Re: Demps Cannot Return - had to be on the 53 man order then ired to return. Crap!

    In response to pezz4pats' comment:

The NFL Players Association has agreed to push the trade deadline back by two weeks until after Week 8 of the regular season, and also OK’d a rule change that will allow one player per team to return from the injured reserve to the active roster and play that season.

Previously, a player designated for the injured reserve list would be automatically ineligible to play for the balance of the season. Under the amended terms, a team can designate one player who has been placed on injured reserved to return later in the season. That player, however, must be on the team's final 53-man roster (finalized on Friday), and also will not be eligible to practice until after the sixth week of the season, and won’t be able to play until after the eighth week of the season.

Because this rule was not agreed upon until Thursday, NFL teams have been granted an exemption for the 2012 season in which they can designate a player that has already been placed on the injured reserve list as a player to return later in this season. This designation must be made by Friday. As an example, the Patriots could designate linebacker Dane Fletcher, who was placed on the injured reserve list earlier this preseason after suffering a major knee injury, as their player to return.

It would appear that this new injured reserve rule could impact the Patriots in one way or another this season. Although we do not know the specifics of injuries to players like Visanthe Shiancoe, Nick McDonald and Tracy White, all three are players who are ineligible to be placed on the PUP list, and could bring value to the team down the road. It would seem plausible for the team to designate one of these three players as their player who would be eligible to return from injured reserve, if in fact their injuries are severe enough that they will not be able to return to the field before the start of the regular season.

does anyone have a publicized 53 man with demps on it (before he's ired?)

so those who think demps is eligble to bring back off ir, do you think this 52 current roster is to keep that viable for demps return this year (and we cut someone else to put waters on)? or just for waters

Wow, talk about nebulous! It would be great if he can come back later in the season. This return from IR thing is a little confusing seeing that they just approved it. IMO he will be able to return later in the season but I could be wrong. Sure hope so,  he would come in at a time to give the offense a boost down the stretch, it would also give him more time to learn the playbook.

So he was IR'd before the 53 cutdown, therefore he fits into the one time 2012 exemption?

Regardless, the Pats will have to designate him as elegible to return or done for season.  Just gonna have to wait and find out....

On a side note, I had posted a discussion a few months back about going to the Pats game in Seattle on October 14th.  Just found out that I will ALSO be going to the Pats vs Jets game on the 21st of October.  Back to back games, cross country.  Go Pats!

Nice,, back to back road games! I'd bet there will be a big difference going to the game in Seattle vs at NY..   Good deal, I've never seen them play on the road before but it would be cool, they are always a tough road team.

The Pats still have to designate him as that player but after looking at the 9 players IR'd (wow 9), he is the logical choice.

    In response to TheSalmon's comment:

I never saw an official "cut" for Demps, so I'm assuming that he made the roster, and then was IR'd. Therefore, the exemption for Tuesday doesn't apply in this case.

The exemption only applies to a player placed on the IR before the 53 man cut deadline. And that player would have to be put back on the roster until Tuesday Sept. 4th, THEN he could be designated with the shortened IR tag.

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000056497/article/nflpa-nfl-agree-to-trade-deadline-extension-ir-exception

I do not believe the team would have used the IR designation on Demps if it meant ending his season. It was fairly evedent that the injury was not that serious. Also being that the NFLPA aproved the rule as late in the preseason as they did there are exemtions that are not as yet clearly defined. Acording to the old IR rules being that he was not a vested veteran he would have had to pass threw waivers if he was to be IRed preseason, and that did not happen. So he must have been placed on the 53 man roster before being placed on IR, even if the documents were signed one after the other. This could possibly have been infered by the fact that the roster now stands at 52. Demps may very well have been the 53, then IRed.

Well Demps can't come back this year. The only thing I can think of why they did this is that the guy just wasn't going to help enough - I think during that Giant's game there were times that showed. These new kickoff rules hurt too - even a guy as fast as Demps could barley make it to the 18 when you're starting half way into the endzone.

The team probably wasn't going to be carrying three third down backs on the roster and I imagine they actually expect Vareen to do something this year...and he better, because Woodhead isn't going to scare anyone. I still wish they kept Demps on the roster because he looked like more than just a track guy to me.

Here is a link to the NFLPA website, where they make an announcement on the new adopted bylaws. As I read it, the 2012 exemption means that any one player IR'ed during traning camp could be activated. BUT, the selection of that player must be made before August 31, 9 pm.

    https://www.nflplayers.com/Articles/Press-Releases/NFL-NFLPA-Agree-to-Adopt-Bylaw-Proposals/

So during today we'll probably know who that player is, if any.

    In response to Paul_K's comment:

Demps has practiced how long with the Patriots?  A week?  He's been lifting weights like a football player for one week?  He's been working out with the jugs machine for a week.  He's been practicing running crisp patterns and picking up Brady's blitzes at the NFL level for an entire week.  He's been learning the NFL's most complex offense for, yeah right.  He's been out of football entirely for seven months straight.  Demps had fumblitis when he did play.  That's not rusty, that's ridiculous.  Demps will be of no use whatsoever to this team for two months, and will only be of marginal use later in this season.  Maybe in a year he'll blossom.  He has more speed and more quickness than anyone else in the NFL.

The best possible thing that could happen for BB and the Patriots was for Demps to fall down and limp off the field, but not be too horribly injured.  Everybody say "Darn!" because that's exactly what happened to the poor rookie.   BB gets to reserve Demps's spot for a 54th player who can play real football against Tennessee nine days from now.  BB still has a four year rookie contract with Demps plus a restricted free agent year in case Demps's boo boo gets all better.
