Burgess or Vrabel.... Who would you rather have?

Re: Burgess or Vrabel.... Who would you rather have?

We should consider these dynamics...(1)it's Mayo's second year..he ain't getting worse..(2)Thomas stays outside right..where he belongs...(3) it's Guyton's second year...(4) Seymour(healthy),Fork, and Warren return...new vet corners with rookies and 2nd year guys pushing them...(5) a pass rushing left OLB in his prime and playing for a contract....(6) Merriweather is in third year, and Chung may challenge for time by mid-season...and finally....every team has to look behind our center and see a guy wearing #12 again...that's a serious confidence croaker. Burgess will be a force to deal with, and our secondary is the primary beneficiary. If not decimated by injuries, the Pats have refilled the can of Whup-A## and are going to roll this year like Patton went through France.

Although Vrabel's performance dropped off last year, it's hard to say if this was a permanent thing or if he would have rebounded this year.  Many players have off years where their numbers slack off substantially.  That said, he was getting up in the years so a rebound became less likely.  I'd say Vrabel.  I'll likely be proven wrong over the season but I'm going for it anyway.  I'm probably just being sentimental.  Vrabel exemplified the Pats. I feel like there was more to letting Vrabel go than his numbers last year, or even his not that high cap hit.  Both Vrabel and BB are professionals who are not about to get into any details though.

Agree with everything you say.  What he didn't have and what he contributed to was the Pat's lack of defensive speed.  Well known through out the league from opposing scouts.  Burgess fulfills a role....pass rushing specialist.  He will be used in situations in which he likely to succeed not fail.  Hence the success of the team.

I love Vrabel.  He's done so much for the team over the last couple of years.  Still hard to believe he was only a back-up in Pittsburgh.  But like all players, they slow down, and Vrabel is doing that.  With Burgess we might possibly get another Vrabel...only younger.  We'll have to wait and see.  As they say, "In BB we trust."

Vrabel when he was 31 hands down over Burgess.

Re: Burgess or Vrabel.... Who would you rather have?

Vrabel would have been a free agent next year, and he was 2nd in the NFL defensive player of the year voting in 2007.  It would have cost the Patriots too much to renegotiate a contract, so they traded him (or dumped him, might be a better term).

The Patriots always seem to specialize in getting your best, at bargain prices, if you haven't noticed.  Players can stay for the ride, and get some rings, or jump ship for the dollars.  I think Vrabel made it aware that he was ready to get paid next year, they likely ran into a wall trying to negotiate something.  So they sent him to a team that wasn't a threat, same with Cassell.

It isn't a good comparison of players (Burgess or Vrabel), it's economics.

We will miss Vrabel for his versatility and for his leadership, however..... the team is loaded with veteran leadership.  Overall, the team will be stronger with Burgess, Woods, Crable, Thomas at OLB. Also, Love how the Safety's and CB's are getting younger.. setting the tables for another dynasty!

I think if BB was confident that Vrabel could hold down that spot for a full year at his salary he'd be here right now.  Things change.  Vrabel was a good player, but it couldn't go on forever.

Yep, that is the primary concern. Although like you said, the mere fact that they gave up so much (more than I would have as a matter of fact) shows that they "see" something. The player's intelligence will come out, or not, on tape. I don't think there is too much you can figure out in an interview. But it is a little easier because there is the better part of a decade of tape against NFL caliber offenses to look at his read & react ability. Like you said, even if he is just a pass rush guy, he is still valuable for this team. I don't know if that is 3rd rounder valuable though. So I am hoping he can be an every down character.

Z,  I agree with you that we should hope Burgess not only "gets" the defensive scheme, but that he can be more than just a third down player.  While I know his reputation isn't as strong against the run as it is being a pass rusher, with his speed and (presumably) playing behind Seymore and next to Mayo (if that's how it works out), I think we could count on him holding his own against the run and being able to "set the edge" opn that side--which, until last year Vrabel was particularly adept at doing.  And if he does work out, that side of the defense should be really strong, IMO.

It will be interesting watching him in the preseason games to get a sense of how he is fitting in on the defense.  At least he has proven over his career that he can play (and play well) in the NFL, so in that respect he is an upgrade over any rookie we would have drafted to try and fill that position.

Re: Burgess or Vrabel.... Who would you rather have?

Vrabel was one of my favorite Pats, but...  I have to go with Burgess.  Younger, cheaper, (hungrier?).

I love what the Pats have done in re-making the defense, the potential is really exciting.  I've posted this before, but what I want to see now is

    BLITZES!!!

You know, the good old it-seems-like-Romeo-has-12-men-on-the-field jailbreaks.  I loved that aggressiveness, and it would be great to see more of it.

This is not even a question, I would take Vrabel over Burgess any day of the week. Vrabels football IQ is so much higher then this guy its not even funny. He was a coach on the field and he never came off the field. You cant replace a Mike Vrabel.
