Guys the 2012 SB Champion Patriots should NOT go after in FA

    1. Any really big name player as they will want to be overpaid (unless they are willing to play here for less: that MIGHT mean Wes Welker and Talilb, but those are hopeful thoughts, not expectations)

    2. Any player who is not a team player. I do not mean a player who might have had problems with his current team but a player like Santonio Holmes for example who is all  about himself and not team.

    3. No Tebow. No Tebow. There is no place to play him unless BB thinks he can block and catch and so play a running H back (as opposed to a receiving H back like Hernandez)

    4. ANY PLAYER WHO IS A ONE TRICK PONY. I put this in caps because many fans want to see a pass rush specialist here but the problem with someone who cannot stop the run and cannot set the edge but can go after the QB is that they give you nothing else. Too limiting in taking up a roster spot. You want football players. One of BBs great insights as a GM is that depth across the board and breadth of qualities in players allows the Pats to compete for SBs regardless of who is injured (except TB to date) and it allows the team to adjust to any opponent, any weather condition, any game condition, etc. He does this by not over doing the Name recognition thing that almost every fan and almost every owner and GM gets hung up on.

I disagree on the pass rush specialists. In the modern passing NFL these guys are worth more than a run stop specialist like Spikes (who I really hope the Pats keep). The number of guys who are great in everything is pretty limited, we call those guys superstars. The NFL turned into a specialist league years ago and I suspect Belichek was in the forefront of it since he is known for his schemes that attack teams strengths (i.e. remove a key opponent from the equation as much as possible).

Guys they should overpay for are:

    1. Either one of the elite safeties Goldson and Byrd

    2. An OT (if they let Vollmer go) like Clady, Andre Smith or Long.

Guys they shouldn't overpay for are ones on the D-line, as we've had good success drafting there, have some good talent there now, and the players we bring in to play are very hit and miss as far getting to know the Pats system.

I'd love a young rush DE like Michael Bennett or Cliff Avril... but at like 4-5 years 25-30 million... not 6-7 years 50-70 million. Such a move would bring the same type of excitement Rosie Colvin did back in '03... but his deal wasn't 50+ million.

I'd like too see another playmaker or two on the defense. A guy who can get after the QB and a true safety to go along with McCourty back there. If they can't sign Talib then they need a very good corner to add.  The D is young and has some talented players but adding a couple of the right guys back there would make it one of the best. A great d can win any game.
