If you didn't notice - Wes Welker...

Mr Dependable had another double digit catch day catching 10 of 12 targets including a 25 yard diving catch over the middle and he had a touchdown today.

Lloyd caught 6 passes for 62 yards

Hernandez caught 1 of 5 targets today for 13 yards.

Can the Patriots front office just come out already and say they look forward to showing Welker the money next season!

How much can you afford to pay three receivers (Gronk, Hernandez and Welker) while you have a mediocre at best defense?

Still need more another pass rusher and need to address Talib?

Really not a huge fan of that Mankins contract right now

top end help at o line

    another cb starter

and maybe a dt to help wilfork (and eventually replace him)

thats a lot for one offseason including 3 draft picks before rd 7.

You gotta ask yourself this.... How good would this team be right now without Welker?  Gronk on the bench hurt, Hernandez isn't all that everyone talks him up to be.  Do you really think the Pats make the SB last year without Welker?  What are their chances this year without Welker?

They gotta keep Welker! Move some money around. They can make it work and still add to the D.

yes i have come around to your conclusion this year after seeing what welker meant earlier in year adn all year as others hurt, he stays healthy and still produces. still there is  a limit to what id pay him (or he gets franchised unless we find somene who can do 2/3 of what he can)

Re: If you didn't notice - Wes Welker...

This guy doesn't get it, the Patriots have a cap to work within. This isn't baseball where the Pats can throw money at someone. Signing Welker isn't the problem, the Pats would love for Welker to retire a Patriot. The problem is how much does Welker want.

The Pats offered him a 2 year 16 million, that's more than I would have offered him, and he said no. He wants big boy money (3 year, 45 mill) and the Pats have NEVER spent that kind of money on anyone not named Tom Brady in the Belichick era. Even Randy Moss worked worked in a deal that Welker would turn down (3 year, 30 million) and Moss was supposed to be the selfish one.

You can't keep spending all this money on the offense, you have to fix your weaknesses. The Patriots defense needs help, Talib is the number one priority this offseason. Look how bad our defense looked in the first quarter, looked what happened as soon as Talib stepped in. He stopped the bleeding, the Jaguars stopped moving the ball.

We have Tom Brady, he's the best QB in NFL history! He won SBs with scrubs at WR, he can win it again with two elite TEs, Bradon Lloyd and a workable RB corps.

Sad part is Welker will be gone. Pats will play their lowball game on an offer, hedging bets that nobody else will pay Welker big bucks for a slot reciever. Pats also play the game where you take less money to play for a SB contender...We saw this before with Willie McGinest when he ended his career in Cleveland.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4737083/quick-hit-thoughts-around-nfl-pats-136

According to Reiss, if the Patriots were to franchise Welker at $11.4 million next season and combine that with Brady's $22 million, the cap hit would be about 27 percent of the team's cap space on two players. Ouch!

And, it won't happen. He'll either sign a 2 year deal at 9 per which is the offer on the table (if it stays on the table), or he's gone.

He ain't worth 10+ mil at that age.   NE could go after Hartline for far less and just filter in Hernandez and also Edelman into the slot.

    [/QUOTE]

I agree with you on the number they should offer him...$9m per sounds about right.  While Hartline is a decent player and would be interesting to see in the WR corp (even if we DO resign Welker), Edelman can't stay in there to complete a game, let alone be depended on for a season.  He's too injury prone and can't be depended on to simply be present every Sunday.  I love his fight and his effort...but he's just a little too brittle for my taste.  Danny Amendola who has been rumored to be a target by the Pats this offseason as a Welker replacement, ALSO can't stay healthy.

I think the Pats are going to HAVE to pay Welker...and it might cost them a little more next year than it would have this year had they come to some sort of agreement.  I think Welker is tired of giving the Pats a chance to step up.

You think part of the problem is Welker's agent thinks he can be this good anywhere and if not the Pats, he gets "paid" somewhere else and that is all that is important?  I believe the agent is driving this thing for Welker to get more $$$ which in turn increases his cut.  Is the player's best interest at heart here by the agent?

I say the same thing to folks TFB12, I ask them, how good would the Pats be WITHOUT Welker?  They can't answer the question, or stumble over it....He has been the most dependable WR/SlotWR for the Patriots for consective years.  He has the best QB/WR chemistry in this league.  No other tandems in this league are better.  They are on the same page with each other.
Welker is a special player, he should be on this team next year.
