    Re: Dallas Clark to NE?

We may have the answer to losing Hernandez right on our roster. Free agent rookie Zach Sudfeld has been getting rave reviews from the very first OTA's. He is almost 6'7"  runs a 4.7 forty, has a ridiculous 37inch vertical and has great hands. He also had an impressive 3 cone time. I know it's way too early to say this kid will even make the roster, but I have been intrigued by him since he committed as a free agent. We could conceivably have a lineup of Gronk and Ballard at TE, and Sudfeld split out wide with Dobson and Amendola. That is a huge lineup that would have mismatches all over the field. Sudfeld may be a good redzone weapon with his height at 6'7" and a 37 inch vertical.

Ballard, Fells, Ford, Hoomanawanui, Sudfeld and Gronk (even if is for 1/2 a season) . . . then maybe they throw Tebow into the mix.

Recently saw Clark in Indy.  He looks healthy.

Ballard and Sudfeld may not be Gronk and Hern,  but they'd be the best duo in the AFC East. No need to go sign wash ups.

That sounds terrible. Somehow people are looking at Ballard like he was a pro-bowler in 2011. The last time he played his was 17th in yards in 20th in TDs amongst NFL TEs. He would now become the Patriots number one option at the position (replacing two players who had more catches, yards, and TD than he did in 2011). He is a solid young TE but he is world's behind Gronk and Hernandez at this point.

Fells, Ford, Hoomanawanui and Sudfeld are supposed to fill in that gap?

Not to mention Edelman is the only WR on the roster who caught at pass from Brady last year.

If Gronk starts the season injured and Hernandez is not with them team because of off-field problems, the Patriots will begin without their top five pass catchers from last season (Welker, Lloyd, Gronk, Hernandez, Woodhead). Those five accounted for just under 85% of all completions and 70% of total offensive yardage.

Well, his QB was Eli Manning so that explains the middle of the pack rankings there.

    Run the ball.

    [/QUOTE]

That would make sense if the Giants did not throw the ball the fifth most in the league (Eli was actually fourth in passing yards in 2011). Statistically speaking, based on his one season, he is an average NFL TE.

What is that based on? Sudfeld may not even make the team. Last year the Patriots carried 4 TEs on the 53-man roster for most of the year (Gronk, Hern, Hoomanawanui, and Fells) and dressed 3 for most games. Right now, there are 7 on the 90-man roster (that counts Gronk and Hern).

Secondly, how did Ballard it seems like our opinion of Ballard has grown and grown in his year off from football. He was an average NFL TE in 2011. Nothing more. He has potential, but that may be all he ever is. His 2011 numbers are comparable to guys like Chandler in Buffalo and Keller (now) in Miami.

Sure, ballards only season with more than ZERO catches (2011), he had 38.  Keller had 65... pretty much the same thing.

That is more to my point. Without the Gronk and Hern, the "top" TE on the roster is average at best. People talk about him like he is an All-Pro.

    Re: Dallas Clark to NE?

Ballard was very slow prior to having micro fracture surgery. Watching him run he looks to be about 75-85% recovered. Once 100% will he have the speed to play TE?
