    Fun with trades & Rodgers-Cromartie

The NFL trading deadline is Thursday, and unlike baseball, there usually isn't much buzz (link here). But that hasn't stopped Chris Sprow of ESPN Insider from putting together a list of 15 trades that could make sense for teams (Insider content).

In the "not that nuts" category of trades, Sprow envisions a scenario in which the Patriots acquire cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie from the Eagles.

"Rodgers-Cromartie will be an unrestricted free agent in 2013, and the emergence of CB Brandon Boykin might mean he'll be elsewhere without a fight," Sprow writes. "The Eagles could add a draft pick, and the Patriots could add a guy who can cover, though that's about all he can do. New England has swung deals in the past, and should at least have its eyes open to secondary help. Put it this way: If the inability to cover ruins another title shot, the Patriots will wonder. DRC could at least help."

Fun stuff. If the Eagles were willing to deal, and take a mid-round pick in return, this would certainly be something worth exploring.

When Rodgers-Cromartie came out of the draft in 2008, I seem to remember the Patriots doing their due diligence on him. I think they liked him. In fact, if they didn't select linebacker Jerod Mayo in the first round, I think Rodgers-Cromartie might have been a serious consideration for them.

It's interesting to think about for sure. DRC has a ton of issues run blocking which is one thing BB looks for in all his CB's but he might be willing to take that hit if it means elimanating 1 WR from the field. It would certainly have an effect on McCourty as well as you can cheat S's overtop towards McCourty and allow McCourty to do what he does best and work underneath

It is interesting to think about but Andy Reid seems to be coaching for his job and trading a starting CB for a draft pick would look like conceding the season which Reid can't do.

Would there be a player or players that Philly would want in exchange?

Seems unlikely to happen but a good cover CB would be nice to see as a mid-season addition.

agreed - how about rights to Waters - hopefully, they can coax him out of his unofficial retirement ?
