prairie.  It MIGHT be a: "Because I SAID So," by some sn0tty flight attendant looking to enact her authority over some guy who's just trying to mind his own, OR...It might be some person simply trying to do what's detailed in her job requirements no matter what, and some a-h#le, who believes any and all rules that HE deems pointless himself even WHEN using someone else's services, IS giving this person a hard-time rather than turning off his ipod for all-of-10 minutes.  And WHY He's giving her a hard-time?  Well, My money's on 2 choices: 1) He didn't like in some way or fashion, HOW he was asked, approached or whatever, AND/OR 2) He has been on many flights (or even 1 flight)-Where he was NOT asked to turn of his ipod.  EITHER way, whther the rule is a good one OR a d^mb one, SOMEthing far larger is escaping this person:  In choice 1, It's that "Welcome to Reality"...not EVERYone knows you in NYC just yet, so wow- There just might be people yet to bow-down to your greatness.  In choice 2, It's that crazy, wacky notion that "There ARE different rules in different places by different service providers, Even IF (wow) THAT Service IS the same"...your greatness yet again, Does NOT ALWAYS let you enact in real-life, What YOU believe to be correct...you may have gotten used to life maybe bending like that to you, But it ain't an absolute power...

Re: Breaking News! Santonio Holmes...kicked off flight...

If Holmes is an engineer than he can argue.  Let's not forget the flight attendant is an employee who was told to make sure everyone turns off their electronic devices during takeoff.  She doesn't know anymore than Holmes what that does to the plane.  Why give her a hard time, just think to yourself it's a dumb rule and turn the thing off for 5 minutes.  Only a 5 year old would pick a fight over something so stupid.

The Planes can basically takeoff and land wothout looking outside the window.  It's amazing actually, they are in a cloud and can't see 5 feet in front of them going hundreds of miles per hour and find the runway.  check out this video, very cool

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsiGD-e1gAM

Anyway, the instruments that allow planes to do this are very precise, a few feet off  (which has happenned when a plane fifty feet in the air during landing got a reading that said it was on the ground and dropped the engines back), a few degrees off, whatever and it misses the runway.  Can electronics mess with those instruments?  Engineers have determined that some electronics can, since they aren't going to test every peice of electronic equipment on planet earth and list the ones that don't they just made them all off limits during takeoff and landing.  Most adults figure the mild inconvenience is more tolerable than the slim but possible chance of crashing and killing everyone.

Definetly a hole surrounded by a $ $, but he does have talent that can hurt you. This guy can stretch the field and in my opinion was the best player on the field when the steelers won there last super bowl.

How stupid do you feel (and you know who I'm talking to)? http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5154146

I feel kinda mistaken now RE: Santonio Holmes here, upon reading that ESPN Story...  Rather than Holmes keeping his ipod on and being an a-h0le to the stewardess and then being escorted off the plane in order to speak with officers, Holmes turned his ipod OFF and then was being an a-h0le to the stewardess and then he spoke with officers upon LANDING, not leaving...  In all, I feel pretty d^mb.  Thankfully the world-wide leader in clearing up smut, when it has to do with the teams they follow, has cleared this matter up correctly for me.

Listen this guy obviously is a problem , absolutely no debating that. Im not sticking up for him at all here , but can you guys leave the "thug" / "gang" B.S. alone. Im a little surprised at myself for even saying so , but it bothers me because its pretty clear that it has racist undertones. And trust me I absolutely hate when people use the race card on every little occasion , for instance the Duke NON-rape case. It just seems pretty obvious here , it was only a few , but you guys sound like those moronic T e a-bag gers. LOL I said T e a - B a g!

    LATEST NEWS ON THIS:

It turns out Santonio Holmes isn't quite the troublemaker some would have you believe. According to the Allegheny County Police Department (that's Pittsburgh), Holmes was not removed from a plane on Thursday night, as had been previously reported. According to the police statement, all that happened was that Holmes was asked to remove his iPod, and that's what he did. What a troublemaker.

That's an extremely painful comment brought from you bjesuss...  I mean, I personally know that I'M the sum-total of more than 1 single & self-admitted mere ostensible appearance: I Graduated College with honors in my double major, Worked from 14 yo-through College nearly always carrying 2 jobs throughout, Chaplain of my college fraternity, President of the Undergrad English Association, condo/vehicle owner standing on his own 2 feet since age 18, obsessive lover of knowledge, great with animals & children, Will ALWAYS attempt to dissipate an altercation First & foremost BEFORE I ALWAYS fight for my values WHENever that fails.....
YET see bjesuss, I ALREADY know that all my decent traits & experiences fall by the roadside like discarded bits of litter, When YOU bring YOUR vast skills and positive self traits to bear down on lil' ole me...I mean, I know that in the very limited time you've been here, That you've elicited ALREADY such wonderful aspects of your being such as:  Internet Troll, Arbitrary anger issues, Zero social politeness, decorum, or decency, An overly Biased outlook towards the things you enjoy, coupled with a pretensious, holier-than-thou entitled sense of derision towards others...oh, almost forgot a trully awful sense of humour too, wow...lotsa great stuff right there.  BUT bjesuss, I bet ALL of that is just a simple deliberate guise undertaken by yourself, In order to remain humble within your tough, hardened physical stature, Your learned knowledge, AND clearly your massive success and vast experiences that you've had so far in your well-accomplished life, right?

I'm and aircraft mechanic for a major airline.  Turning off all electronic devices during take-off and landing, the most critical times during a flight is a federal (FAA) rule not an airline rule.  Cell phones and pagers can cause interference with communications but they want the other electronics turned off also not so much because of the interference they may cause but because they don't want the passengers distracted during these critical stages of flight when most accidents happen.  If your aircraft ends up in the Hudson, you may have only seconds to get off the plane.  They want you to be alert and aware at these times.

Thank you, PatsEng and Salcon for informative answers. Not that "Because I said so" isn't a perfectly acceptable reason, but it's nice to have a little background.

I used to be a mechanic, now I'm a pilot.  Did you see the video I posted above.  Probably only aviation losers would think it's interesting.

Yeah, he didn't get kicked off the plane, He was met as he was leaving the plane by police officers after the crew complained.  This happens to all of us right, Just obeying the rules being quiet and the police grab you up when you get off the plane.

I've been in the cockpit of B777 during a check flight and we did a CATIII landing but not in those conditions.  Freaky!
