In Response to Re: Defensive Hog Index - Patriots Tied For 23rd out of 32 Teams : At least they've gotten to the red zone a whole lot.  In the Buffalo game, crushing the Buffalo defense may have been the secret to the Patriots' fourth quarter breakout.  The crushing Patriots offense also kept the potent Atlanta and Baltimore offenses off the field, limiting their scoring opportunities.  The Jets game was at least kept pretty close.  You can't say that you left your seat before the end of that game.  The Patriots can be quite a fourth quarter team. As for why they couldn't get the ball in the endzone for 2 games, it may be:  a poorly coordinated running game among strangers like Fred Taylor that had yet to come together (no running game means no punching it in) Brady, Brady, Galloway and receivers not being on the same page (Brady has gotten on the same page with himself since those games) and some random bad luck too.

Sure, there were many factors as to the reason why the red zone offense was not clicking on all cylinders, but the problems almost cost us two games as opposed to one. Yes, it's important to play all 60 minutes - but - for the patriots - I think it's important that they score early and often to take the pressure off the defense - and give them time to gel as the season progresses. The D is starting to gel...so, we'll see what happens going forward.
Patriots defense is:   - 7th best in yards per game allowed - 15th best in yards per play allowed - 10th best at stopping 3rd down conversion attempts - 4th best at creating fumbles - 11th best at rush defense - 15th most sacks - 10th fewest points allowed I guess those "cold, hard football facts" don't mean anything.
    Posted by Ritchie_az
the defense is good, but not great.im watching running backs run at will on our defense.but the pats are more around number 10 in the ranks.the only stat i would like to see get better,is the take aways.

I hear ya.  I always thought that the two most important stats  were the pts. allowed per game and the takeaway/giveaway ratio.
This isn't hogwash, it's based on fact. I'm sure If you reshuffled this just showing the last two weeks you'd see the Pats much higher but you can't do that. They didn't play well the first two games and it is what it is.

Yeah, this is hogwash GARBAGE. The Pats were ranked number 3 in defense after the first two games, and currently they are ranked 7th as a defensive unit. The defensive unit is really good, they just commit to many penalties.
For the poster who said their redzone defense isn't good, must not be watching the games at all! There redzone defense has come up with some big plays when the opponent can actually get into the redzone- usually onthe first drive of the game. Their redzone offense is really terrible right now.

As for the redzone offense being terrible. It's because of two people, Maroney, and Galloway.

Defenses aren't afraid of these two, one has already dropped two in the endzone this year, and the other should become a dancer. This only leaves defenses to guard Moss. Can't go anywhere with that.

No, teams have been able to score TDs in a fairly large percentage of opportunities in the Red Zone. During the last game, it wasn't our D that stopped the Ravens last drive, it was clearly the receiver that dropped the ball on 4th and short. I would agree that the defense has improved somewhat since the first two games.
