    Bruce Irvin

This AM on The NFL Network, I believe it was Michael Lombardi who mentioned that there were multiple teams that had promised to take Irvin in Rd 1 atleast one of which was drafting late in Rd 1... NE met with Irvin pre-draft and I'd be curious to see what would've happened if Irvin had still been on the board at 21.

    We may never know.

Bottom line, I'm excited to see Hightower/Jones in Foxboro.

[QUOTE]i was thinking this same thing, but then i considered that irvin has nothing to offer against the run. that doesn't sound like someone BB would target in round 1. he ended up with jones and hightower, two guys who are run stuffers and offer pass rush help. irvin is a one trick pony at the moment.

I don't disagree on either point, Hightower in particular was one of the top guys on my board.

I'd still be curious to know though... someone on NFL network had reported yesterday that when a bunch of NFL Personnel types were polled as to "if you had only one player in this draft to rush the passer for just one play, who would it be" and apparently the majority said Irvin.

There was a late night twitter exchange between a few folks like lombardi who said they had heard no less than 7 teams had him rated in their top 15 players.

Seems odd given his long rap sheet even if he is von miller like in athletic talent and pass rush.

He does have some history, but it's also the type of history that would compell a team to draft him, he has shown a lot of perserverance coming from where he was to where he is today.

Teams would want to draft him because he was a drug dealer as a high school drop out? I don't think that's the history teams look for given the crack down on drugs lately

Nobody was close when it came to combine measurable's, yeah he had baggage, took the long route to the NFL but his shuttle and forty jumped off the screen. He will be a well rounded all purpose linebacker if he keeps his nose clean.

He basically put up similar to slightly better combine numbers than Von Miller and Miller was taken 2nd overall last year.

[QUOTE]did anyone see him in coverage drills? he may have put up better combine numbers than miller, but miller had the college production, run support, and coverage ability to warrant that #2 pick.

Irvin had college production as a sack specialist as did Miller.  Miller often sat out on obvious running downs and was brought in as a 3rd down sack specialist and was not routinely asked to cover in college.  Read their scouting reports in terms of weakness.  They are practically identical arguing about size, ability to hold up against the run and to drop back in coverage.  I am not saying Irvin is going to be as good as Miller, but it's not like Miller didn't have similar concerns.

I think your a little off with that. Jones is not a good defender against the run( not saying he cant develop into a better run defender) but He's more a pure pass rushing guy, Hightower on the other hand is a nasty run stuffer like you said but is average to below average in Pass coverage with some ability to get after the passer.

I would rather have Hightower over Irvin all day. Give me the guy who was a leader on the best defense in the nation and learned from a BB disciple any day of the week.
