    Re: Bye Bye Woody

What happens if Vereen gets hurt?

There's a reason why BB kept 5 TEs. Having a rb who can line up wide is an integral part of the offense and BB can't afford to lose that. He is also their best pass blocker.

I think BB will be able to get him for similar type of deals that he got K. Faulk with.

Woodhead is still ahead of Demps and Bodden on the depth chart. A guy like Bodden is easier to find a replacement for. We don't even know what Demps can do, but right now he's probably strictly a return guy

Gee, Demps has clearly proven he is a better player than Woody who has really done nothing this year. Woody is such a disappointment. I am sure it is a foregone conclusion.

I need more info. Your mind was made up all season? Vereen has one sensational game, Demps you have not seen? Woodhead has been a star in some victories, crucial 1st downs, TDs, blocks, oh never mind ......  as far as the light?

Cloud nine gets all the publicity, but cloud eight actually is cheaper, less crowded, and has a better view.

woody is good. bb loves the guy. he knows how things are done.

and we will have to make some cuts next year some how.

    we shall see.

i truly dont think any decisions or even teh info necessary will be there until next pre-season.

thereofore i belive woody gets a contract even if for a year. he still could be cut though.

my hunch is bb keeps him at least another year.

bb gets committed to players who are committed, smart, do everything asked and beyond, and who perform (some who might even not be the best).

I think Woody will be back. He is not going to command alot of money and you can never have to many good players. If you think Vereen is going to take his place, who steps in when Vereen goes down? Woody is the type of back up (or middle class) player BB loves to have on his teams.

back field is too crowded and woody will cost too much. i wouldn't be surprised if a team like Cincy over pays for him just as they did BGE. my mind has been made up ALLLL season.

if woody goes for top $, indeed it wont be here.

he would in fact proabably have a longer career elsehwere if to a good team who knows how to use him. he is valuable here. its just that it is possible that someone may have a higher physical threshold in the future. but heart and head hes up there with anyone. im rooting for him.

    In response to carawaydj's comment:

Me and Bruschi think he should stay.  All Woody has done is make key plays for us all year.  He might have been the best player on offense in the SB last year.  If Vereen makes good plays on Sunday, and then does the same thing in the SB, I'll join you.  Well no, actually I won't.  I'll take Woody over Bolden and most definitely take him over an unproven player like Demps.  I like Bolden btw.  Woody is turning into a good Faulk replacement.  Maybe Vereen will be even better.  Given how often RB's get injured, it would be nice to keep 2 RB's who can catch and fill that 3rd down back role.

    +1

if theres a way to keep them all and not suffer that wouldnt be terrible

DONT THINK SO... wait and see...

this guy is a game changer... he will be a pat for years to come...

    RIDLEY

    VAREEN

    WOODHEAD

    BOLDEN (SPECIAL TEAMS)

    DEMPS  (KICK AND PUNT RETURNER)

    THATS WHY IS GONNA WORK

if demps is on the team he should have some runs per game and passes too.

    Woody = Sproles ?

Despite the fact that they're both primarily 3rd down specialists AND both undeniably vertically challenged , they're not of equal value ... IMO .

Sproles is a to-the-house type of scat-back / returner extraordinaire while Woody is more of a cerebral move-the-chains by any means possible  type of player  - that also excels at understanding pass blocking .

Off the top of my head I'd say he'd be resign-able for something in the neighborhood of 2 years for 3.2 mil ...which would double his current salary

    (  2 yrs - 1.6 mil -  signing bonus included )

Plus - You have to factor in his yearly playoff earnings by suiting up for the Pats

( not to mention the media exposure he gets by playing here ... endorsements )

I'm fairly confident Woody isn't going anywhere in 2013

no, i never said "woody = sproles" but they are comparable. sproles obviously offers more and is a home run threat. another player who is comparable is leon washington who signed a 4 year $12.5mill contract with seattle. i would place woody somewhere in the middle of the 2 regarding talent and value.

he's clearly behind ridley and vereen going into the 2013 season. to think he will accept a team friendly deal like 2 for $3.2 while getting limited snaps and passing up a bigger deal from a team offering him a bigger role in the offense is very optimistic thinking. but i could be wrong.....

agreed that coudl be his choice. which is why i say it might be better for him to go elsewhere. but i like him. and i like what he does.

    In response to leatherhelmet's comment:

Hardly the lone voice..... I said all along the Woody was a nice player but the Pats had more explosive weapons and used the lil man just a tad too much.(Especially on 3rd and short) That being said, Woody has more than proven himself as a valuable member of this team and altho his touches may go down with the emergence of Vereen and the unknown in Demps, BB will find a way to keep Woody around unless some one want to over pay for his services.

exactly how i see it add his thoughts on having a bigger role elsewhere

    bred,

there is no waiting until next preseason buddy. woody is a free agent entering next season. you can't cut a player who isn't under contract. if woody was under contract for the 2013 season i would have never made this thread.

hey ricky, we give him at least a year so we have him here to evaluate the whole deal

in a perfect world that would be ideal. but i'm trying to think objectively. NE can't just sign woody to a 1year deal, he has to agree to it. i'm sure after the season he's had he will be looking for stability and a decent payday. hopefully i'm wrong...

  • as i said, i think it may be smart for him to do so if he gets a big opportunity elsewhere (which i think he could). yes it is up to danny

we could give him 2 or 5 years, but its all in the guaranteed money. catch me?

2 years, 3, 4, etc guaranteed 2 mil, 3 mil 4mil, whatever is all that will matter.

It's already been said here but yes absolutely he will be back. AS LONG AS the money is right.

There is a reason Woody getting hurt did not affect the part of the initial game plan the Pats had for the game that included him. They had Shane Vereen. Before you say exactly, even if the roles are reveresed on the depth chart you need someone to fill that role if Vereen goes down. BB likes depth.

Do we know Demps can do the job? Is reliable? Can he pass block effectively? Can he actually get or pick up the system? We have no proof of any of that at this moment.

We also have to see if Vereen even leap frogs Woody first.

The one thing that is certain is that Woody won't have the superior negotiating position in new contract talks.

    Re: Bye Bye Woody

Just wondering, since Bolden was suspended for PED's has BB used him for anything but mop up duty? Since Bolden has been back has Woody's numbers gone up or down?

If one RB is getting kicked off the team I highly doubt it's the most productive 3rd down back we've had since Faulk, esp with Brady's complete trust in him. We aren't talking about a huge contract either we are talking $1-2mil a year range which is what they pay some of the sub's. Well worth the price imo for someone who just produces compared to putting complete faith into a guy who's never taken a reg season snap, Demps (though I love his potential), someone who hasn't shown anything special since getting busted for PEDs, Bolden, and someone who has had 1 good game as a pro so far, Vereen (though he has great potential too). What's the old saying, you pay for production not potential.

Sorry but IMHO that is like saying Kevin Faulk was not needed every time a new kid came in and did well in a couple of games.

A good track record in games and practice is extremely important in the Pats world
