    Danny Woodhead to Return?

I'm a pretty big Danny Woodhead fan, and I think he brings quite a bit to our team, especially in key 3rd down situations.  I think he's a smart, tough player and I also think that Brady trusts him.  I hope he is able to work out a deal with the Patriots to return next season.  With that being said, one guy who I would probably sign over Woodhead would be Reggie Bush.  Since being the #2 overall pick nearly a decade ago, Bush has been a solid, not spectacular player.  He has had his moments of brilliance, but has proven that he isn't a consistet "every down player" in the NFL.  To me, he would be a great 3rd down back for NE, with the explosiveness to be a true "home run threat."  I really believe that he could be had for not much more than Woody.  Would it be worth it to let Woodhead walk and try to bring Reggie in for a few bucks more?

    Re: Danny Woodhead to Return?

If he came cheap, sure, but I highly doubt he comes at a discount.  He had a solid stint with the dolphins and will command an amount we aren't willing to pay for, considering the running back position isn't a position of depth in this year's market.

Plus, I'd like to see Vereen in an expanded role this upcoming season.  He showed flashes of greatness last year with breakaway speed and great 3rd down potential.

Get rid of Woody (even though I love him), keep Ridley in the 1st and 2nd down role, Vereen gets third down role, while Bolden spells both of them, specifically on the goal line.  Ideally, get Ridley 14-18 carries, Vereen 6-8, Bolden 8-10 carries a game and we will be set.

I would play Vereen over both of them. Having said that I still think Bush will get more $ on the market, ergo Woody would be better bang for the buck.

I have mentioned it here several times that I think Bush would fit in this offense perfectly.  The only bad thing is he will probably be expensive.  Something about his name warrents big bucks for some reason.

    Re: Danny Woodhead to Return?

Yeah, I'd leave Bush alone, our RBs are diversified now, don't see the improvement. I like Woodhead alot. The thought of losing Woodhead and Welker the same year is a bit upsetting because all I think of is 1st downs, they just do it. Getting Woodhead back would certainly delight the Jets fans .... The word excitement defines Woodhead. The kid is good in the role he plays, one of the toughest small guys ever, run/pass/PA.

Have a great night to all ...

    ricky,
at any cost or offer a low cost couple years?

before end of seaosn i gave resonably low offfers i suggested for edelman and woodhead.

if it costs next to nothing to keep him, redundancy is helpful in football. players get hurt.

    Re: Danny Woodhead to Return?

No on Bush - he is a 1000 yd back but needs and wants to be the lead back not a 3rd down specialist and he probably has a few more years as such and will be paid for that.

On Woody - love him and would like to see him back. I will be curious what his market is. ESPN suggested 3 yr/3M which is what BJGE got last year but to be a feature back. I see Woody more in the 2M/yr range and maybe a little less. At 1.5M I could see the Pats resigning him. He is a really good 3rd down back with an uncany ability to wriggle for 1st downs and decent receiver skills. And you can depend on his blitz pick-up which is where Vereen is still learning.

With Ridley, Vereen, Bolden, and Demps under contract I don't see the Pats really looking for RBs unless they find a steal later in FA. The backs they have are all very young and developing, bringing in a 'name' FA would stunt their growth and probably not greatly increase the overall production. This is not the situation of years before where the FA pick-ups were because the roster was pretty bare.

Woodhead's a good player that will help some team out there, I just don't think it will be us. We drafted Vareen - it's time for some of these draft picks to step up and fill the void.

    Re: Danny Woodhead to Return?

Good stuff.  If we can get Woody back for around 1.5 mil per year, I think it's a no-brainer.  The thing with Bush is that he getting a little bit old for someone to shell out big money for a RB.  I bet he ends up taking less than we think, where ever he lands.  Speaking of RBs, anyone know what's up with Demps?  I know he wants to keep running track, but is he still going to play for NE next year?

Vereen and Demps may make Woodhead test the waters of free agency . . . I see fewer and fewer touches around here for Woodhead . . . so over the last two years it is goodbye to Benny and the Jet!

FYI - Vereen 944K, Ridley 805K, Bolden 485K, and Demps 409K represent about 2.5M in Cap - certainly not a prohibitive amount to be spending in the backfield. Paying Woody 1.5M would not be overspending or overstocking on the position - the other option being finding a receiving FB like maybe Casey?

I would love a low end deal and a sign and trade to Seattle for FB, Michael Robinson

Imagine this guy on the field with Bolden and Ridley?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEfZR3_qnIo

I give Robinson a ton of credit for what he's done to become the player he is.  Guy was a heck of a QB in college although it was obvious he would never play the position in the NFL.  Talk about a team player.  FB is probably one of the least glamorous positions to play in the NFL and it requires a completely different skillset and body type.  Great story.

Every single Patriots free agent comes with positive Patriots medals on their chests:  14-2, 13-3 and 12-4 in their last three seasons.  Really, would you overpay a guy from an anti-Patriots team with 2-14, 3-13 and 4-12 records over the past three seasons?  Plus, there's an epidemic of hiring away people from good teams in order to hear about their latest secrets.

Woodhead will get a nice fat deal from, say, Daniel Snyder.  So will every one of the FAs.

I feel like Woody is in the same boat as Welker.  Teams view them as system players.  Now Wes will still get paid from a few teams, but what team do you guys honestly feel will think they are better by having Woody?  Usually a player like Woody would also be good at PR or help out somehow on special teams.  Woody is a great player for the Pats, but I am not sure what team would want to spend to get him...

I agree to some extent - he certainly isn't going to wow folks. But a passing team that is looking for a third down back could do a lot worse. He is not going to cost a lot and is a nice chip to have. I see him signing somewhere for 1.5 - 2M. If no one offers him that, I could see him back with the Pats at 1+M. They don't necessarily need him, but he would be a nice piece to have in case Demps flakes out or one of the others gets injured.

Woodhead is a very good role player.  I am hoping he will be back.  He is good at picking up the blitz, special team player, has a great locker room presence and he is able to get tough yards.  Hard to let some one like that walk

No need for Bush. The player he would compete with is Vereen and Vereen is younger.

Why let him go. We are NOT going into a season with only 3 RBs. That would be foolish in this league and especially if we are wanting to put more into a running game.
