    how much better will this defense be with mayo?

    Much Better, and no. The Defense right now is averaging 16.5 points without him. When Mayo comes back he will be a dominating force down the middle and Guyton will move back to the outside. I'll say Mayo drops the defense's points allowed down by a good FG, so I'll say 13.5. 


    The Jets won sunday's game because of one simple thing, they brought a gameplan to beat Brady and O'brien gave Brady the ball for the majority of the game. O'brien made Brady the New England offense, the Jets shut him down and thus eliminated the Patriots offense.

    there will be some improvement,but as long as the play calling dosent include pass rushing like the jets did this past sunday.it will only be a slight improvement.

    It will be interesting. By the time Mayo comes back he will be behind the "eight ball". As he has missed 6-8 weeks of "gelling" with the defense. I think that the D would be better with him, but the loss to the Jets was complete outcoaching and and bad play-calling.

    It will be better in part because it will revert to a 3-4, which better suits the talents of our defensive linemen. With Mayo in, we are looking at Warren, Wilfork, and Green playing 2-gap defense, with Guyton and Mayo at ILB and Thomas and Woods/Banta-Cain/Burgess at OLB. That's way better than a four-man line with no real pass rusher on it and three LBs.

    The score in the Jets game was low not so much because the Pats defense played well, but because the Jets chose to play a very conservative offense to protect Sanchez. As long as the Pats weren't scoring the Jets were able to stick with the run and short passes.  In the first half the Jets hardly passed at all--playing exceedingly conservatively and holding the game close without revealing much of their passing game to the Pats (probably a strategy to prevent the Pats from being able to analyze the passing game at halftime and make adjustments). In the second half they opened up just a little and were able to dominate time of possession. The Pats defense was hardly impressive in the second half. The Jets didn't score much, but they controlled the clock, which is all they needed to do since the Pats offense was stifled both by its own incompetence and the Jets' defense.

    Mayo is a big strong guy that can get off of blocks and that hurt us when Mayo went down, alot of plays the Jets did could have been stopped if Mayo was on the field. I'm not knocking Guyton but he's not exactly as good as Mayo is...

    -2 passing yards at halftime was an intentional Jets strategy?  When the Pats D needed to get the ball back for the offense, they did twice in the fourth quarter.   The game came down to one thing only..offensive inefficiency.  If we put in two TDs and 1 FG on our first half drives, its a totally different game.  We didn't primarily because of sloppiness, not great Jets D.  Brady had 150 yds passing at halftime so we were hardly being shutdown.  Penalties and drops were the key issue.

    I do not understand this post...

    First the potriats have not run a 3-4 all year and the presence of Mayo does not mean we are able to run a 3-4

    Guyton was not playing OLB he was playing the WILL and MAyo was playing the SAM... Thomas was playing OLB

    In a 4:3 your defense shifts tight right and left Guyton would be controlling the the weak side opposite the tigh end side of the ball spliting the DE/DT gap and the DE has outside contain...

    It is the same position Prescott Burgess will play this week... the reason Prescott was picked up is becasue Nincovich is not a true 4:3 backer he is a 3:4 olb

    if the patriots do play a 3:4 is would expect Thomas and Guyton to be inside with Nincovich and Banta cain at OLB... derek burgess cannot play OLB/DE hybrid he is a situational pass rusher on third and fourth down...

    the patriots are going with a 4:3 that is how they can exploit the best of Mayo talents

    right now we have Meriwheather, bulter and wheatley as questionable so i would expect to see Springs at SS and Snaders or Mcgowan at FS this weak in a 4:3 scheme

    in order to run a spagnola type defense we would need to draft DE like Prior bigger stronger faster DL with weight and speed... right now all we have is wright and warren who fit this mold Green is too small to be a full time 4:3 DE

    I wouldn't be surprised if the patriots traded Wilfork and there 2010 first round pick to the Panther for Peppers

    Peppers is not worth a top 10 pick OR Vince Wilfork.  This trade would be throwing in the towel for the next two years.  Won't happen.

    tagandtrade--trading Wilfork and their first for Peppers would be the dumbest move in the history of trade.  Al Davis would not make that trade and he is...well Al Davis.  Wilfork is younger, will require less cash in a new contract, and will be in high demand due to all the new 3-4 teams.  Just a stupid thought to even consider that.
