Re: CNN reporting an arrest has been made

Funny, isn't it, how after the slaughter in Newtown, so many on the right rose up to defend an absolutist interpretation of the second amendment, while after the slaughter in Boston so many of the same people rise up to demand suspension of the bulk of the remaining amendments that make up the Bill of Rights?

Re: CNN reporting an arrest has been made

The question isn't so much whether or not things should change, it's what things should change.  Personally, I don't look forward to a society where the writ of habeas corpus and all the due process that goes along with it are revoked and instead the government kills and detains at its whim and every citizen goes about armed and ready for combat.  There are plenty of countries like that in the world today and there were plenty more like it throughout history.  America was supposed to be different.  But maybe that's just too much to expect, human nature being what it has, over the centuries, shown itself to be.

Sadly, the MAJORITY of Americans know what those "whats" are. But, money and power will unfortunately win.

I was thinking the same thing this morning Rusty. Most Americans would be hard pressed to tell you what habeas corpus is or why it's so important, but a gun, that's something everyone can understand . . . and, heck, buy at Walmart.  Trade some civil rights I don't even understand for a shiny new toy that fires 30 rounds in a few seconds? You bet I would!

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

    Amendment V

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

    Amendment VI

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

    Amendment VII

In Suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

    Amendment VIII

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Don't waste your breath with card carrying liberals like Prolate.

Well it does not help when schools keep getting closed down everytime there is a budget crunch. Yet defense budgets are practically untouchable. Wait... why is that happening?

I agree it's not supposed to be a career, but what does being a liberal or conservative have to do with that idea?

What is your main beef with "liberals" and how they interpret the Constitution?

I am not a liberal, but I'd bet dollars to donuts that if the founding fathers could come back from the dead, they would have signed off on that gun control legilsation the other day. All of em.

They were principled people, but they certainly weren't morons either.

It's a bit of a myth that the founding fathers were all amateurs who served a term or two and then went back to their farms. Many of them had long careers as politicians and statesmen, both before and after the revolution.  Experience, skill, and knowledge is as valuable in statesmanship as it is in any complex profession. The problem in the states isn't the length of terms it's the quality of the characters serving those terms.

That, and the ever corrupting influence of money.

The term "enemy combatant" doesn't even appear in the constitution. Yes, I know that that term has been used in recent years as a way to describe a class of persons who alledgedly are not subject to the protections of either the Constitution or the Geneva Conventions. And I know many Americans think it expedient to create such a class of persons with no legal rights.  That's okay.
