    Can McCoy play DE?

A lot of the "experts" mock drafts have Gerald McCoy falling to number 6 (he will go no further and may very well be gone at 3), but the question is can he play DE in our 3-4 system?

He widely considered to be better at "getting to the QB" and providing "an interior pass rush" the Suh.  While Suh is the better DT prospect could McCoy actually become a BEAST playing a DE in the 3-4.  Remember the DE spot is much more valuable then a DT, the franchise tag for DT's is $6.4 million compared to the $10.2 million it would take to Franchise a DE.

This means he could be playing at one of the 4-5 positions who are actually worth the money guaranteed to those draft slots.  We could move up to get him if is he is available at 5 when our good friend Scotty drafts with the Chef's.

Just a thought, we have a lot of picks and this guy might be the best player in the draft.  If he could play our DE spot our DEF would be looking very good for a number of years to come.

    Re: Can McCoy play DE?

It would undoubted cost us number 22 and a second.

To move up to the 5th spot to grab the Sanchise last year it cost the JETS jets jets jets the 17th and 52nd over all picks.

So with #'s 22, 44, 47 and 52 we should be looking good to trade at this spot.

Would anyone really be upset if we used #'s 22 and 44 to go grab this guy to play DE?  Plus I think BB likes to shock everyone once in a while and this would really do it...  He loves to spend big picks on d-lineman considering them the least likely to bust and worthy spots to spend the big guaranteed dough of a top ten pick.

Now if in my dreamworld we can get him, Hughes and Gerhart I would love that draft.

    Re: Can McCoy play DE?

I don't know who will draft him but he's really a D tackle who played mostly one gap DT at Oklahoma. So I'm sure he can play the end position as thats basically the same as playing DT in a 4-3.

In Response to Re: Can McCoy play DE?:
When QB throws for 34 yds in a home play-off game, dont need a pass rush. Seems everyone forgets the Ravens game. Pass rushing specialist, can be found in any round. Charles Haley 4th rounder out of James Madison, for example. Posted by bobbysu

If a pass rushing specialist could be had in any round then why do most teams need help getting to the QB?

The answer is because those specialists cannot stay on the field unless it is 3rd and 10.   A 3-4 DE is a 3 down guy who has to be a complete player.  They have to set and hold the edge against huge OT's and are asked to rush the passer on THE SAME DOWN.  Thats why DE is such a big deal, especially in our DEF.  We struggled as a team Def last year and it was directly related to big Sey's hole.

The O struggled in the passing game against BAL because THEY COULD GET TO THE QB, something we cannot and will not be able to do until we get a guy to fill Sey's shoes...

Also if you remember we only had one real receiver on the field after Wes went down.  I doubt we will be in the same spot regardless this year.  We will not spend our 1st rounder on OFF unless it is a lineman, mark my words...

    Re: Can McCoy play DE?

I believe that both Mc Coy and Suh could play 3-4 DE, however, both might make better interior linemen playing the 30 and controlling the gaps. The only way The Pats get a shot at either is if they trade Brady (not kidding) or two or three picks one of which is the 2011 Raiders pick. I'd like to see Suh or McCoy on the Pats Dline as much as any fan, but realistically it would take a huge draft day trade for that to happen. Odrick and Lamar Houston are more realistic draftees from the DE/DT spot. If AD leaves than the Pats will acquire an OLB at some point. I just don't see one top five draftee being the singular solution to all the Pats problems on D (Mc Coy or Suh as the new and improved Seymour) or offense (Jahvid Best as this the next Chris Johnson or whatever). The Pats have to address some dificiencies, but I don't think we get the huge impact player unless we trade up. We get good players that fill a specific role and develop into great players overtime.

    Re: Can McCoy play DE?

It seems like Rams are extremely interested in Bradford. Between him and Suh, I think it is always wise to go for a franchise QB. QBs sell tickets. Suh might be a great presence, but he cannot turn the franchise on its head. Having said that, Suh might go to Lions and McCoy might fall to as low as 7, or 8. Mocks have Seahawks taking him, but I doubt that. They would want to go for an OT like Okung. If he falls beyond Browns at #7, then we should jump the gun and go for Oakland #8, and try to pick him.
Again, a very rare chance of this happening, but I would jump with joy if this happens. We can give our 1st, maybe the last 2nd and can throw in our first next year (which might be #32 ;-) and move to #8.

There is a very easy templet to use for trading, the 5th pick last year cost the jets their 1st (17th overall) and their 2nd (52nd overall).  Using this as a bench mark getting us into the 5-6 range should only cost us the 22nd and 44th picks.  I would give those up in a heartbeat.

Me to. McCoy has talent that makes your entire defense better. Trouble is he will be gone before that and if I'm sitting there at 5 and he falls into my lap, I don't trade him for just a 1st and second, I would need more. Love watching him destroy double teams, shoot gaps, move like a 260 pounder and hold his ground on short yardage.

    Re: Can McCoy play DE?

IMHO I cant see him playing the 5 technique in a 3-4. Both are versatile enough to play different positions. I think Suh can play DT in a 4-3 and DE in a 3-4. I believe McCoy and play DT in a 4-3 and NT in a 3-4. Who knows he might be able to work into one , but as of right now I dont see it. Its funny and a lil' confusing to me that people say McCoy can get to the QB more often than Suh , when Suh has more TFL's and sacks. And Im not sure Id want McCoy playing the 5 technique other than for situational purposes. I see his value and talent/skills in the middle stopping the run and collapsing the pocket , but thats just me. In terms of him coming to the PATS or them moving up to grab him , I dont like it. He has the potential to be a great player , but the DT position is stacked this year , I wouldnt dare trade up that much. Although I do want the PATS to trade up a few spots and grab a stud. Ive been saying for weeks that Haden will drop out of the top ten , hes an absolute player and has all-pro potential. Most UNEDUCATED fans , like 99% of the morons that come on here just want someone who can rush the passer. They think if we get a pass rush that our D will all of a sudden be fix. This couldnt be farther than the truth , we have huge needs at the ILB , DE , CB and S on the D side. These are glaring needs that reallt arny up for debate. Sorry I hate saying that and sounding like Im an expert , but its really not that hard to see these holes. It six to admit , but the one good thing about it is that we can pretty much go best available in the draft at least that my opinion. For example I hear some know nothings talk and say that our S position is loaded and we're all set there. Again I hate being an azzhole , but you just dont know what your talking about if you think that. Meriweather is what he is and its just not good enough. A guy that Ive been screaming about for the past two years is Earl Thomas from Texas. Ive been saying for months that this guy is " mosdef " on Eric Berrys level and I think Berry is an absolute stud. IMHO Thomas is better at tackling and wrapping up , both him and Berry can/will and like to make that big hit/tackle. Thats something that is extremely rare these days , these are two guys that IMHO are top ten talents , if we can get Thomas at 12-17 it would be a steal. Listen Im not one of these know nothing fans that think we need an all-pro at every position , but these team is in real need of a stud , difference maker/game changer. Guys like 12/81/75/51 are game changers , these are the guys that really make a difference in the W-L column. And we need a few more guys like them , thats why Im for moving up and getting a Thomas , McClain , or Haden. Grab someone like one of them and then maybe a Spikes , Robinson , Warren , Mike Johnson , Gerhart , D-Williams/LaFell/Benn , or Sapp in the second , late second. Move up and grab a stud around 11-15 or tarde out into the second.

    Re: Can McCoy play DE?

ok, but in the last 2 years the chef's drafted a DT and a DE very high in the first.  They need O-line help in the biggest way.  Every mock draft has them going with the best available tackle, why not offer them Light or Kazcur and the first plus something...  could work, maybe it was Scotty who liked to trade down not BB.
