plus those same preseason games you want to cut is valueable time rookies have a chance to show off their talents. players such as Welker, endelman, antonio pierce, ryan grant, bart scott, london fletcher, jason peters, delhomme, pat williams, vinatieri, jeff saturday, jeff garcia, willie parker, james harrison, Romo, priest holmes, antonio gates, kurt warner, etc would never get the opportunity to show what they can do and they might not have had their amazing careers, might not have even gotten the opportunity to play professional football.  Preseason play is essential to roster cuts so coaches can evaluate rookie talent.  you would have to have expanded rosters by about 10 spots for the first 3 games to allow for the extended scouting. otherwise future greats could be cut out of football.
In Response to Re: Bring on 18 Game Season!!! : One of the aspects of an expanded season and bigger rosters that I actually like would be the variable of roster management it would add to the game. Whether the league mandates a limit on how many games a player may enter; or whether it is left to coaches to simply manage the roster to keep the players fresh, it introduces another variable to the coaching equation and would ultimately enhance the competition, I think. I like the idea of a guy like Belichick deciphering what situations would be best to rest key players to get maximum benefit out of everybody in a more gruelling season.

I agree.  I remember BB saying a few years ago that he doesn't want the active roster to be expanded beyond 45 because he thinks figuring out which players to play and how to use them in the most versatile way is one of the challenges of the game.  If you had more players active, you'd have more specialists too, and things woud get easier for coaches.

Forcing players to play a limited number of games would, I think, play in BB's favor because he's such a master at getting the most versatility from his players.  Plus, it would create a whole new dynamic of teams needing to get their back-ups prepared to step in and play at a high level.  I sort of like the idea.

This is a good point, too . . . I wonder, though, if two games is enough both to tune up the starters and get a look at the new guys?  Could two halves of football be devoted to the tune up and two to the review of back ups?  I'm not sure how much of the prep and evaluation takes place in practice and how much in the pre-season games.

Nate's point is well taken, and here again, we're seeing the guy who doesn't have a job yet getting screwed. I would imagine that if they're going to seriously shorten the actual preseason, the league would have to make allowances for more practice time and you would likely see more teams scheduling makeshift "scimmages" like we've seen when an upcoming pre-season opponent has come in early and the teams practiced together.

Your right, controlled scrimmages will become more popular. Once again, BB is ahead of the curve. Plus when it comes to player management with a larger roster who's gonna be better than BB?

I remeber the ridiculous 14 game season with 6 exhibition games.  I would suggest that if they go to an 18 game season, that there be 3 pre-season games.  You need time to look at the rookies and undrafted free agents.

Absolutely.

I don't think there's any doubt this happens sooner, rather than later . . .   7-9 divsion "winners" notwithstanding.

How about the fact that if it was an 18 game season this year, with a rookie salary cap in place and a higher value placed on the top pick, there isn't just 2 games left for the Carolina's of the world to not care about, it's 4.  If now I don't have to pay 150m to the top pick, and now it's 50m?  And I'm the GM... maybe I let the coach know it's a good idea to tank the season.  There's no value in winning 7 games if you can get away with 3Laughing

In the end.. as long as the fans queue up to pay the ticket prices, drink the beer at games, buy the team gear...  and all the millionaires in the NFL are getting paid, the business of the NFL will go on.  If the fans don't like, it, stop attending games.  If the players don't like it, play another sport because they know what they signed a contract for.

Diluting the playoffs is an even worse idea, but it will probably happen because keeping more teams in the hunt is good for revenue as are extra playoff games.

What I'd really like to see is a system where the top six in each conference go rather than the current system where division leaders and the next two best teams make it.  With eight four-team divisions, some of the division leaders can be pretty mediocre teams.

Re: Bring on 18 Game Season!!!

Someone earlier said he thought there was a bye between the pre-season and the season.  There isn't one.  Adding a second by week makes a lot of sense in the 18 game schedule and would be increasing the TV season weekends from 17 to 20.  That means about 17% more TV revenue.  It is also great for the fans because there would be 17% more time for meaningful games during the season.  I still think there should be a third pre-season game because it would allow unknown players to demonstrate their abilities.

How would the scheduling work?  Here are some suggestions:
1 - The other two games would go against comparable standing teams from two of the remaining three divisions in the other conference.  Which two would be on an annual rotating basis.  So if you line up N,S,E,W and you play all the teams in N, then you would play the matching teams in S and E.  The next year you would play all the teams in S and matching ones in E and W.  Then all the teams in E and matching ones in W and N.
2 - Have two games against the matching places in your conference for the divisions that you don't play all the teams.  So, this year it would for the Pats it would have been home and away for both Indy and SD.

For the playoffs I would like to keep the division winners -- but only if they have a WINNING record.  Otherwise, the team with the next best record gets in.

What I've heard they are planning to do is play the two additional games within conference. Right now teams play:

*The three teams in their own division twice (6 games)

*All four teams in one division within their conference (4 games)

*One team from each of the other two conferences within their division (2 games)

*All four teams in one division outside their conference (4 games)

The change would be in the red bullet.  It would become:

*Two teams from each of the other two conferences within their division (4 games)

How could that work??? Would it be that the first two in a division play the first two in each of the the two divisions and the last two play the last two?  That is the only way I can see that one working.

21 games to reach the super bowl, 22 if you're a wildcard team  seems like alot of games and alot of IR players to get there

I've heard multiple approaches, but I think the possibilities are

1+2 play 1+2, 3+4 play 3+4
1+3 play 1+3, 2+4 play 2+4
1+4 play 1+4, 2+3 play 2+3

I'm not sure any of these things are true, by the way.  I think I may have read it on this site. It makes sense though.  It would mean each team in a conference would play all but 4 of the other teams in the conference.
Take a look to EVERY TEAM INJURY LIST... all the players in injury reserve... i personally think it´s no fair for the players...   Almost every team has abot 8 to 10 players in IR and out for the year. The intensity between Pre season and regular season is TOTALLY  different !!! I think teams would need 3 or 4  more players in the active roster plus 1 or 2 more spots in the practice squad. i would not be against two bye weeks for team... that could make the season longer and maybe does not wear the teams down so much.
Posted by auchhhhhhhhhhh
Agreed. This is another dumb, shortsighted idea, motivated by greed. What makes the NFL so great is that almost every game played during the season is meaningful. Why water the season down? How has that helped the NBA and NHL? Furthermore...the league should not expand the number of playoff teams, so the same reason.

Finally, expanding to 18 games will definately shorten careers...and warp the record books.

Don't like it as a fan or for the players.

Whose gonna want to come out and watch a couple meaningless home games in the cold of january when your team is 2-14? there will be no fans in the stands

they need to add 4 more teams to the playoffs instead.

these players can not take that much beating, the players should resist this at all costs

The NFL season is great how it is.  Why mess with it?  There are many teams that cant even sell out their stadiums with 8 home games.  Why add more empty seats?

Here's a thought..  or two...

Seems one of the biggest issues is the 4 game pre-season.  The league does not have to increase the regular season to 18 games since many feel the 16 game season is perfect as it is.  The league can consider reducing the number of pre-season games, 3 at most, and, maybe, move up the start of the season to have fewer games in the cold of winter other than playoff games or add another bye week.  I do not think fans will mind another bye week, there are plenty of games to go around to wet your appetite, if it means players stay healthy and the games are higher quality.

i like every thing you stated except another bye week, shrink the pre-season to 2 games and add 4 more teams to the playoffs, 8 for each conference, no bye week in the playoffs, just homefield advantage.

The biggest issue with the pre-season is season ticket holders being forced to pay full price for tickets. If you are complaining about pre-season as a fan watching from home, then you just need to svck it up. But, the owners can fix the issue by - not charging full price to season ticket holders. Ta-da.
